Two patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) showed tics triggered by external stimuli. This unusual feature is of significance to the aetiology of GTS and in particular the relationship between GTS and the startle response.

One hundred and forty-three healthy unmedicated subjects from a random sample, aged 20-80 years, were examined and cardiovascular autonomic function tests (Valsalva manoeuvre, deep and quiet breathing tests and active orthostatic test) were performed in order to study normal responses to these tests and to determine age-related reference values. Most of the cardiovascular indices reflecting autonomically mediated heart rate responses decline with advancing age and this leads inevitably to the need for age-related reference values. The brain-stem involvement in Friedreich's ataxia (FA) was studied by using brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and the blink reflex. Ten out of 18 patients had abnormal BAEPs, the main abnormality being complete absence of responses and disappearance of wave V. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between spinal cholinergic pressor neurons and a somatosympathetic reflex response in rats. Intrathecal (IT) injection of the cholinesterase inhibitor, neostigmine (NEO), produced marked pressor and tachycardic responses without any changes in respiratory parameters. Four female patients with Sudeck's atrophy (SA) were evaluated at our department. Sera of all patients were investigated for antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi. In all patients elevated IgG antibody titers and in one patient also elevated IgM titer were found. In one patient structures identical with B. burgdorferi could be detected on histological sections from the skin of the affected limb. Our data and those of other authors suggest that a spirochetal infection can be regarded as an important etiopathogenetic factor in the development of SA.

The effect of tilt on the time constant of post-rotatory nystagmus was determined in a group of normal subjects and patients with cerebellar lesions. The normal subjects showed a vestibular response that decayed with a time constant of 19.6 s when upright and 7.2 s after tilt prone. We measured the mean latency of the stapedius reflex by normal listeners. We observed a prolongation of the latency by patients with operative and histological confirmed neurinoma of the VIII. nerve. Acoustic reflex thresholds, latencies and magnitudes were recorded binaurally in decerebrate chinchillas suffering monaural, temporary noise trauma. We report 2 patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSDS) associated with renal tubular osteomalacia. In both patients, RSDS was the presenting manifestation. Treatment of the underlying condition with calcitriol resulted in healing in both patients. These cases prompted us to undertake a retrospective study of 24 consecutive patients with osteomalacia (6 of renal tubular origin, 18 related to vitamin D deficiency), and of 259 consecutive patients with RSDS. Studies were conducted to compare the first-breath responses of medullary Dorsal and Ventral Respiratory Group inspiratory (I) neurons to the mechanical loading (tracheal occlusion, TO) of inspiration in unanesthetized (decerebrate) and anesthetized (Dial) vagotomized cats, and to determine the sources of the sensory activity causing the changes in I-neuron activity. In 100 consecutive cases with severe noise-induced hearing loss, pure-tone threshold measurements revealed symmetric hearing losses with maximum shifts at 4000 and 6000 Hz. We employed simultaneous measurement of the crossed and uncrossed acoustic reflex (AR) and a signal-averaging technique to evaluate supra-threshold amplitude characteristics of the AR. By evaluating AR amplitude relationships in a mathematical model based on known afferent, efferent, and central pathway effects, we are able to compare results from a variety of patients and to make meaningful diagnostic interpretations.
