INTRODUCTION: Tumors of the minor salivary glands in the larynx are rare and represent <1%. They usually appear between the 4(th) and 7(th) decades of life. The most common site of occurrence is the supraglottis; however, these neoplasms can appear at any location in the larynx. Pulmonary metastases are the most frequent site for distant disease.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 34-year-old Hispanic male with a history of cigarette smoking. He was admitted to our Institution in 2002 with a 1-year evolution of odynophagia, initially to solids and then to liquids. The patient was ref

Highly virulent strains of Trypanosoma cruzi are frequently used as murine models of Chagas' disease. However, these strains do not fully represent the spectrum of parasites involved in the human infection. In this paper, we analysed parasitaemia, mortality, tissue pathology and parasite-specific IgG serum levels in immune-deficient mice infected with Sylvio X10/4 parasites, a T. cruzi derived from a chagasic patient that yields very low parasitaemias and in C3H/HePAS mice induces a chronic cardiopathy resembling the human disease. IFN-gamma was identified as a crucial element for parasite con

It is well established that painful distension of hollow viscera such as the oesophagus can evoke a reflex tachycardia and pressor response; however, the nature of the oesophageal afferent pathway(s) remains controversial. This study investigated the afferent arc which mediates these reflex cardiovascular changes in the decerebrate rat. In addition, the effect of oesophageal distension on the respiratory activity of the costal diaphragm was studied. Focal distension of the oesophagus (volume of 0.3 ml applied for 10 s) just above the diaphragmatic hiatus evoked a reproducible pressor response

Disturbances of Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase activity in patients with respiratory insufficiency may cause the hypertonia of non-striated muscles, which leads to increased peripheral resistance or bronchoconstriction, and also may inhibit the uptake of catecholamines and therefore may intensify their action on the respiratory and circulatory systems. All this is very harmful in respiratory insufficiency. The aim of the study was the examination if there are any changes in sodium efflux through lymphocytic cell membrane in patients with chronic respiratory insufficiency and if retraction of insufficiency

Since the discovery of melatonin as the principal hormone of the pineal gland in 1963, scientists have come to recognize that melatonin is a "master hormone" involved in the control of circadian rhythms and other biological functions. Although little is known about the influence of the pineal gland on motor control, important clues may be obtained by considering the pattern of melatonin secretion during the sleep cycles and particularly during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep when melatonin plasma levels are at their lowest. Since REM sleep is characterized by the occurrence of profound atonia w

BACKGROUND: Hair bulge progenitor cells (HBPCs) are multipotent stem cells derived from the bulge region of mice vibrissal hairs. The purified HBPCs express CD34, K15 and K14 surface markers. It has been reported that HBPCs could be readily induced to transdifferentiate into adipocytes and osteocytes. However, the ability of HBPCs to transdifferentiate into cardiomyocytes has not yet been investigated.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The cardiomyogenic potential of HBPCs was investigated using a small cell-permeable molecule called Cardiogenol C. We established that Cardiogenol C could induce

Understanding how feeding strategies influence oral morphology is fundamental to fish functional anatomy and trophic ecology. However, comparative data on tongue structure across dietary groups remain scarce in teleosts. This study examined tongue morphology in Boops boops (bogue), an omnivorous teleost with opportunistic feeding habits, and Pagrus pagrus (red porgy), a carnivorous benthic feeder with specialized prey preferences. By selecting species with distinct trophic niches, we aimed to elucidate how tongue architecture reflects dietary adaptations within teleosts. Morphometric analysis

Farber disease (FD) is an ultrarare, autosomal-recessive, lysosomal storage disorder attributed to ASAH1 gene mutations. FD is characterized by acid ceramidase (ACDase) deficiency and the accumulation of ceramide in various tissues. Classical FD patients typically manifest symptoms including lipogranulomatosis, respiratory complications, and neurological deficits, often leading to mortality during infancy. Cardiac abnormalities in several FD patients have been described; however, a detailed examination of cardiac pathology in FD has not been conducted. Here we report pronounced cardiac pathoph

Background: Idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus (ICTEV) is one of the most common congenital deformities of children, and dysplasia of the striated muscle may be one of the causes of ICTEV. Previous studies have shown that polymorphisms of the rs4075583 SNP in the tropomyosin gene 1 (TPM1) were associated with ICTEV in Caucasian children. However, there are no studies investigating the correlations of TPM gene polymorphisms with the risk of ICTEV in Chinese children. Methods: We conducted a case-control study, including 430 children with ICTEV and 891 ICTEV-free children. We explored the

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), a malignant tumor derived from the neoplastic proliferation of striated skeletal muscle cells, is the most common pediatric soft tissue sarcoma. Its treatment is mainly based on neoadjuvant chemotherapy (QT+), surgical resection, and adjuvant radiotherapy (RT+). RT+ has shown satisfactory results for locoregional control of the disease, in spite of promoting local side effects. The present case report was aimed at describing the clinical and therapeutic characteristics and the management of complications resulting from multimodal therapy in a patient with an atypical pr

