Gold microspheres modified with octadecanethiol as chromatographic stationary phase were prepared. The particles were characterized by the scanning electron micrograph (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), elemental analysis and nitrogen adsorption analysis. The average diameter, the surface area and the average pore diameter were 3.5 microm, 49.0 m2/g and 5.0 nm, respectively. The IR spectra demonstrated that C18 was bonded to the surface of gold microspheres with the carbon content of 0.56%. Using these microspheres as stationary phase, a 19 cm section of a total length of

Reversed-phase liquid chromatography has been applied in order to gain insight into the alpha-cyclodextrin (alpha-CD)-solute complexation process, which occurs in the aqueous mobile phases containing a secondary achiral modifier. The model compounds tested were (+/-)-camphor and (+/-)-alpha-pinene. Methanol, ethanol, and 1 or 2-propanol were used as secondary modifiers. Retention factors and enantioseparation factors have been determined on a RP 18 stationary phase as a function of the alpha-CD concentration, secondary modifier content, and temperature changes. The shortest retention and the b

To use renewable energy and mitigate the greenhouse gas effect on the environment, carbon dioxide (CO2) separation is crucial. Recent research has shown that using membranes for CO2 separation is a vital option, but challenges remain with permeability and selectivity. Blend hollow fiber membranes offer a solution to these challenges. In this study, a blend of hollow fiber membranes made of polyether sulfone (PES) and polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) was developed, along with the incorporation of fillers, to overcome the permselectivity challenge. This resulted in the creation of mixed matrix blend hol

The increasing global demand for sustainable materials has intensified research into starch-based biopolymers for membrane applications. Starch, a renewable and biodegradable polysaccharide, offers advantages such as hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, and ease of chemical modification, making it an attractive candidate for environmentally friendly membranes. Starch films have been widely used in the food packaging and medical industries; however, the application of starch in separation membranes has been less investigated. This review examines developments in separation starch-derived membranes

INTRODUCTION: Differential mobility separation (DMS) is an analytical technique used for rapid separation of ions and isomers based on gas phase mobility prior to entering a mass spectrometer for analysis. The entire DMS process is accomplished in fewer than 20 ms and can be used as a rapid alternative to chromatographic separation.
OBJECTIVE: The primary objective was to evaluate the utility of DMS-tandem mass spectrometry (DMS-MS/MS) as a replacement for immunoassay-based clinical toxicology testing.
METHODS: A sensitive DMS-MS/MS method was developed and validated for simultaneous identif

A comparative study of chiral separation of pantoprazole and rabeprazole is carried out using supercritical fluid chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography. The columns used were Chiralpak IA and Chiralpak IE. The best mobile phase in supercritical fluid chromatography was carbon dioxide-0.2% triethylamine in methanol (60:40) and 0.1% triethylamine in n-hexane-ethanol (50:50) in high-performance liquid chromatography. For supercritical fluid chromatography, values of the retention factor of pantoprazole enantiomers were 3.97 and 4.88. These values for rabeprazole enantiomers we

The presented paper is the first to show thin layer chromatography (TLC) analysis based on eutectic mobile phases (Deep Eutectic Solvents - DES). During the experiment 25 eutectic mixtures were investigated for their chromatographic properties. Most of them belong to the natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) group. Also, new eutectic liquids based on phenolics and terpenes, not previously employed in analytical practice, were tested. The eutectic liquids were investigated as pure or diluted with solvents used in chromatographic routine: methanol, water, acetone, chloroform or diethyl ether. T

The separation of water-in-oil emulsions in harsh environment (strong acid/alkali) is a challenging subject. In this study, we prepared a superhydrophobic-superoleophilic polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) membrane by the mixture of hydrophobic SiO2 nanoparticles, diphenyl ketone (DPK), benzoin (BZ) and PPS via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) technology. This superhydrophobic membrane displayed a lotus leaf-like micro-nano structure, and it could be used for oil/water separation in strong acidic or alkaline environment. The hydrophobic SiO2 nanoparticles played a key role in the membrane st…

A major challenge in metabolomic studies is how to extract and analyze an entire metabolome. So far, no single method was able to clearly complete this task in an efficient and reproducible way. In this work we proposed a sequential strategy for the extraction and chromatographic separation of metabolites from leaves Jatropha gossypifolia using a design of experiments and partial least square model. The effect of 14 different solvents on extraction process was evaluated and an optimized separation condition on liquid chromatography was estimated considering mobile phase composition and analysi

