Factors associated with behavioral euthanasia in pet dogs.

When pet dogs demonstrate certain serious problem behaviors, this may lead owners to choose behavioral euthanasia. However, research on behavioral euthanasia of pet dogs is sparse and previously published papers have not specifically sampled owners who made the decision to euthanize for behavior. The Behavioral Euthanasia in Pet Dogs Questionnaire was created to collect a wide range of information from dog owners who made behavioral euthanasia decisions. Using this survey, we explored the types of behaviors associated with behavioral euthanasia. Human-directed aggression, especially toward adu…

Frequent Gamblers' Reasons for and Against Completing a Problem Gambling Screener.

Problem gambling screeners are easily accessible and potentially reduce harm for those individuals who engage in risky levels of gambling behavior. However, a recent study found that when frequent gamblers were offered the chance to complete a screener and receive feedback, most chose not to do so. In this paper, secondary analysis was completed on frequent gamblers' open-ended responses to questions regarding reasons for and against completing a problem gambling screener. Participants (N = 262) were individuals who gambled at least once per week and were not currently being treated for gambli

Prevention of problem gambling in Chinese adolescents: relevance of problem gambling assessment and positive youth development frameworks.

Although research findings show that adolescent gambling behavior is a growing problem, there are not many theory-driven prevention programs in the Chinese context. In this paper, two approaches of developing Chinese adolescent prevention program are described. In the first approach, it is argued that related programs should be developed with reference to the risk factors of problem gambling based on problem gambling assessment tools and frameworks. The modified Chinese G-MAP is used as an example to illustrate this approach. In the second approach, it is argued that programs incorporating pos

First evaluation of Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory for foster children in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral problems of foster children are an important issue for the maintenance of the foster care system, but they have not been adequately studied in Japan. We used the Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI) to investigate behavioral problems among foster children and to examine associated factors. METHODS: Twenty-nine foster children and their foster parents and 479 non-foster children and parents were recruited for the foster and control groups, respectively. Both groups underwent statistical comparative analyses using data from their ECBI assessments. The ECBI has two scale

Changes in sleep duration and disturbances during Covid-19 lockdown and internalizing-externalizing behaviors in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To examine how changes in sleep patterns and sleep problems occurring between the pre-pandemic and the Covid-19 lockdown period influenced mood-behavioral functioning of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). METHODS: Parents of 992 children with ADHD (85.4% boys, mean age: 11.52 years, SD = 3.17), recruited from the Italian ADHD family association, completed a modified version of the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children and filled out 11 emotional behavioral items selected from the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) 6-18 questionnaire. Subgroups identified bas

Sex-specific association between placental inflammatory cytokine mRNA expression and preschoolers' behavioral development: The Ma'anshan birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Placental inflammation may contribute to brain abnormalities and childhood neuropsychiatric disorders, but limited knowledge is available on the association of placental inflammatory cytokine levels and offspring's behavioral development. This study aimed to examine the sex-specific association between placental inflammatory cytokine mRNA expression and preschoolers' behavioral development. METHODS: 3474 pregnant women were recruited as the initial study population in the Ma'anshan birth cohort (MABC) study. Placentas (n = 2519) were collected during childbirth, and the mRNA expre

School-based, short-term group treatment for behaviorally disturbed young adolescent males: a pilot intervention.

Behaviorally maladjusted students represent a serious problem for schools. A short-term group counseling program was initiated as an alternative to out-of-school suspensions for male students in a middle school (grades six-eight). Thirteen adolescents were identified for group treatment. All received a standard psychiatric interview, and standard measures of self-concept, anxiety, cognitive complexity, and sexual maturity. Eleven students referred to the program had conduct disorders supported by Devereux Behavior profiles. Compared to 48 males of similar age (m = 12.5 years) without behavior

The development and psychometric validation of the Assessment of Sexual Behavior-Child version (ASB-C).

Problematic sexual behavior (PSB) among preteen children is increasingly being recognized as a public health problem, in part because of short- and long-term consequences experienced by the children with PSB and by others impacted by their behavior. Unfortunately, the lack of assessment measures grounded in contemporary research hinders progress in the field. The Assessment of Sexual Behavior-Child version is a 38-item caregiver-report instrument that was developed to remedy this problem. It was tested across three samples: a nationally representative sample (n = 1,400), a smaller replication

Perceived Value Influencing the Household Waste Sorting Behaviors in Rural China.

Waste sorting is the cardinal measurement to solve the problem of low efficiency of rural environmental governance and to alleviate environmental pollution by reduction, recycling, and harmlessness in rural areas. However, non-excludable and non-rival features of public goods easily cause a wide free-rider problem, which results in a low frequency of participation in the waste sorting of rural people. Based on the theory of the utility maximization of the rational economic man, this paper investigates survey data of 688 farm households in three cities and three counties of Shaanxi Province to

Emotional understanding, cooperation, and social behavior in high-functioning children with autism.

