Myxoma is a slow growing, benign neoplasm, which pathogenesis still remains disputed. The lesion has well-defined borders but a true capsule is absent. Because of that myxoma can be locally invasive causing bone destruction. A change is mainly observed among persons between 20-30 years of age and is very uncommon in the pediatric population. Most myxomas are observed in myocardium, but rarely may also manifest in the head and neck region. In the paper we describe an unusual case of myxoma of maxillary sinus in a female infant. Diagnostic challenges, treatment, outcome, post-operative follow-up

Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is an uncommon malignancy. It manifests either in the primary form in the skin as an intraepithelial neoplasm, or in secondary form as pagetoid (intraepithelial) spread of an underlying internal carcinoma to the skin. Although local invasion and recurrence of primary extramammary Paget disease are relatively frequent, widespread metastases are rare. As such, there are very few reports and little characterization of the radiologic features of widespread spinal metastases. To our knowledge, there are no prior reports of a metastatic extramammary Paget disease pr

Pulmonary infections can mimic a pulmonary neoplasm. Multiple organisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, can present with similar clinical, radiographic, and surgical findings as neoplastic processes. Because treatment and the prognosis are completely different, an accurate diagnosis is crucial, and lung biopsy is usually required. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is part of the normal oral flora and is a rare cause of invasive infection due to hematogenous dissemination or aspiration, particularly infective endocarditis. We present a case of A. actinomycetemcomitans and Actinomyc

Ectopic hamartomatous thymoma (EHT) is an extremely rare benign neoplasm. It is usually found at the root of the neck (frequently on the left) and does not usually impact adjacent tissues in clinically significant ways. While EHT manifests distinct pathological features, the lesion is either asymptomatic or may show nonspecific clinical features. We report one case of EHT which was assumed to be of low malignant potential since it severely compressed the inlet of left internal jugular vein as seen by computed tomography scan. To the best of our knowledge, this clinical finding of EHT is very r

Choriocarcinoma is a highly invasive and metastatic neoplasm which arises in women of reproductive age. It can be either gestational or nongestational in origin, but the latter form is very rare. Choriocarcinoma is characterized by the production of human chorionic gonadotropin. It can metastasize to distant organs such as lung, brain, liver, kidney, and vagina in the early stages of disease, but retroperitoneal metastasis is extremely rare. Treatment options include surgical intervention and chemotherapy. We present the case of a 25-year-old nulliparous woman who presented to our department w

The diseases affecting the trachea and main bronchi can be categorized into congenital or acquired abnormalities and also into focal or diffuse diseases. Major congenital bronchial abnormalities cover accessory cardiac bronchus and tracheal bronchus. Tracheobronchial strictures, such as post-intubation and post-infectious stenosis and tracheobronchial neoplasms are regarded as focal diseases, whereas tracheobronchomegaly, relapsing polychondritis, tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica, amyloidosis, granulomatosis with polyangiitis, tracheobronchomalacia, saber-sheath trachea and tracheobro

Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) represent 1% of primary gastrointestinal cancers. These neoplasms most frequently metastasise to the liver and peritoneum and rarely to the lungs and bones. Treatment of unresectable GISTs involves systemic chemotherapy with tyrosine kinase inhibitors, imatinib and sunitinib being first-line and second-line drugs. We report the case of a 52-year-old man with GIST who developed a right-sided subareolar breast swelling and subsequently discovered to be an invasive metastatic pulmonary GIST. Given that gynaecomastia is a known adverse effect of imatinib an

Primary small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the paranasal sinuses is an extremely rare and distinctive tumor with aggressive clinical behavior. We report on a patient who had a small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the ethmoid sinus with invasion of the upper aspect of the right maxillary sinus and medial aspect of the right orbit. After 2 cycles of chemotherapy that were unsuccessful, he underwent radiotherapy with complete tumor remission. Local recurrence was not identified after 11 months of follow-up; however, distant metastasis developed 2 months after radiotherapy. The natural histo

Actinomycosis is a rare anaerobic bacterial infection typically caused by Actinomyces israelii. Although part of normal flora in the oral cavity, and respiratory and digestive tracts, A israelii can give rise to pathologic infections most commonly reported in the oral cavity from odontogenic causes. We present a rare case of invasive actinomycosis presenting with extensive midface destruction involving the maxilla and paranasal sinuses, with mucosal necrosis mimicking an aggressive neoplasm. The diagnosis is usually reached only after histopathologic analysis showing characteristic sulfur gran

We report a case of the "reversed halo sign" 6 weeks after radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of a lung neoplasm in an 80-year-old man. The "reversed halo sign," first described on computed tomography in cryptogenic organizing pneumonia, has later been described as being associated with a wide range of pulmonary pathologies, including paracoccidiodomycosis, tuberculosis, lymphomatoid granulomatosis, Wegener granulomatosis, invasive pulmonary fungal infections, and sarcoidosis. Although a number of computed tomography findings have been reported after RFA of both primary lung tumors and pulmonary me

