Deep Learning-Assisted Accuracy Improvement in Bladder Cancer Staging of Spectrum-Aided Visual Enhanced Cystoscopy Images.

Recent statistics reported by the World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer indicate that the global incidence of bladder cancer has continued to increase in recent years, particularly in industrialized countries. Therefore, the timely diagnosis of early-stage bladder cancer is of great clinical importance for improving patient prognosis and treatment outcomes. In this context, computational optical sensing frameworks that integrate Spectrum-Aided Visual Enhancer (SAVE) technology with cystoscopy have attracted significant attention to overcome the limitatio

[Imaging diagnostics of kidney tumors : Scores and classification systems].

Renal cell carcinoma is one of the most common cancers and its mortality rate is falling due to continuous advances in diagnostics and treatment. Early detection using imaging techniques enables treatment with curative intent, resulting in a correspondingly favorable prognosis. Classification systems such as the TNM and Bosniak classifications as well as nephrometric scores, particularly the R.E.N.A.L. score, assist in prognosis assessment and support individualized treatment planning. They help to assess tumor complexity and the subsequent risk of postoperative or postinterventional complicat

Tumor Deposits in Colorectal Cancer: Definitions for Ninth Edition of the Tumor Node Metastasis Staging System.

Tumor deposits (TDs) have been a contentious element of the tumor node metastasis staging system for colorectal cancer since their introduction in 1997. Classified within the nodal category, their definition has changed repeatedly due to unclear distinctions from lymph node metastases, extramural vascular invasion, and perineural invasion. Despite updates in the tumor node metastasis system eight edition, ambiguity remains, with current criteria relying heavily on pathologist discretion. The fact that TDs are among the most powerful prognostic indicators warrants standardization, based on scie

Pancreatoduodenectomy with vascular reconstruction versus chemotherapy alone in patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer is still a terrifying condition that has a high mortality rate due to its rapid progression and treatment complexity. However, there is still no consensus on what the gold standard of treatment for locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC) is. AIMS: The aim of this study was to review the current evidence-based data on treatment strategies for LAPC, comparing pancreatoduodenectomy with vascular reconstruction (PDVR) and chemotherapy alone (CA). METHODS: This systematic review was performed according to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Overall survival (OS) was the pr

Advances in radiation therapy for HCC: Integration with liver-directed treatments.

HCC is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related mortality with increasing incidence worldwide. Historically, treatment for early disease includes liver transplantation, surgical resection, and/or other local therapies, such as thermal ablation. As a result of technical advances and high-quality prospective data, the use of definitive external beam radiotherapy with ablative doses has emerged. Intermediate-stage disease has been generally addressed with arterially directed therapies (eg, chemoembolization or radioembolization) and external beam radiotherapy, while advanced stages have been ad

Systematic critical appraisal of GRADE recommendations for prostate cancer staging.

INTRODUCTION: Prostate cancer staging is necessary to determine tumor extent. In recent years, new and more accurate imaging modalities that could provide a better framework for patient management have emerged. They are currently incorporated into the prostate cancer guideline recommendations. Clinical practice guidelines are important for implementing clinical research findings and high-quality evidence-based recommendations. OBJECTIVE: To review and evaluate the quality of evidence underpinning the categorization of prostate cancer staging guidelines using the AGREE II tool. MATERIAL AND M

The 9th Version of the AJCC Staging System for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma: A Guide for Radiologists.

Version 9 of the AJCC staging system for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) introduces important refinements, emphasizing improved prognostic accuracy, clarity, and clinical relevance. Building on the 8th edition, it refines TNM classifications to address limitations in survival outcome stratification and incorporates new criteria. Specifically, version 9 clarifies the criteria for T3 disease by requiring unequivocal evidence of bone involvement-namely, involvement of the skull base (including the pterygoid plates), cervical vertebrae, or paranasal sinuses. It additionally introduces advanced radi

Cancer of the vulva: 2025 update: FIGO Cancer Report 2025.

