An autopsy case of hereditary peroneal muscular atrophy (PMA) with rigidity and static tremor is presented. The patient developed slowly progressive distal muscular atrophy of the legs at the age of 15 years. By the age of 52 years, PMA became marked associated with pes cavus, and tremor and rigidity of the extremities were noted. Motor and sensory conduction velocities gradually depressed and lost near the end of his life. Motor nerve conduction velocity (MCV) of the facial nerve was measured by electrical stimulation of the marginal mandibular branch and by evoked electromyography of the mentalis muscle. Normal MCV was 48.8 +/- 3.68 (mean +/- SD) m/s. In 132 patients with Bell's palsy, the minimum MCV was investigated within 2 weeks after onset. Sixty patients with normal MCV completely recovered in 1 month, but in the other patients with lower MCV, recovery was delayed. Electrophysiological experiments have been carried out to see if the proportions of sympathetic postganglionic and unmyelinated afferent axons in a cutaneous nerve were changed after injury and regeneration. It seemed possible that an alteration in the relative numbers of the two groups of axons could contribute to the aetiology of reflex sympathetic dystrophy, but the experiments provided no evidence for such a change. There were, however, signs of a decrease in axon numbers in the regenerated nerves.

We recorded brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) in two patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). One patient was acutely deaf with total absence of BAEP waveforms indicative of acoustic nerve conduction block. Hearing improved during early convalescence, and there were prolonged wave I latencies. Normal BAEPs were recorded on recovery. A second patient had bilaterally prolonged wave I latencies. These BAEP findings suggest that acoustic nerve conduction abnormalities from demyelination may occur in GBS.

Pattern-reversal visual evoked cortical potentials (VECP) taken from 25 healthy volunteers before, during and after short-lasting elevation of intraocular pressure proved to be dependent on ciliary perfusion pressure (pp cil) in a characteristic way.
