Surgical repair of acute and chronic pectoralis major tendon rupture: clinical and ultrasound outcomes at a mean follow-up of 5 years.

BACKGROUND: Pectoralis major (PM) tendon rupture is an uncommon injury whose incidence has risen in recent decades mainly as a result of the increasing number of sports-practising individuals. This study evaluates clinical and ultrasound (US) outcomes after surgical repair of acute and chronic PM tendon rupture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve men with PM tendon rupture (9 right and 3 left shoulders) were enrolled. Mean age was 34.6 years, and mean follow-up was 60 months (range 12-108). Rupture was diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging. Eight patients underwent direct tendon repair (acute gr

Upper Crossed Syndrome in the Workplace: A Narrative Review with Clinical Recommendations for Non-Pharmacologic Management.

PROBLEM STATEMENT: Upper crossed syndrome (UCS), as first described by Janda, refers to a group of muscle imbalances in which tightness in the upper trapezius and levator scapulae dorsally cross with tightness in the pectoralis major and minor muscles, and weakness of deep cervical flexors cross ventrally with weakness of the middle and lower trapezius. Postural alterations from this dysfunction, including forward head, rounded shoulders, and scapular dyskinesis, contribute to upper-back and shoulder pain, particularly among office workers who spend long periods of the workday on a computer. Dual pattern of immune-related hepatotoxicity induced by pembrolizumab: hepatitis and sclerosing cholangitis.

This study aimed to compare the mechanical (lifting velocity and maximum number of repetitions), physiological (muscular activation, lactate, heart rate, and blood pressure), and psychological (rating of perceived exertion) responses to upper-body pushing exercises performed wearing a sports elastomeric garment or a placebo garment. Nineteen physically active young adults randomly completed two training sessions that differed only in the sports garment used (elastomeric technology or placebo). In each session, subjects performed one set of seated shoulder presses and another set of push-ups un

Rib-sparing scalenectomy for neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome: Early results.

OBJECTIVE: Neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (NTOS) is no longer either "controversial" or "disputed"; however, its optimal surgical management remains unclear. Many thoracic outlet decompression procedures are performed by first rib resection, usually via a transaxillary route. METHODS: A retrospective review of a prospectively maintained NTOS database was performed. Patients with NTOS associated with a cervical rib and those with recurrent NTOS were excluded from the present analysis. All study patients had satisfied a 5-point clinical diagnostic protocol and had experienced a positive re

Effect of scapular orientation on shoulder internal impingement in a cadaveric model of the cocking phase of throwing.

BACKGROUND: Although deviations in scapular orientation are thought to predispose to shoulder injuries in throwing athletes, the biomechanical mechanism underlying shoulder injuries in throwing athletes with an altered scapular orientation remains unclear. METHODS: Seven fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders were evaluated at 90° of abduction, with the humerus externally rotated from 90° to the maximum angle, to simulate the late cocking phase of the throwing motion. Loads were applied to the deltoid, pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi, teres major, and all rotator cuff muscles. Contact pressure i

Nerve reconstruction: A cohort study of 93 cases of global brachial plexus palsy.

INTRODUCTION: Brachial plexus injury leading to flail upper limb is one of the most disabling injuries. Neglect of the injury and delay in surgeries may preclude reinnervation of the paralysed muscles. Currently for such injuries nerve transfers are the preferred procedures. We here present a series of 93 cases of global brachial plexus palsy treated with nerve transfers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-three cases of global palsies out of 384 cases of brachial plexus injury operated by the senior surgeon (AB) were selected. Age varied from 4 to 51 years with 63 patients in 20 to 40 age group a

Curcumin alleviates the effects of heat stress on broiler pectoral muscle via decorin (DCN) -mediated TGF-β Signaling pathway.

This study investigates the molecular mechanism by which curcumin (CUR) alleviates oxidative damage and developmental inhibition in pectoral muscles of white-feather broiler chickens under heat stress by regulating the decorin (DCN)-mediated TGF-β signaling pathway. 1-day-old Arbor Acres white-feathered broilers (n = 108) were randomly divided into 3 groups: control (normal temperature, 22 ± 1°C), heat stress (HS, 34 ± 1°C, 8 h/d), and HS + curcumin (300 mg/kg diet). After 21 days of treatment, pectoral muscle tissues were collected for TMT proteomics analysis. Primary chicken embryonic myobla

Pharyngeal reconstruction using a U-shaped pectoralis major myocutaneous flap: an effective technique that should not be forgotten.

