Peer relations and different functions of cyber-aggression: A longitudinal study in Chinese adolescents.

Although previous studies have focused on the associations between peer group relations and cyber-aggression, limited attention has been paid to the heterogeneity in the functions of cyber-aggression. This study explored the unique associations of peer relations with proactive and reactive cyber-aggression and the possible mechanisms underlying them in a sample of adolescents using a longitudinal study design. A total of 829 middle school students completed the Cyber-rage and Cyber-reward Aggression Subscales of the Cyber-Aggression Typology Questionnaire, the Peer Relations Scale, the Social …

Guillain-Barré Syndrome after Novel Coronavirus Disease 2019.

BACKGROUND: Novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has affected more than 89 million people worldwide. As the pandemic rages on, more complications of the disease are being recognized, including stroke, cardiovascular disease, thromboembolic events, encephalopathy, seizures, and more. Peripheral nervous system involvement, particularly Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), is of special interest, given the increasing reports of cases related to COVID-19. Because of the potentially delayed onset of symptoms of polyradiculoneuropathy and weakness after the traditional COVID-19 symptoms, it is vitall…

A palindromic RNA sequence as a common breakpoint contributor to copy-choice recombination in SARS-COV-2.

Much remains unknown concerning the origin of the novel pandemic coronavirus that has raged across the globe since emerging in Wuhan of Hubei province, near the center of the People's Republic of China, in December of 2019. All current members of the family Coronaviridae have arisen by a combination of incremental adaptive mutations, against the backdrop of many recombinational events throughout the past, rendering each a unique mosaic of RNA sequences from diverse sources. The consensus among virologists is that the base sequence of the novel coronavirus, designated SARS-CoV-2, was derived fr…

Pediatrician, watch out for corona-phobia.

The current outbreak of COVID-19 raging globally is taking a heavy toll on the adult population, with a rapidly growing number of newly infected and critically ill patients. However, to date, mortality rate among children is low as they mostly suffer from a mild disease. Yet, other more routinely encountered childhood diseases do not stand still and continue to be the main share of pediatricians' everyday challenges. Here we describe a case series of routinely seen pediatric diseases with delayed diagnosis due to different aspects of what we call "Corona-phobia". These cases were easily collec

Effect of chronic disease self-management program on the quality of life of HIV-infected men who have sex with men: An empirical study in Shanghai, China.

OBJECTIVES: The HIV/AIDS epidemic rages on in China, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM). MSM with HIV/AIDS also tend to have poorer quality of life than other members of the population. A major contributor to these issues is the huge gap between the increasing demand of MSM for medical services and the availability of such services; their current needs cannot be met only with the services of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The aim of the present study was to examine the quality of life of MSM with HIV/AIDS in Shanghai, as well as determine whether it is i…

High dose dexamethasone as an alternative rescue therapy for active bleeding in children with chronic ITP: clinical and immunological effects.

High-dose dexamethasone (HD-DXM) is debated as a second-line therapy for chronic Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in children. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of HD-DXM as an emergency therapy in uncontrolled bleeding in children with chronic ITP and to assess its immunological effect on dendritic cells (DCs) percentage and their co-stimulatory markers CD86 and CD83. Totally, 20 children previously diagnosed as chronic ITP were enrolled in this study and all admitted to hospital with uncontrolled bleeding. Patients received HD-DXM as a single daily dose for 4 days. Bl

The cursed duet today: Tuberculosis and HIV-coinfection.

The tuberculosis (TB) and HIV syndemic continues to rage and are a major public health concern worldwide. This deadly association raises complexity and represent a significant barrier towards TB elimination. TB continues to be the leading cause of death amongst HIV-infected people. This paper reports the challenges that lay ahead and outlines some of the current and future strategies that may be able to address this co-epidemic efficiently. Improved diagnostics, cheaper and more effective drugs, shorter treatment regimens for both drug-sensitive and drug-resistant TB are discussed. Also, speci…

Drug abuse: Uncovering the burden in rural Punjab.

INTRODUCTION: Drug abuse is a global phenomenon, affecting almost every country, but its extent and characteristics differ from region to region. India too is caught in this vicious circle of drug abuse, and the numbers of drug addicts are increasing day by day. The bane of drug abuse in Punjab has acquired the proportions of a pestilence that has shaken the entire society in the state. It is observed that in Punjab "drug abuse" is a raging epidemic, especially among the young. METHODOLOGY: The present cross-sectional study was conducted on 400 adolescents and young adults (11-35 years) from

Intra-peritoneal sRAGE treatment induces alterations in cellular distribution of CD19(+), CD3 (+) and Mac-1 (+) cells in lymphoid organs and peritoneal cavity.

Receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) is a pattern recognition receptor that binds a variety of pro-inflammatory ligands. Its soluble form, sRAGE, can compete for ligand binding and thereby have an anti-inflammatory effect. We have recently reported that sRAGE also exerts pro-inflammatory and chemotactic properties suggesting a dual role for sRAGE in immune modulation. Our present aim was to analyse the immunomodulatory properties of sRAGE in vivo with respect to acquired immunity. Naive mice were treated intra-peritoneally with sRAGE and cells from peritoneal lavage, spleens and…

The incidence rates for PA among hypertensives were recently reported to be widely raged between 3.2% and 20%. Those discrepancies are due in part to the completely different characteristics of the starting subjects used for studying the prevalence. Moreover, the criteria for screening PA among hypertensives, including aldosterone-reni …

Three days in October of 1630: detailed examination of mortality during an early modern plague epidemic in Venice.

The epidemiology of medieval and early modern European plague remains highly controversial. It now seems likely that the epidemiology was not uniform throughout either the geographic or temporal boundaries of the plague in Western Europe. The Venetian plague of 1630 was extensively documented; day-by-day records were kept, and each mortality in the city was recorded in a set format. The days 23-25 October 1630, representing a period when mortality was beginning to increase sharply, are examined. In all, 1,163 deaths were recorded. They show a large preponderance of women; a mean age of 28, but

Emotion Regulation in Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Related Interventions: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Maladaptive emotion regulation (ER) and emotion dysregulation (ED) have long been associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as etiological and maintaining factors. Despite building interest in the field along with ancillary research into "rage OCD" (likely an example of ED), targeting the relationship between OCD and ER/ED has been understudied in pediatric OCD populations. The aim of this review was to elucidate the current state of the literature regarding ER/ED, its relationship to pediatric OCD, and related interventions. METHODS: A scoping review examined…
