Discrete changes in the frequency and functions of autobiographical reminiscence in Huntington's disease.

Autobiographical memory is widely posited to serve self, social and directive functions. Recent evidence suggests marked autobiographical memory impairments in Huntington's disease (HD), however, no study to date has determined how the perceived functions of autobiographical reminiscence may be altered in HD. The current study aimed to assess the self-reported frequency and function of autobiographical reminiscence in HD. We assessed autobiographical reminiscence in late premanifest (n = 16) and early stage HD (n = 14), relative to healthy controls (n = 30). Participants completed the Thinking

Memories defining the self in Alzheimer's disease.

There is a debate over the extent to which personal identity or the self is preserved in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Autobiographical memory deficits at early stages of AD could contribute to altering patients' self. However, the nature of the relationship between autobiographical memory deficits and the self in AD has not been much investigated experimentally. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the integrative meaning of self-defining memories (SDMs) in early stages of AD and to analyse its relationship with the self-concept. The results showed that, when compared to th

Linguistic analysis of the autobiographical memories of individuals with major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by biases in memory, attention, and cognition. The present study utilized the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) to examine the content of specific autobiographical memories (AMs) recalled by individuals with MDD during an autobiographical memory task. METHODS: We examined various features of the text (including use of affective, cognitive, and self-referential terms), as well as their associations with clinical and cognitive features of MDD (depression severity, autobiographical memory specificity, amygdala activity), in 45 u

Changes in perceived centrality of anxious events following cognitive behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder and panic disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to explore the association between reductions in symptoms of psychopathology and perceived centrality of negative autobiographical memories in participants with social anxiety disorder (SAD) or panic disorder (PD). METHODS: Thirty-nine individuals with SAD or PD recalled and rated four negative autobiographical memories before and after ten sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) over a three-month period. Twenty-eight healthy controls did the same before and after a three-month period. RESULTS: As hypothesized, results sh

Do Overgeneral Memories Make us feel better? An experimental examination.

A critical assumption of the CaR-FA-X model, that overgeneral memory is partly attributable to the "functional avoidance" of specific details about one's past experiences, has not been experimentally tested. Further, while it is assumed that the reinforcing properties of said avoidance leads to the emergence of an overgeneral recall style over time, this question has not been addressed developmentally. To explore these issues, two studies were conducted. In Study 1, 41 children and adolescents (Mage = 12 years) were randomly assigned to recall overgeneral or specific negative memories on the A

How does testing affect retrieval-related processes? An event-related potential (ERP) study on the short-term effects of repeated retrieval.

The testing effect is conceptualized as the benefit for remembering items that were studied and tested rather than just studied. Thus far, little is known about the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms. In an event-related potential (ERP) study, we investigated the immediate consequences of testing on recollection processes. During an initial study phase, participants encountered object names together with pictures of the denoted objects ("perceived items") or with the instruction to mentally visualize them ("imagined items"). Directly afterward, they had to differentiate between perceived, im

Shifting self, shifting memory: testing the self-memory system model with hypnotic identity delusions.

According to Conway's self-memory system (SMS) model, autobiographical memories may be facilitated, inhibited, or misremembered to be consistent with current self. In 3 experiments, the authors tested this by hypnotically suggesting an identity delusion and indexing whether this shift in self produced a corresponding shift in autobiographical memory. High hypnotizable participants displayed a compelling identity delusion and elicited specific autobiographical events that they could justify when challenged. These memories were reinterpretations of previous experiences that supported the suggest

Patterns of autobiographical memory in adults with autism spectrum disorder.

Two studies are presented that explored the effects of experimental manipulations on the quality and accessibility of autobiographical memories in adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), relative to a typical comparison group matched for age, gender and IQ. Both studies found that the adults with ASD generated fewer specific memories than the comparison group, and took significantly longer to do so. Despite this, experimental manipulations affected two indices of autobiographical memory (specificity and retrieval latency) similarly in both groups. These results suggest that adults with ASD

Regulating Negative Autobiographical Memories: An fMRI Investigation of Reappraisal and Distraction in Middle-aged and Older Adults.

Cognitive reappraisal and attentional distraction constitute two core strategies for regulating emotions. Prior studies have largely focused on young adults regulating simple laboratory stimuli, with few direct comparisons of brain regions that differentiate or mutually implement these strategies. Here, we expanded the typical age range of participants, compared reappraisal and distraction within participants, and used ecologically valid autobiographical memories as regulatory targets. Sixty-two healthy adults aged 35-75 years generated cue words for negative and neutral autobiographical memor

Lost in transmission? Comparing emotional profiles in transmitted vs. remembered family memories.

This research investigated the emotions associated with intergenerational memories within families. Across three studies, we examined the perspectives of transmitters (parents and grandparents) and receivers (children and grandchildren) regarding important family memories. In Studies 1 and 2, transmitters selected memories they had previously shared with a specific family member, whereas receivers independently selected memories told by the same family member. Study 3 combined these datasets to compare emotional patterns across generations. Across studies, transmitters reported higher emotiona

Modulation of midfrontal theta and posterior alpha during the construction and elaboration of autobiographical memories in individuals with highly superior autobiographical memory.