INTRODUCTION: Although free tissue transfer is thought the best option for head and neck reconstruction, the pectoralis major myocutaneous flap (PMMCF) remains an important alternative method. The aim of this study was to assess the use of the PMMCF with the prevertebral fascia to close a pharyngeal defect. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 30 patients who underwent circumferential pharyngeal defect reconstruction with a U-shaped PMMCF from 2009 to 2018. The flap was primarily used to reconstruct defects after tumor extirpation. RESULTS: One patient (3.3%) died of an a

Distribution of axillary lymph node metastases in different levels and groups in breast cancer, a pathological study.

BACKGROUND: It was observed during dissection of heavy deposits of axillary lymph nodes (LNs) in breast cancer that there were grossly positive LNs outside the confines of classical axillary dissection. AIM OF STUDY: To know the extent of LN metastases in these new basins by dissecting and labeling them separately, for pathological examination and proper staging of those patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 2005 to 2009, 59 private patients with breast cancer who had positive axillary LNs were subjected to axillary dissection with accurate leveling according to its relation to pectoralis min

Endoscopic transaxillary approach to the thyroid gland: our early experience.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid nodules are a common occurrence in clinical practice today. Most nodules are benign and can be managed nonoperatively with careful medical follow-up. However surgical extirpation occasionally becomes necessary to exclude a malignant neoplastic process. Although the majority of surgically excised thyroid lesions are histologically benign, patients are traditionally left with a permanent transverse surgical scar in a highly visible area of the neck. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From August 2003 to August 2005, we performed a transaxillary endoscopic thyroid lobectomy with isthmect

Necrotizing fasciitis of the chest wall.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a highly morbid soft tissue infection that rarely involves the upper torso. An extremely unusual case of necrotizing fasciitis of the chest wall is reported, including the method by which an open thoracic cage was managed. This represents the second reported case of a patient surviving necrotizing fasciitis of the chest wall requiring rib resection and chest wall reconstruction.

Tissue oximetry for the diagnosis of neurally mediated syncope.

This study examined the potential clinical contribution of noninvasive brain and skeletal muscle oximetry as a diagnostic aid in neurally mediated syncope. Tilt table testing was performed in 15 patients with a history of syncope and 9 healthy volunteers. Spatially resolved reflectance near-infrared spectroscopy was used to examine regional oxyhemoglobin saturation in the frontal cerebral cortex and pectoral muscle. During upright tilt, syncope occurred in four patients. Each episode was associated with bradycardia, hypotension, and brain oxygen desaturation of > 20% from the supine reference

Comparison between antibiotic irrigation and mobilization of pectoral muscle flaps in treatment of deep sternal infections.

Between January of 1978 and December of 1983, 41 patients developed deep sternal infections with mediastinitis after cardiac operations. Between January of 1978 and December of 1981, 19 of these patients were treated with débridement, primary wound closure, and mediastinal antibiotic irrigation (Group I). Between January of 1982 and December of 1983, 22 patients were treated with débridement, open "clean" packing, and delayed wound closure by the technique of pectoral muscle flap mobilization, which preserves the thoracoacromial pedicles and the pectoral humeral attachments (Group II). The pur

Proteomics and lipidomics analysis of the breast muscles to investigate the effect of dietary copper level on the meat quality of pigeons.

Pigeon meat, known for its high nutritional value and tender texture, can be influenced by various dietary factors. Copper, an essential trace mineral, plays a vital role in growth, development, and overall meat quality. However, its impact on pigeon meat has not been well studied. This study evaluated the effects of dietary copper supplementation on production performance, carcass traits, meat quality, fatty acid composition, and protein profiles in squabs. A total of 120 pairs of 60-week-old White King pigeon breeders (one male and one female per pair) were randomly assigned to five dietary

Familial Poland anomaly revisited.

Poland anomaly (PA) is a pectoral muscle hypoplasia/aplasia variably associated with ipsilateral thoracic (TA) and/or upper limb anomalies (ULA). PA is usually sporadic and sometimes familial, making recurrence risk an issue in genetic counseling. Multidisciplinary evaluation of 240 PA patients was carried out, including physical examination of patients and their parents in 190 PA (subjects of the study). Familial conditions were classified into three groups. Group1: true familial PA (F-PA): pectoral muscle defects with familial recurrence: 8(4.2%). Group2: familial Poland-like anomaly familie
