Developing a Lower Limb Lymphedema Animal Model with Combined Lymphadenectomy and Low-dose Radiation.

BACKGROUND: This study was aimed to establish a consistent lower limb lymphedema animal model for further investigation of the mechanism and treatment of lymphedema. METHODS: Lymphedema in the lower extremity was created by removing unilateral inguinal lymph nodes followed by 20, 30, and 40 Gy (groups IA, IB, and IC, respectively) radiation or by removing both inguinal lymph nodes and popliteal lymph nodes followed by 20 Gy (group II) radiation in Sprague-Dawley rats (350-400 g). Tc(99) lymphoscintigraphy was used to monitor lymphatic flow patterns. Volume differentiation was assessed by micr

Scintigraphy in prediction of the salivary gland function after gland-sparing intensity modulated radiation therapy for head and neck cancer.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To evaluate salivary gland scintigraphy in prediction of salivary flow following radiation therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer were treated with intensity modulated radiation therapy with an intention to spare the salivary gland function. The total quantitative saliva secretion was measured prior to and 6 and 12 months after therapy, and the function of the major salivary glands was monitored using Tc-99m-pertechnetate scintigraphy. Two models were designed for prediction of the post-treatment salivary flow: an average mod

Evaluation of radiation-induced oral mucositis by optical coherence tomography.

PURPOSE: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging was evaluated to determine if radiation-induced mucosal damage could be noninvasively monitored in real time and correlated with histopathologic findings. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Female C3H mice, ages 7 to 9 weeks, four per group, were immobilized in a custom-made Lucite jig and received 0, 15, 22.5, and 25 Gy in a single fraction to their oral cavity. OCT images were acquired of proximal, middle, and distal aspects of the dorsum of the tongue on days 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 post-irradiation. Animals were sacrificed on day 7 and samples taken for his

Beyond Radiation Exposure: Occupational Health Challenges Across the Modern Radiology Workforce.

Radiology occupational safety has historically centred on radiation protection. Although radiation safety remains essential, the digital transformation of imaging has expanded the occupational-health profile of the radiology workforce. Diagnostic radiologists now spend prolonged periods at PACS workstations; radiographers and reporting staff work in display-dependent environments; sonographers are exposed to sustained scanning postures and forceful transducer use; and interventional radiology teams face procedural ergonomic stressors related to standing posture, monitor position, table height,

Merkel cell carcinoma in a patient with basal cell carcinoma: a case of localized disease with negative sentinel node biopsy.

INTRODUCTION: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare but aggressive neuroendocrine skin cancer with a high risk of recurrence and metastasis. It typically affects sun-exposed areas in elderly or immunocompromised individuals. Early diagnosis and management are essential due to its rapid progression and potential for early metastasis. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 65-year-old male with a history of diabetes mellitus and basal cell carcinoma who developed MCC on his left upper extremity. Initial imaging, including a sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) and magnetic resonance imaging (M

RESEARCH OF HEMATOLOGICAL CHANGES IN INDIVIDUALS EXPOSED TO IRRADIATION FROM THE CHERNOBYL NUCLEAR POWER PLANT.

The impact of pathogenic factors caused by the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster on the blood system and hemostasis is of great interest. Deviations identified in the first years after exposure to ionizing radiation are primarily restorative and adaptive in nature. This paper presents the results of the monitoring of the changes in each separately studied indicator in the early (1987-1988) and late (2019-2020) periods after the exposure to radiation. Regression equations were obtained that describe the dynamics of changes in certain blood indicators, which make it possible to predict chan

Should we consider thyroid gland as an organ at risk in carcinoma breast patients receiving adjuvant radiation by conformal technique? A single institute dosimetric study.

BACKGROUND: The most common malignancy among Indian women is carcinoma of the breast. In the management of breast cancer (BC), radiation therapy (RT) is given to breast or chest wall and supraclavicular lymph nodal (SCLN) area, with at least part of the thyroid receiving RT dose. There is an increased incidence of hypothyroidism (HT) among BC patients after RT involving the SCLN area. Moreover, the incidence of HT in India is higher than in the West. The aim of our study is to dosimetrically evaluate the thyroid doses during RT for BC. METHODS: This is a single institute prospective study (n =

Radiation therapy may increase metastatic potential in alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: We previously determined that radiation could be safely administered using a mouse-flank in vivo model to both alveolar (Rh30) and embryonal (Rh18) rhabdomyosarcoma xenografts. Mice from both tumor lines in this experiment developed metastases, an event not previously described with these models. We sought to determine if radiation-induced changes in gene expression underlie an increase in the metastatic behavior of these tumor models. PROCEDURE: Parental Rh18 and Rh30 xenografts, as well as tumor that recurred locally after radiotherapy (Rh18RT and Rh30RT), were grown subcutaneou

Staff radiation doses in a real-time display inside the angiography room.

