Temporal processing in low-frequency channels: effects of age and hearing loss in middle-aged listeners.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss and age interfere with the auditory system's ability to process temporal changes in the acoustic signal. A key unresolved question is whether high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss (HFSNHL) affects temporal processing in the low-frequency region where hearing loss is minimal or nonexistent. A second unresolved question is whether changes in hearing occur in middle-aged subjects in the absence of HFSNHL. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to examine the influence of HFSNHL and aging on the auditory temporal processing abilities of low-frequency audi

Modeling speech intelligibility in quiet and noise in listeners with normal and impaired hearing.

The speech intelligibility index (SII) is an often used calculation method for estimating the proportion of audible speech in noise. For speech reception thresholds (SRTs), measured in normally hearing listeners using various types of stationary noise, this model predicts a fairly constant speech proportion of about 0.33, necessary for Dutch sentence intelligibility. However, when the SII model is applied for SRTs in quiet, the estimated speech proportions are often higher, and show a larger inter-subject variability, than found for speech in noise near normal speech levels [65 dB sound pressu

Effects of age and hearing loss on gap detection and the precedence effect: narrow-band stimuli.

Deficits in temporal resolution and/or the precedence effect may underlie part of the speech understanding difficulties experienced by older listeners in degraded acoustic environments. In a previous investigation, R. Roberts and J. Lister (2004) identified a positive correlation between measures of temporal resolution and the precedence effect, specifically across-channel gap detection (as measured dichotically) and fusion. Across-channel gap detection may also be measured using frequency-disparate markers. Thus, the present investigation was designed to determine if the relation is specific

Decline of speech understanding and auditory thresholds in the elderly.

A group of 29 elderly subjects between 60.0 and 83.7 years of age at the beginning of the study, and whose hearing loss was not greater than moderate, was tested twice, an average of 5.27 years apart. The tests measured pure-tone thresholds, word recognition in quiet, and understanding of speech with various types of distortion (low-pass filtering, time compression) or interference (single speaker, babble noise, reverberation). Performance declined consistently and significantly between the two testing phases. In addition, the variability of speech understanding measures increased significantl

Temporal modulation transfer functions obtained using sinusoidal carriers with normally hearing and hearing-impaired listeners.

Temporal modulation transfer functions were obtained using sinusoidal carriers for four normally hearing subjects and three subjects with mild to moderate cochlear hearing loss. Carrier frequencies were 1000, 2000 and 5000 Hz, and modulation frequencies ranged from 10 to 640 Hz in one-octave steps. The normally hearing subjects were tested using levels of 30 and 80 dB SPL. For the higher level, modulation detection thresholds varied only slightly with modulation frequency for frequencies up to 80 Hz, but decreased for high modulation frequencies. The decrease can be attributed to the detection

Age-related hearing loss and bone mass in a population of rural women aged 60 to 85 years.

Demineralization of the cochlear capsule in conjunction with age-related bone mass loss may be one biologic factor contributing to hearing loss in the elderly. In other metabolic bone diseases, including Paget's disease of the bone and cochlear otosclerosis, demineralization of the cochlea has been associated with sensorineural hearing loss. In 1988/1989, the relation between hearing loss and bone mass of the radius and femoral neck was studied cross-sectionally in 369 women aged 60 to 85 years from three rural communities. Hearing sensitivity was measured using audiometry, and bone mineral de

Influence of genotype and age on acute acoustic trauma and recovery in CBA/Ca and C57BL/6J mice.

Two inbred strains of mice, CBA/Ca (with a moderate auditory impairment starting late in life) and C57BL/6J (with a progressive auditory degeneration starting during young adulthood), were exposed to a 120 dB SPL broadband noise (2-7 kHz) for 5 min at the age of 1, 3, or 6 months. Compound and permanent threshold shifts (CTS and PTS) were determined by auditory brainstem response during the first day (CTS) and 1 month (PTS) after exposure. With increasing age, susceptibility to CTS at middle frequencies (8 and 12.5 kHz) decreased in CBA mice, yet was retained in C57 mice. C57 mice were more se

Effect of noise on word discrimination by subjects with impaired hearing, compared with those with normal hearing.

A comparison was made of the discrimination ability of different groups of hearing-impaired and normal-hearing subjects in noisy conditions. Four groups of subjects having a sensorineural hearing loss with various audiogram configurations, one group of subjects having a conductive hearing loss and one group of normal-hearing subjects were chosen. The submaster tapes were recorded in quiet and in pink noise with signal-to-noise ratios of -3, -8, and -13 dB. The test subjects heard the test words monaurally via earphones. The best speech discrimination was achieved in quiet, anechoic conditions.

Age-related hearing loss in BDF1 mice as evidenced by the brainstem auditory evoked potential.

Age-related hearing loss was studied in unanesthetized female BDF1 mice using brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) latency-intensity (L-I) profiles and BAEP thresholds. The mice were divided into 5 age-related groups: 3-4 months, 5.5-7 months, 9-10 months, 12 months and 18 months. Relative to the youngest group, BAEP threshold data indicated shifts in auditory sensitivity ranging from +6 dB for the 5.5- to 7-month-old group to +71 dB for the 18-month-old group. The BAEP L-I profiles of older mice were consistent with recruitment-type sensorineural (cochlear) hearing losses. No evidence o

The influence of hearing loss on directional hearing.

Fifty patients with cochlear hearing loss were tested with phase audiometry. Thirty-three of the patients had unilateral hearing loss at 500 Hz and 17 bilateral, symmetrical hearing loss at 500 Hz. Those patients who had slight hearing loss (less than 40 dB HL) had as a rule normal directional hearing. Those who had hearing loss exceeding 40 dB HL at 500 Hz usually had abnormal directional hearing. The sound lateralization ability was independent of whether the hearing loss was unilateral or bilateral.

Some parameters affecting Békésy audiometric thresholds.

Bekesy automatic audiometric findings may be affected by various factors such as contralateral masking, starting frequency, starting level, exposure to stimulating sound and different stages of some disease entity. These findings are seen mostly on steady-tone tracings as revealed by peak-to-peak amplitude reductions and threshold drifts. This paper is concerned with automatic audiometry parameters which have been little known or ignored by many investigators. Detailed audiometric case histories from 6 patients with a variety of unilateral sensorineural hearing impairments showed, e.g., that c

DEAFNESS.

Dr T E T Weston describes his research into the effect of noise on hearing acuity and of deafness in the aged. He found that presbyacusis is associated with a multiplicity of factors, e.g. smoking, circulatory disturbance, urban domicile, heredity and occupational acoustic trauma.Miss W Galbraith describes the social implications of various degrees of deafness and the ways in which they can be overcome by such measures as lipreading, hearing aids and rehabilitation.Sir Terence Cawthorne discusses otosclerosis, nearly 1% of the population being affected by this type of deafness. He describes th

A non-invasive test for stria vascularis dysfunction.

Age-related hearing loss is common in the human population but it is highly heterogeneous in aetiology which has hampered efforts to develop ways of stopping its progression. Three major sites of the initial dysfunction are the sensory hair cells, their innervation, and the stria vascularis which generates the high potassium endolymph maintained at a high endocochlear potential bathing the apical surface of hair cells. Treatments aimed at the initial site-of-lesion may be useful, and diagnostic tools to distinguish the primary site would help stratify clinical trials and facilitate selection o