A dual-channel gas chromatographic method is described in this paper that can be conveniently used for quantitation of NF3/CF4 mixtures with a thermal conductivity detector (TCD) on one channel for the quantitation of high-concentrations, and a pulsed discharge helium ionization detector (PDHID) on a second channel for the quantitation of low concentrations. It is shown that adequate separation is achieved on both channels with this dual single-column setup in which column switching as used for NF3/CF4 analysis in industrial chromatographic methods are not required, thus yielding an effective

The enantiomers of the anorectic drug amfepramone [rac-diethylpropion, rac-2-(diethylamino)-1-phenyl-1-propanone; rac-DEP] were separated in the preparative scale by crystallization. With enantiopure di-O-benzoyltartaric acid as salt-forming chiral selector, diastereoisomeric salts of DEP enantiomers with a final purity of more than 97.5% were obtained. Analytical liquid chromatographic and electrophoretic methods for the control of the enantiomeric purity and the stoichiometry of the salts were developed. The enantioseparation of rac-DEP by capillary electrophoresis (CE) using hydroxypropyl-b

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is an osmotic laxative that induces concentration-dependent shifts in gut microbial composition. In mouse PEG-challenge experiments, Muribaculaceae decline during exposure, whereas Bacteroidaceae remain stable or increase in relative representation. We analyzed these family-level trajectories using an effective two-family competition-immigration model on the sequencing-derived relative-abundance scale. The model is a switching-regime generalized Lotka-Volterra system with logistic self-limitation, constant immigration, and separate PEG and post-PEG parameter sets fitt

Additive engineering has become a critical strategy for optimizing the morphology and performance of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells (OSCs), while volatile solid additives have been widely employed to control nanoscale phase separation during film formation. Concerns regarding reproducibility, residual solvent effects, and long-term stability have stimulated increasing interest in non-volatile solid additives. In recent years, solid additive engineering has emerged as a promising approach for modulating molecular packing, regulating phase separation, enhancing charge transport, a…

Accumulated TEAD is associated with increased liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) formation, promotes YAP nuclear translocation, induces YAP-TEAD co-phase separation. The elevated YAP/TEAD condensates collectively upregulate downstream target gene expression and compromise the anti-proliferative activity of osimertinib. Ba …

Boronic acids (BAs) reversibly bind to diol structures in a pH-dependent manner and have attracted attention as a method for separating glycoproteins based on their sugar chains. However, commonly used phenylboronic acid reacts only under basic conditions, which can cause protein denaturation and aggregation. To address this issue, we focused on BPA, BBX, PBA-CF3, and PBA-F, which are expected to have lower pKa values due to their electron-withdrawing groups. In this study, we designed and synthesized a novel stationary phase by immobilizing these BA derivatives onto silica particles for HPLC

Biomolecular condensates are membraneless assemblies that concentrate proteins, nucleic acids, and other biomolecules into dynamic cellular compartments. Liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) is one important route by which such condensates form, particularly when multivalent interactions generate liquid-like, reversible assemblies. However, not every condensate or disease-associated assembly should be explained solely by LLPS. In the musculoskeletal system, condensates have been linked to transcription, signal transduction, RNA metabolism, stress responses, tissue development, homeostasis, an…

Gold nanoparticle-based vesicular nanostructures are attractive drug delivery platforms because of their tunable plasmonic properties; however, simultaneously achieving efficient cargo encapsulation, robust aqueous stability, and controllable near-infrared (NIR)-triggered release remains challenging. Herein, water-dispersible and NIR-responsive gold nanorod capsules (Au NrCs) are fabricated from mini-gold nanorods (mini-Au NRs) and small amphiphilic hexaethylene glycol (EG6) ligands via a solute-induced phase separation strategy. Owing to their compact dimensions and tunable longitudinal local…

Riparian zones are natural hotspots for reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, yet the spatiotemporal dynamics of ROS within these zones remain poorly understood. In this study, we combine results from a flume experiment and reactive transport modeling to show that H2O2 production is governed by a "chromatographic" separation process in which water flow modulates the interplay of O2 and reductants. The riparian aquifer matrix acts as the stationary phase hosting various mobile and immobile reductants, while water flow serves as the mobile phase supplying oxidants, here dissolved oxygen (DO)
