Behavioral response to diazepam in a residential laboratory.

Two groups of three healthy adult male volunteers without histories of sedative or other drug abuse participated in 15-day residential studies. Each day consisted of a private work period (10 AM to 4:30 PM), during which subjects participated in traditional laboratory performance tasks, and a social period (5 to 11:30 PM), during which subjects had access to recreational activities available under social or private conditions. Tobacco cigarettes and food were available throughout each day (9 AM to 12 PM). Diazepam (5 or 10 mg/70 kg) or placebo was administered orally twice daily in alternating

Cytotoxicity of methamphetamine exposure on Sertoli cells: a pilot study with implications for male infertility.

Methamphetamine (Meth), a psychoactive drug, has been shown to reduce testicular weight and decrease sperm count, indicating its potential role in contributing to male infertility. We therefore assessed Meth's effects (0.1-100 μM) on TM4 Sertoli cell viability, toxicity, and proliferation (trypan blue exclusion assay), mitochondrial activity (MA) (XTT assay), while transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) was used to examine monolayer permeability. The acute study (only 24-hour Meth exposure) mimics recreational users and the chronic study, the Meth addicts who require daily doses (24-96 h

Controlled ovarian stimulation therapy as a potential risk for the development and progression of renal cell carcinomas: A case report and literature review.

Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) is the most common type of cancer in the kidney and is mostly asymptomatic. Previous studies have supported the important role of sex hormones in RCC pathophysiology and that targeted hormone receptor therapy, such as estrogen receptor targeting, is a promising treatment strategy. However, to the best of our knowledge, it remains unknown whether hormonal therapy, such as controlled ovarian stimulation for in vitro fertilization, serves a role in the development and progression of RCC. The present report describes a case of RCC developed after a fertility stimulation

Cannabis and Cannabis Edibles: A Review.

Cannabis is an excellent natural source of fiber and various bioactive cannabinoids. So far, at least 120 cannabinoids have been identified, and more novel cannabinoids are gradually being unveiled by detailed cannabis studies. However, cannabinoids in both natural and isolated forms are especially vulnerable to oxygen, heat, and light. Therefore, a diversity of cannabinoids is associated with their chemical instability to a large extent. The research status of structural conversion of cannabinoids is introduced. On the other hand, the use of drug-type cannabis and the phytocannabinoids thereo

Influence of prenatal environment and birth parameters on amblyopia, strabismus, and anisometropia.

PURPOSE: To report the prevalence of amblyopia, strabismus, and anisometropia in a young adult population at a single center in Australia and to investigate the underlying prenatal and early-life risk factors. METHODS: Participants in the Raine Study have been followed from mid-gestation (n = 2,868 newborns) to young adulthood. At age 20 years, 1,344 participants had a comprehensive eye examination, including visual acuity and a detailed orthoptic assessment. Risk factors were determined from medical records and questionnaires completed by the mothers at 18 weeks' gestation. The main outcome

Skeletal Fluorosis: An Unusual Manifestation of Computer Cleaner Inhalant Abuse.

Skeletal fluorosis is a metabolic bone disease caused by accumulation of fluoride and is generally associated with chronic exposure to fluoride-contaminated groundwater, a phenomenon endemic to developing countries. Whereas elevated water fluoride concentrations do not constitute a public health issue in the United States, emergence of skeletal fluorosis as a sequela of chronic recreational exposures has been described. In this case report, our 33-year-old male patient with a history of major depressive disorder and substance abuse was hospitalized for hyperkalemia and acute kidney injury disc

Diverse roles of metformin during peri-implantation development: revisiting novel molecular mechanisms underlying clinical implications.

Metformin is not only a widely used oral antidiabetic drug, which acts as an insulin sensitizer and suppressor of hepatic gluconeogenesis, but it also exhibits antitumor properties. Besides, it has been utilized in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) for infertile women with glucose intolerance and as a component of combination therapy to reduce early (first trimester) pregnancy loss or spontaneous abortion (SAB). Based on recent studies demonstrating its beneficial effects on mothers and the fetus, metformin is even recommended for later stages of pregnancy. Probing into the mec

Intoxications by the dissociative new psychoactive substances diphenidine and methoxphenidine.

BACKGROUND: Diphenidine (1-(1,2-diphenylethyl)piperidine) and its 2-methoxylated derivative methoxphenidine (MXP, 2-MeO-diphenidine) are substances with dissociative effects that were recently introduced for "recreational" purpose through the online-based sale of new psychoactive substances (NPS). A number of analytically confirmed non-fatal intoxications associated with diphenidine or MXP have occurred in Sweden and were included in the STRIDA project. STUDY DESIGN: Observational case series of consecutive patients with admitted or suspected intake of NPS and requiring intensive treatment in

Effect of Glucocorticoid Receptor Antagonism on Alcohol Self-Administration in Genetically-Selected Marchigian Sardinian Alcohol-Preferring and Non-Preferring Wistar Rats.

Alcoholism is a chronically relapsing disorder characterized by high alcohol intake and a negative emotional state during abstinence, which contributes to excessive drinking and susceptibility to relapse. Stress, dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and alterations in glucocorticoid receptor (GR) function have been linked to transition from recreational consumption to alcohol use disorder (AUD). Here, we investigated the effect of pharmacological antagonisms of GR on alcohol self-administration (SA) using male and female Wistar and Marchigian Sardinian alcohol-preferr