Giant fibrovascular polyps (FVP) are relatively rare benign neoplasms of the upper part of the esophagus. Without a previous history, their diagnosis might be difficult because the endoscopic findings are sometimes misinterpreted. The present report describes a case in which the patient regurgitated a giant polypoid mass into his mouth and captured it between his teeth and buccal surface until emergency endoscopic removal. Although the adequate therapy for these lesions is open surgical resection, most often via cervical esophagotomy, in our case the polyp was removed successfully by peroral e

Skin involvement is a late complication that rarely occurs in ovarian cancer patients. This event invariably carries a bad prognosis in the course of an advanced stage ovarian carcinoma which is usually of the conventional serous type. Micropapillary serous carcinoma (MPSC) was recently recognized as a distinct neoplasm that seems to be less aggressive than conventional serous ovarian carcinoma. Indeed, a few cases of stage IV MPSC have been reported. Herein, we describe an unusual case of ovarian invasive MPSC occurring in a young woman, particularly by its mode of presentation as multiple su

Choriocarcinoma is an aggressive neoplasm arising in the body of the uterus. Rapid growth and myometrial invasion may be followed by uterine perforation. In this study, we present the cases of two young patients (18 and 19 years of age) with acute abdominal pain and shock, while they were under chemotherapy due to persistent trophoblastic disease. During emergent exploratory laparotomy, localized resection of uterus was performed. They had their first successful term pregnancy 5 and 4 years after surgery, respectively. Uterine perforation following choriocarcinoma is a rare event. Hysterectomy

The emergence of a secondary pulmonary neoplasm at some time after the primary one raises diagnostic and therapeutic issues especially in patients with functional respiratory capacities at the limits of resectability. We present the case of a 53 years old patient which suffered a right upper lobectomy three years before for a moderately differentiated squamous carcinoma and in which a second cancer was discovered in the right main bronchus. Para-clinic explorations demonstrated the lack of local and systemic invasion of the second cancer. The optimal therapeutic way is presented and its result

Between 1986-1995 we operated 337 patients with ductal adenocarcinoma of the pancreas, 45 cases of carcinoma of the papilla of Vater and 11 patients with cystadenocarcinoma of the pancreas. The evaluation of prognostic factors showed the influence of lymph node invasion. Furthermore we saw a significant influence of lymph- and haemangiosis carcinomatosa, of tumor-grading and tumor-size. The carcinoma of the papilla showed a better 5-year survival even in nodal-positive patients--this as a result of a different biological behaviour. We think that--instead of missing improvement of cure in ducta

Duodenal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma is a rare neoplasm. We report a case of a 70-year-old man with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma located in the descending duodenum that was not associated with Helicobacter pylori infection of the stomach. A surgical resection due to obstruction of the bowel lumen above the ligament of Treitz was performed. No invasion into the adjacent structure was confirmed at surgery. The pathological examination showed an infiltration of the duodenal mucosa and submucosa with B lymphocytes. Monoclonal proliferation of the lymphoid tissue was demonstrated by polyme

Current concepts of endoscopic management of supraglottic cancer are an extension of precepts fostered by Jackson. The current approach has been facilitated by a half century of technological developments: the surgical microscope, the CO2 laser, improved laryngoscopes, and general endotracheal anesthesia. Selected small-volume cancers can be curatively resected, whereas excisional biopsy can be performed on larger neoplasms. With this cost effective minimally-invasive surgical approach, there is less disturbance of normal tissue, thereby minimizing morbidity rate and hospitalization. If the tr

Malignant mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis is exceedingly rare. A new case mimicking hydrocele in a 47-year-old man is here reported. Clinical staging revealed scrotal cutaneous and funicular tumor invasion together with retroperitoneal adenopathies. Once visceral dissemination was ruled out, radical orchiectomy, left hemiscrotectomy and modified retroperitoneal lymph node dissection were performed. Adjuvant systemic chemotherapy and radiation were also administered. Histologically, an epithelial neoplasm with papillary pattern was evidenced. CAM 5.2 cytokeratin was positive in prol

A 56-year-old woman had a large multicystic ovarian tumour 4 years after undergoing partial cystectomy for a deeply invasive urachal adenocarcinoma. On microscopic examination the ovarian tumour was a moderately differentiated mucinous cystadenocarcinoma similar to the urachal tumour. Several peritoneal biopsies and the omentum were positive for metastatic adenocarcinoma. Although initially interpreted as representing primary mucinous adenocarcinoma of the ovary with peritoneal spread, subsequent comparison with the previous urachal adenocarcinoma led to re-interpretation of the ovarian tumour

A 37-year old man with a five-year history of nephrolithiasis was catheterized with a double-J ureteral stent (Angiomed) in the left ureter before extra corporeal shock wave lithotripsy. After eight lithotripsy treatments over the course of one year, the double-J stent was removed. Papillary tumor was discovered around the left ureter ostium. Histology showed papillary transitional cell carcinoma grade 2 without invasive growth. No neoplasm has previously been observed after using double pigtail stents for longtime-stenting. One should keep this case in mind, when controlling ureteral stents t
