E2T: EEG-to-Trajectory Transformer for Motor Imagery-Based Fully-DoF Motion Prediction.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) using electroencephalography (EEG) enable non-invasive, real-time interaction for individuals with motor impairments by decoding neural signals associated with movement intention. Although traditional classification-based motor imagery (MI) BCIs translate discrete EEG patterns into predefined commands, such approaches inherently lack the flexibility required for continuous and naturalistic movement control. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel EEG-based decoding framework that directly predicts continuous 3D upper limb trajectories using a hybrid d

Uni-Hand: Universal Hand Motion Forecasting in Egocentric Views.

Forecasting how human hands move in egocentric views is critical for applications like augmented reality, human-robot policy transfer, and service/assistive technologies. Recently, several hand trajectory prediction (HTP) methods have been developed to generate future possible hand waypoints, which still suffer from insufficient prediction targets, inherent modality gaps, entangled hand-head motion, and limited validation in downstream tasks. To address these limitations, we present Uni-Hand, a universal hand motion forecasting framework considering multi-modal input, multi-dimensional and mul

On Leveraging Machine Learning in Sport Science in the Hypothetico-deductive Framework.

Supervised machine learning (ML) offers an exciting suite of algorithms that could benefit research in sport science. In principle, supervised ML approaches were designed for pure prediction, as opposed to explanation, leading to a rise in powerful, but opaque, algorithms. Recently, two subdomains of ML-explainable ML, which allows us to "peek into the black box," and interpretable ML, which encourages using algorithms that are inherently interpretable-have grown in popularity. The increased transparency of these powerful ML algorithms may provide considerable support for the hypothetico-deduc

Deep Learning-Based Facial and Skeletal Transformations for Surgical Planning.

The increasing application of virtual surgical planning (VSP) in orthognathic surgery implies a critical need for accurate prediction of facial and skeletal shapes. The craniofacial relationship in patients with dentofacial deformities is still not understood, and transformations between facial and skeletal shapes remain a challenging task due to intricate anatomical structures and nonlinear relationships between the facial soft tissue and bones. In this study, a novel bidirectional 3-dimensional (3D) deep learning framework, named P2P-ConvGC, was developed and validated based on a large-scale

Combined Use of Glucose-Specific Model Identification and Alarm Strategy Based on Prediction-Funnel to Improve Online Forecasting of Hypoglycemic Events.

BACKGROUND: Advanced decision support systems for type 1 diabetes (T1D) management often embed prediction modules, which allow T1D people to take preventive actions to avoid critical episodes like hypoglycemia. Real-time prediction of blood glucose (BG) concentration relies on a subject-specific model of glucose-insulin dynamics. Model parameter identification is usually based on the mean square error (MSE) cost function, and the model is usually used to predict BG at a single prediction horizon (PH). Finally, a hypo-alarm is raised if the predicted BG crosses a threshold. This work aims to sh

Development of a multi-wear-site, deep learning-based physical activity intensity classification algorithm using raw acceleration data.

BACKGROUND: Accelerometers are widely adopted in research and consumer devices as a tool to measure physical activity. However, existing algorithms used to estimate activity intensity are wear-site-specific. Non-compliance to wear instructions may lead to misspecifications. In this study, we developed deep neural network models to classify device placement and activity intensity based on raw acceleration data. Performances of these models were evaluated by making comparisons to the ground truth and results derived from existing count-based algorithms. METHODS: 54 participants (26 adults 26.9±

Warming up ground-state orbitals: A route to excitation energies?

Linear-response time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) is the workhorse of spectral prediction, yet it can struggle to predict or even describe important low-lying excitation energies. An alternative is to use static formalisms to target excited-state energies directly from variational density functional theory (DFT). This may involve using custom excited-state functionals or feeding excited-state orbitals and densities into standard ground-state approximations, and can often be effective, even for describing states for which adiabatic TDDFT fails. However, this comes at the cost of