Vulvar cancer is an uncommon gynecological malignancy primarily affecting postmenopausal women. No specific screening exists and the most effective strategy to reduce the incidence of vulvar cancer is the opportune treatment of predisposing and preneoplastic lesions associated with its development. Although vulvar cancer may be asymptomatic, most women present with vulvar pruritus or pain or have noticed a lump or ulcer. Therefore, any suspicious vulvar lesion should be biopsied to exclude invasion. Once established, the most common subtype is squamous cell carcinoma. The treatment of vulvar c

Current surgical management of malignant parotid tumors.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Surgical treatment of parotid cancer presents challenges due to the rarity of the disease, the histologic heterogeneity, and the complex regional anatomy. Recently published international guidelines contain recommendations for surgical management of the primary tumor and the neck lymph nodes, but still allow both T and N to be managed in different ways. This review summarizes the remaining areas of discussion. RECENT FINDINGS: The reference treatment for parotid cancer is total parotidectomy; however, for low-grade, low-stage tumors a superficial parotidectomy may be suffic

Superficial Primary Malignant Melanoma of the Esophagus Detected and Treated at Stage 0.

The patient was a 79-year-old male. At three years and eight months after his initial presentation, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a black-flattened elevated lesion in the middle third of the esophagus, which was diagnosed as malignant melanoma on biopsy. No lymph node or distant metastasis was found. A diagnosis of cT1bN0M0 Stage I was thus made. We performed a robot-assisted, minimally invasive esophagectomy and D2 dissection. The postoperative diagnosis was pT1a-MM, N0, M0, vascular invasion+, stage 0. The patient was recurrence-free for 14 months after surgery. We presume that a

Primary dermal melanoma.

Primary dermal melanoma (PDM) is a rare subtype of melanoma with an estimated incidence of <1%. PDM manifests entirely in the dermis or subcutis and histopathologically mimics cutaneous melanoma metastasis due to its lack of connection to the overlying epidermis. A thorough history and examination, including imaging evaluation for metastatic disease, reveals no prior history or concurrent primary cutaneous or metastatic melanoma lesion. Despite its histopathologic similarities to melanoma metastasis, PDM is associated with an unexpectedly favorable prognosis. This review discusses the clinical

New diagnostic and nonsurgical local treatment modalities for early stage lung cancer.

This paper highlights developments in diagnostic and nonsurgical local treatment modalities that have changed the management of early-stage lung cancer. These innovations aim to enhance diagnostic accuracy, minimize invasiveness, and improve patient outcomes. Liquid biopsies are emerging as promising tools for non-invasive diagnosis and monitoring, enabling earlier intervention without being standardized yet as well as not yet anchored in the guidelines. Endobronchial navigation has emerged as an innovative tool. By combining electromagnetic or GPS-like technology with 3D imaging and a steerab

NCCN Guidelines® Insights: Bladder Cancer, Version 3.2024.

Bladder cancer, the sixth most common cancer in the United States, is most commonly of the urothelial carcinoma histologic subtype. The clinical spectrum of bladder cancer is divided into 3 categories that differ in prognosis, management, and therapeutic aims: (1) non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC); (2) muscle invasive, nonmetastatic disease; and (3) metastatic bladder cancer. These NCCN Guidelines Insights detail recent updates to the NCCN Guidelines for Bladder Cancer, including changes in the fifth edition of the WHO Classification of Tumours: Urinary and Male Genital Tumours and ho

Role of exhaled hydrogen sulfide in the diagnosis of colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is often accompanied by increased excretion of hydrogen sulfide (H2S). This study aimed to explore the value of exhaled H2S in the diagnosis of CRC. METHODS: A total of 80 people with normal colonoscopy results and 57 patients with CRC were enrolled into the present observational cohort study. Exhaled oral and nasal H2S were detected by Nanocoulomb breath analyser. Results were compared between the two groups. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were analysed and area under the curves (AUCs) were calculated to assess the diagnostic value of exhal

The prognostic ability of radiotherapy of different colorectal cancer histological subtypes and tumor sites.

The prognostic significance of radiotherapy (RT) for colorectal cancer (CRC) has shown conflicting results, particularly among different pathological subtypes, including adenocarcinoma (AC), mucinous adenocarcinoma (MC), and signet-ring cell carcinoma (SR). This study analyzed the prognosis of three pathological CRC types and focused on the prognostic significance of RT on three CRC histological subtypes. Patients diagnosed with AC (n = 54,174), MC (n = 3813), and SR (n = 664) in the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database (2010-2017) were evalua