INTRODUCTION: Rhabdomyolysis (RM) is a condition where there is injury to striated muscle fibers causing release of myoglobin, creatine phosphokinase (CPK), and other intracellular contents into the circulation. High myoglobin levels cause acute kidney injury (AKI). Trauma is the most common cause of RM and development of complications related to the degree of myoglobin released. Currently, the degree of RM is assessed and treatment is instituted based on serum CPK. As myoglobin is the direct cause of AKI, we set out to determine if serum myoglobin is a more reliable predictor than CPK for the

AIMS: Vaginal distension (VD) in outbred rats has been shown to decrease urethral resistance, as well as increase the expression of the stem cell-homing chemokine, monocyte chemotactic factor 3 (MCP-3), but not stromal derived factor 1 (SDF-1). The aim of this study was to determine if similar responses are induced by VD in an inbred rat strain.
METHODS: Forty female Lewis rats underwent VD or sham VD followed by leak point pressure (LPP) testing 4 or 10 days later. Ten additional rats served as controls. The urethra and vagina were then dissected for histology. To examine chemokine expressio

BACKGROUND: Tropomyosin is a prototypical coiled coil along its length with subtle variations in structure that allow interactions with actin and other proteins. Actin binding globally stabilizes tropomyosin. Tropomyosin-actin interaction occurs periodically along the length of tropomyosin. However, it is not well understood how tropomyosin binds actin.
PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Tropomyosin's periodic binding sites make differential contributions to two components of actin binding, cooperativity and affinity, and can be classified as primary or secondary sites. We show through mutagenesis and analy

Pompe disease, which results from mutations in the gene encoding the glycogen-degrading lysosomal enzyme acid alpha -glucosidase (GAA) (also called "acid maltase"), causes death in early childhood related to glycogen accumulation in striated muscle and an accompanying infantile-onset cardiomyopathy. The efficacy of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with recombinant human GAA was demonstrated during clinical trials that prolonged subjects' overall survival, prolonged ventilator-free survival, and also improved cardiomyopathy, which led to broad-label approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administra

Spinal transplantation of adrenal medullary chromaffin cells has been shown to decrease pain responses in several animal models. Improved potency may be possible by engineering cells to produce greater levels of naturally derived analgesics. As an initial screen for potential candidates, adrenal medullary transplants were evaluated in combination with exogenously administered neuropeptides in rodent pain models. Histogranin is a 15-amino acid peptide that exhibits NMDA receptor antagonist activity. The stable derivative [Ser1]histogranin (SHG) can attenuate pain symptoms in some animal models.

Regardless of their specific physico-chemical properties and chemical structures, all local anaesthetic agents block neuronal voltage-gated sodium channels, and thus suppress conduction in peripheral nerves. Since these ion channels ubiquitously appear in excitable membranes, systemic accumulation of local anaesthetic agents may affect the functional integrity of these structures. Clinically, local anaesthetic-induced systemic toxicity results in central nervous and cardiovascular malfunction. With regard to CNS toxicity, symptoms which are largely drug-independent appear in a characteristic b

BACKGROUND: Increased leukocyte-endothelial cell interaction (LE) and deterioration of capillary perfusion represent key mechanisms of septic organ dysfunction. The type of volume support, however, which may be used during septic disorders, remains controversial. Using intravital microscopy, the authors studied the effect of different regimens of clinically relevant volume support on endotoxin-induced microcirculatory disorders, including the synthetic colloid hydroxyethyl starch (HES, 130 kD) and a crystalloid regimen with isotonic saline solution (NaCl).

Increased numbers of mast cells are noted at sites of wound healing and inflammation. These mast cells are either recruited from the bone marrow or proliferate locally under cytokine stimulation. However, the molecular mechanisms mediating initial adhesive interactions between mast cell precursors and vascular endothelial cells are not well understood. We have used a syngeneic dorsal skinfold chamber model of microcirculation to study early events of mast cell-endothelial cell interactions by intravital fluorescence microscopy. Because "rolling" represents the earliest step of granulocyte adhe

We studied the appearance and distribution of histamine (HA) during mouse embryogenesis, neonatal period, and adulthood using a specific rabbit HA antiserum and indirect immunofluorescence. HA first appeared on the Embryonic Day 13 (E13) in scattered mast cells in the gastrointestinal (GI) muscularis externa and liver. The splenic primordium contained a dense population of intensely HA-immunoreactive (HA-ir) cells from E13 on. From E15 to the birth, HA was detected in many embryonic cell types. On E15, the first HA-ir epithelial endocrine cells appeared in the oxyntic mucosa. In addition to th