METHODS: The evaluation of a new occupational Dose Aware System (DAS) showing staff radiation doses in real time has been carried out in several angiography rooms in our hospital. The system uses electronic solid-state detectors with high-capacity memory storage. Every second, it archives the dose and dose rate measured and is wirelessly linked to a base-station screen mounted close to the diagnostic monitors. An easy transfer of the values to a data sheet permits further analysis of the scatter dose profile measured during the procedure, compares it with patient doses, and seeks to find the m

Regulation of mitosis in response to damaged or incompletely replicated DNA require different levels of Grapes (Drosophila Chk1).

Checkpoints monitor the state of DNA and can delay or arrest the cell cycle at multiple points including G1-S transition, progress through S phase and G2-M transition. Regulation of progress through mitosis, specifically at the metaphase-anaphase transition, occurs after exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) in Drosophila and budding yeast, but has not been conclusively demonstrated in mammals. Here we report that regulation of metaphase-anaphase transition in Drosophila depends on the magnitude of radiation dose and time in the cell cycle at which radiation is applied, which may explain the app

Studies on the migration of micronucleated erythrocytes from bone marrow to the peripheral blood in irradiated Swiss mice.

Micronucleated polychromatic (mn-PCE) and normochromatic erythrocytes (nm-NCE) were enumerated in the bone marrow and peripheral blood of Swiss male mice at different time intervals following whole-body (1.0 Gy) gamma-irradiation. Polychromatic cells migrated to the peripheral blood soon after their formation in the bone marrow and mn-PCE achieved a frequency close to that of the bone marrow with a delay of about 12 h. The optimal time for peripheral sampling was found to be about 36 h after radiation exposure. The frequency of mn-NCE in bone marrow and peripheral blood showed only a moderate

Investigation of Potential Splenic Metastasis on Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen (PSMA) Imaging in High-Risk Prostate Cancer: A Role for MRI?

Computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and bone scintigraphy are utilized to diagnose and stage prostate cancer. There is a growing interest in the utilization of prostate-specific membrane antigen-positive emission tomography (PSMA PET) scans for the diagnosis and monitoring of prostate cancer. Here, we present a case of biopsy-proven prostate cancer with solitary focal splenic uptake on PSMA PET initially concerning for splenic metastasis. Further imaging with MRI indicated a benign splenic etiology in this case. The patient underwent radiation therapy (RT) and initiated

Male reproductive impairment linked to occupational ionizing radiation exposure in radiology workers.

Chronic occupational exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) may affect male reproductive health but the underlying genetic and immunologic mechanisms remain poorly defined. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of IR on semen quality, CD56-positive natural killer (NK) cell concentration and sperm nuclear protein gene expression. In this case-control study a total of 60 men were assessed 30 radiology workers with IR exposure and 30 men in the control group. Semen analysis was performed according to WHO 2021 criteria. NK cells were determined by CD56 immunocytochemical staining and mRNA expressi

Texture Analysis of Histology Images for Characterizing Ultrasound-Stimulated Microbubble Radiation Enhancement Treatment Response.

Ultrasound-stimulated microbubble (USMB) therapy, in combination with radiotherapy (XRT), represents a promising approach to enhancing the efficacy of conventional cancer treatments by targeting tumor vasculature. Recent preclinical studies using MRI-guided focused ultrasound have demonstrated that USMB enhances radiation effects in tumor blood vessels, resulting in significantly greater tumor cell death than radiation alone. Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) has been instrumental in this methodology in mapping tumor perfusion heterogeneity, allowing for precise targeting of additional U

Occupational exposure to radiation among health workers: Genome integrity and predictors of exposure.

The current study aimed to investigate genomic instabilities in healthcare workers who may experience varying levels of radiation exposure through various radiological procedures. It also sought to determine if factors related to the work environment and dosimeter reading could effectively explain the observed genomic instabilities. Utilizing the cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay (CBMN) on peripheral blood lymphocytes, we assessed a spectrum of genomic aberrations, including nucleoplasmic bridge (NPB), nuclear budding (NBUD), micronucleus (MN) formation, and total DNA damage (TDD). The stud

Development and clinical application of bioelectrical impedance analysis method for body composition assessment.

Obesity, which is characterized by excessive body fat, increases the risk of chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers. Sarcopenia, a decline in muscle mass, is also associated with many chronic disorders and is therefore a major concern in aging populations. Body composition analysis is important in the evaluation of obesity and sarcopenia because it provides information about the distribution of body fat and muscle mass. It is also useful for monitoring nutritional status, disease severity, and the effectiveness of interventions, such as exercise