Individuals with highly superior autobiographical memory (HSAM) represent a rare population with the exceptional ability to recall autobiographical information with remarkable precision and detail. While research has begun to explore the neural mechanisms underlying this extraordinary memory performance, the role of brain oscillations has not yet been investigated in HSAM individuals. Here, we studied three individuals with HSAM and compared their results with 16 controls. We asked all participants to retrieve newer and older autobiographical memories (AMs) while their electroencephalogram (EE

Utilization of Heritage Manifestations in a Reminiscence Programme (App) Directed at Older Adults with and Without Neurocognitive Disorder, Employing AI: A Pilot Study in Portugal and Spain.

Cultural and intangible heritage has been part of human daily life since time immemorial, fulfils a function within the community and acts as an element of identity. Its potential as a stimulus in Reminiscence Therapy (RT), however, has been scarcely explored, despite well-documented evidence on the role of music, crafts or sports as facilitators of autobiographical recall. This pilot study had three operational objectives: (i) to design a reproducible protocol for selecting elements of intangible cultural heritage (traditional oral literature and traditional dances) suitable for personalised

Emotional prospective memory in traumatic brain injury: task characteristics matter.

This study investigated the effects of emotional valence on prospective memory (PM) performance in individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) compared to healthy controls. Using an emotional version of the Virtual Week paradigm, we examined how positive, negative, and neutral emotional content influenced both event-based and time-based PM tasks. Thirty-one participants with TBI and 31 matched healthy controls completed the computerised PM measure over three simulated days, and a recognition task to assess the retrospective component of PM. Participants with TBI performed less accurately tha

Early Cortical Microstructural Changes in Aging Are Linked to Vulnerability to Alzheimer's Disease Pathology.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk is critical for improving treatment success. Cortical thickness is a macrostructural measure used to assess neurodegeneration in AD. However, cortical microstructural changes appear to precede macrostructural atrophy and may improve early risk identification. Currently, whether cortical microstructural changes in aging are linked to vulnerability to AD pathophysiology remains unclear in nonclinical populations, who are precisely the target for early risk identification. METHODS: In 194 adults, we calculated magnetic resonance i

Activity-Based Prospective Memory in ADHD during Motor Sleep Inertia.

Prospective memory (PM) is essential in everyday life because it concerns the ability to remember to perform an intended action in the future. Individuals diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often show poor performance in PM. Because age can be confounding, we decided to test PM in ADHD patients (children and adults) and healthy controls (children and adults). We examined 22 children (four females; mean age = 8.77 ± 1.77) and 35 adults (14 females; mean age = 37.29 ± 12.23) with ADHD, in addition to 92 children (57 females; mean age = 10.13 ± 0.42) and 95 adults (57

Differential contribution of anterior and posterior midline regions during mental simulation of counterfactual and perspective shifts in autobiographical memories.

Retrieving autobiographical memories induces a natural tendency to mentally simulate alternate versions of past events, either by reconstructing the perceptual details of the originally experienced perspective or the conceptual information of what actually occurred. Here we examined whether the episodic system recruited during imaginative experiences functionally dissociates depending on the nature of this reconstruction. Using fMRI, we evaluated differential patterns of neural activity and hippocampal connectivity when twenty-nine participants naturally recalled past negative events, shifted

Cognitive function after electroconvulsive therapy for depression: relationship to clinical response.

BACKGROUND: As uncertainty remains about whether clinical response influences cognitive function after electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for depression, we examined the effect of remission status on cognitive function in depressed patients 4 months after a course of ECT. METHOD: A secondary analysis was undertaken on participants completing a randomised controlled trial of ketamine augmentation of ECT for depression who were categorised by remission status (MADRS ⩽10 v. >10) 4 months after ECT. Cognition was assessed with self-rated memory and neuropsychological tests of anterograde verbal and

Effective connectivity of the anterior hippocampus predicts recollection confidence during natural memory retrieval.

Human interactions with the world are influenced by memories of recent events. This effect, often triggered by perceptual cues, occurs naturally and without conscious effort. However, the neuroscience of involuntary memory in a dynamic milieu has received much less attention than the mechanisms of voluntary retrieval with deliberate purpose. Here, we investigate the neural processes driven by naturalistic cues that relate to, and presumably trigger the retrieval of recent experiences. Viewing the continuation of recently viewed clips evokes greater bilateral activation in anterior hippocampus,

Observer memories may not be for everyone.

Six studies explored the preponderance of people who experience third-person perspective observer memories during autobiographical memory retrieval. The concept of first-person field versus observer memories has been extensively used in the areas of cognitive, social, and clinical psychology. An implicit assumption is the idea that most people use both of these perspectives. What varies are the circumstances that bias people to use one perspective over another for a given autobiographical memory. We challenge that assumption across six studies by showing that, while there are some people who r

Not all drugs are created equal: impaired future thinking in opiate, but not alcohol, users.

Episodic future thinking refers to the ability to travel forward in time to pre-experience an event. Although future thinking has been intimately linked with self and identity, to our knowledge, no prior research has compared episodic future thinking in populations with different substance use disorders. This study investigates whether there are differences in episodic future thinking between these alcohol and opiate users. The study recruited participants who were on the opiate substitution program (n = 31) and individuals who had been diagnosed with alcohol dependence (n = 21) from the Royal
