PM2.5 Exposure Lowers Mitochondrial Endurance During Cardiac Recovery in a Rat Model of Myocardial Infarction.

Many studies have reported the negative effect of PM2.5 exposure on heart function which is likely to impair postcardiac surgery rehabilitation that is involved in recovery and wound healing, yet the direct effects of PM2.5 from diesel exhaust (DPM) on cardiac recovery is unknown. To study the impact of DPM on cardiac recovery and repair, we utilized isoproterenol induced myocardial infarction (MI) model where female rats were exposed to DPM prior and after MI induction. The experimental groups comprise of normal, ISO control, DPM control (42 days of exposure), DPM exposed prior (21 days) and

Epithelial morphometric alterations and mucosecretory responses in the nasal cavity of mice chronically exposed to hydrothermal emissions.

Air pollutants (either of natural or anthropogenic origin) represent a considerable environmental risk to human health by affecting the resp … e continuous release of several gases (CO2, H2S, 222Rn) along with metals (e.g. Hg, Cd, Zn, Al) and particulate matter into the environment. We test the hypothesis whether chronic exposure to this specific type of pollution causes epithelial morphometric, mucosecretory and neuronal alterations on the nasal cavity. Thickness measurements were taken in the squamous, r …

Bronchial Variation: Anatomical Abnormality May Predispose Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Noxious particulate matter in the air is a primary cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The bronchial tree acts to filter these materials in the air and preserve the integrity of the bronchi. Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that smoking and air pollutants are the most prominent risk factors of COPD. Bifurcations in the airway may act as deposition sites for the retention of inhaled particles, however, little is known concerning the impacts of abnormalities of the bronchial anatomy in the pathogenesis of COPD. Studies have reported significant associations between bronc…

Association between outdoor particulate air pollution and the risk of osteoporosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Air pollution is a major threat to global health, which is associated with several adverse health outcomes and increased mortality. Few studies have investigated the association between air pollution and osteoporosis, and their findings were inconclusive. Our objective is to determine whether exposure to outdoor air pollution is causally associated with risk of osteoporosis. A systematic literature search of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library for publications up to December 2020 was conducted for studies reporting the association between air pollution and osteoporosis. Meta-a

Cooking activities in a domestic kitchen: Chemical and toxicological profiling of emissions.

To obtain emission factors and cooking-related chemical signatures, a monitoring campaign was carried out in a modern kitchen where different dishes of the Latin cuisine were prepared. Particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5 and PM1) and total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) were continuously measured. Passive tubes for carbonyls and a high volume PM10 sampler were simultaneously used. PM10 filters were analysed for organic and elemental carbon and for multiple organic compounds, including polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The toxic potential of PM10 was evaluated using a bioluminescence inhibition…

Probabilistic total PM2.5 emissions from vehicular sources in Australian perspective.

Motor vehicles operating on the road are a significant source of Particulate Matter (PM) emissions depending on the fuels used in the vehicles. Gasoline and Diesel vehicles are directly responsible for the tailpipe PM emissions (specifically PM2.5: particles ≤ 2.5 µm), known as primary PM2.5 emissions. The other major direct emissions from the vehicles, which include volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) contribute to the formation of secondary organic PM, also known as secondary organic aerosols (SOA), through some inter-related chemical reactions. The SOAs are highly t…

PM2.5 constituents and mortality from a spectrum of causes in Guangzhou, China.

As the major constituents of PM2.5, carbonaceous constituents and inorganic ions have attracted emerging attentions on their health risks, particularly on cardiorespiratory diseases. However, evidences on the risks of PM2.5 constituents on other diseases (eg. nervous disease, genitourinary disease, neoplasms and endocrine disease) remain scarce. In our study, we firstly calculated residuals of PM2.5 constituents regressed on PM2.5 to remove the confounding effect of PM2.5. Then, generalized additive model (GAM) was used to assess impacts of residuals of PM2.5 constituents on mortality from 36

Air pollutants disrupt iron homeostasis to impact oxidant generation, biological effects, and tissue injury.