In contrast to typically developing children, children with autism rarely exhibit cooperative social behavior. To examine whether this problem reflects global developmental delays or autism-specific deficits, the present study compared cooperation, emotional understanding, personality characteristics, and social behavior of 10 children with autism who had average IQ to those of 16 children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and 10 typically developing children. In cooperative behavior, level of emotional understanding, and aloof behavio

Effects of Topper Training on psychosocial problems, self-esteem, and peer victimisation in Dutch children: A randomised trial.

Most interventions aimed at improving social interactions either target internalising or externalising problem behaviour in children. However, a recent review shows that a transdiagnostic approach might fit better to the diversity of problems within a group and within an individual (comorbidity). We examined the effectiveness of a transdiagnostic intervention, called Topper Training: a cognitive behavioural intervention in the peer group with parents included, that targets both internalising and externalising behaviour problems. A randomised trial with a waiting list control group was conducte

Classifying complex pediatric feeding disorders.

BACKGROUND: This study defines the multiple characteristics associated with complex pediatric feeding problems and determines the relative frequency of each classification in a population referred to an interdisciplinary feeding team. METHODS: The written reports from team evaluations on 103 children (64 males, 39 females; age range 4 months to 17 years) were reviewed. Prematurity and/or presence of developmental delay was coded. Identified factors related to current feeding problems were coded according to five categories: structural abnormalities, neurological conditions, behavioral issues,

Beyond the feedback: a student-directed case-based collaborative learning Review committee.

INTRODUCTION: The curriculum of the Doctor of Medicine program at The University of Kansas School of Medicine includes a substantial portion of content delivered via small-group, case-based collaborative learning (CBCL) activities. As critical stakeholders in continuous quality improvement in their education, medical students are poised to make contributions to curriculum enhancement, though they are often underutilized resources. METHODS: Without a faculty-led curriculum revision committee, we piloted a student-led Case-Based Collaborative Learning Review Committee (SCRC) to systematically i

Aperiodic activity shapes inter-brain synchrony during cooperative puzzle solving: dissociable task-enhanced and partner-specific spectral signatures.

Inter-brain synchrony (IBS) is increasingly used as a neural marker of social coordination. Yet standard hyperscanning pipelines rarely distinguish partner-specific coupling from parallel task engagement, and scarcely account for aperiodic (1/f) contributions to phase-based metrics. Here, in 10 dyads (N = 20) of close friends from Latin America recorded with dual mobile EEG during cooperative Jenga puzzle-solving, video co-watching, and eyes-closed resting, we combined cluster-permutation statistics, dyad-shuffled surrogate controls, spectral parameterization, and edge-level mixed-effects mode

Illness perceptions and behavioural responses as mechanisms of change in problem-solving treatment for Veterans with Gulf War Illness.

OBJECTIVE: Persistent 'medically unexplained' physical symptoms and syndromes (PPS), an umbrella term for symptom-based conditions with poorly understood pathophysiology and aetiology, disproportionately impact Gulf War Veterans. Behavioural interventions are efficacious and recommended as first-line treatments for PPS, but the mechanisms by which these interventions work remain unknown. This study sought to identify mechanisms of change that make problem-solving treatment (PST) efficacious for Veterans living with Gulf War Illness (GWI), a common form of PPS among Veterans who served in Opera

Challenging behaviour by patients or close contacts, as experienced by healthcare workers in adult general and university hospital care: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare professionals in general and academic hospitals increasingly face challenging behaviour from patients and their close contacts, particularly in acute care settings. Ranging from aggression to socially inappropriate actions, such behaviour is understood as interactional and context-dependent. Yet research largely focuses on verbal and physical aggression, leaving other forms and hospital context underexplored, despite concerns about staff safety, workforce sustainability and care quality. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This scoping review aims to map literature on challenging b

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Disruptive Behavior in a Child With Eosinophilic Esophagitis and Failure to Thrive.

Ryan is a 6-year-old boy with a history of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and poor weight gain referred to developmental-behavioral pediatrics (DBP) for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Ryan's mother was concerned about Ryan's defiance and daily emotional outbursts, which could last up to an hour. Ryan's teachers frequently contacted the family due to disruptive behavior, impulsivity, and sneaking food.Ryan was born prematurely at 28 weeks and required nasogastric feeds for 1 month in the NICU. He has a history of reflux requiring proton

Friendship relationships, psychological well-being, and social problem solving in primary school students.

During the primary school years, friendships between children gradually begin to strengthen. During this process, establishing and maintaining friendships are closely related to children's psychological well-being (PWB). However, the development of this relationship can be better understood through the mediating role of social problem-solving (SPS) skills. Within the scope of the study, the nature of friendship and the meaning children attribute to it, as well as the processes of defining problems in social life, including problem-solving, producing solutions, and evaluating them, were examine

Assessing posttraumatic stress disorder symptom clusters with the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 in a forensic disability sample.

OBJECTIVE: Previous evidence indicates that scales from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) family of instruments can measure self-reported posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomology and differentiate symptom clusters, including in forensic disability assessments. However, limited research has examined assessment of PTSD symptoms with the MMPI-3, the most recent MMPI instrument. The goal of the current study was to identify the strongest MMPI-3 scale predictors of individual PTSD symptom clusters, measured via self-report. METHODS: Using a sample of 716 disability cl