Air pollutants cause changes in iron homeostasis through: 1) a capacity of the pollutant, or a metabolite(s), to complex/chelate iron from pivotal sites in the cell or 2) an ability of the pollutant to displace iron from pivotal sites in the cell. Through either pathway of disruption in iron homeostasis, metal previously employed in essential cell processes is sequestered after air pollutant exposure. An absolute or functional cell iron deficiency results. If enough iron is lost or is otherwise not available within the cell, cell death ensues. However, prior to death, exposed cells will attemp

Establishment of Regional Concentration-Duration-Frequency Relationships of Air Pollution: A Case Study for PM2.5.

Poor air quality usually leads to PM2.5 warnings and affects human health. The impact of frequency and duration of extreme air quality has received considerable attention. The extreme concentration of air pollution is related to its duration and annual frequency of occurrence known as concentration-duration-frequency (CDF) relationships. However, the CDF formulas are empirical equations representing the relationship between the maximum concentration as a dependent variable and other parameters of interest, i.e., duration and annual frequency of occurrence. As a basis for deducing the extreme C

Should I stay or should I go: Can air pollution reduce the health benefits of physical exercise?

The urbanization process resulted in incredible achievements for society, unfortunately together with economic, social, and technological development it deteriorates air quality and encourages sedentary behavior. Air pollution inhalation is responsible for a massive negative health effect. The practice of regular physical exercise is strongly encouraged to achieve a healthy lifestyle. However, particularly during a physical exercise session, the respiratory system undergoes some physiological adaptations that lead to an increase in the volume of inhaled air, so exercising in a polluted environ

The effect of air pollution on drivers' safety performance.

Numerous studies have determined the adverse effects of air pollution on the health, welfare, and comfort of humans. More recently, the effects of air pollution on cognitive performance of humans are also focused. However, as a group in direct exposure to air pollution, drivers are rarely studied. The present study aims to evaluate the effect of air pollution on the performance of drivers. Their performance is evaluated by observing the number of recorded accidents. The effect of pollutant concentration (primarily PM2.5) on the number of accidents is investigated in a case study in Tehran. The

The Effects of Fireworks Discharge on Atmospheric PM2.5 Concentration in the Chinese Lunar New Year.

Discharging fireworks during the Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations is a deep-rooted custom in China. In this paper, we analyze the effect of this cultural activity on PM2.5 concentration using both ground observations and satellite data. By combining remote sensing data, the problem of uneven spatial distribution of ground monitoring has been compensated, and the research time span has been expanded. The results show that the extensive firework displays on New Year's Eve lead to a remarkable increase in nationwide PM2.5 concentration, which were 159~223% of the average level, indicating the

Integrating Air Quality and Public Health Benefits in U.S. Decarbonization Strategies.

Research on air quality and human health "co-benefits" from climate mitigation strategies represents a growing area of policy-relevant scholarship. Compared to other aspects of climate and energy policy evaluation, however, there are still relatively few of these co-benefits analyses. This sparsity reflects a historical disconnect between research quantifying energy and climate, and research dealing with air quality and health. The air quality co-benefits of climate, clean energy, and transportation electrification policies are typically assessed with models spanning social, physical, chemical

Hazardous Air Pollutants in Fresh and Aged Western US Wildfire Smoke and Implications for Long-Term Exposure.

Wildfires have a significant adverse impact on air quality in the United States (US). To understand the potential health impacts of wildfire smoke, many epidemiology studies rely on concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM) as a smoke tracer. However, there are many gas-phase hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) identified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that are also present in wildfire smoke plumes. Using observations from the Western Wildfire Experiment for Cloud Chemistry, Aerosol Absorption, and Nitrogen (WE-CAN), a 2018 aircraft-based field campaign that measured HAPs and PM…

Impact of mixing layer height variations on air pollutant concentrations and health in a European urban area: Madrid (Spain), a case study.

The occurrence of local high-pollution episodes in densely populated urban areas, which have huge fleets of vehicles, is currently one of the most worrying problems associated with air pollution worldwide. Such episodes are produced under specific meteorological conditions, which favour the sudden increase of levels of air pollutants. This study has investigated the influence of the mixing layer height (MLH) on the concentration levels of atmospheric pollutants and daily mortality in Madrid, Spain, during the period 2011-2014. It may help to understand the causes and impact of local high-pollu
