Long-term effects of vestibular compensation on balance control and sensory organisation after unilateral deafferentation due to vestibular schwannoma surgery.

The time-course of central adaptive mechanisms after vestibular schwannoma surgical removal allows, 3 months after surgery (middle term), a satisfactory recovery of balance control. However, the long-term evolution of postural control beyond the end of usual medical follow-up remains unknown. This longitudinal prospective study aimed to assess the long-term effects of vestibular compensation on balance control and sensory organisation in patients operated on for vestibular schwannoma. Thirty-six patients with vestibular schwannoma underwent vestibular and sensory organisation tests, shortly be

Interoceptive threat leads to defensive mobilization in highly anxiety sensitive persons.

To study defensive mobilization elicited by the exposure to interoceptive arousal sensations, we exposed highly anxiety sensitive students to a symptom provocation task. Symptom reports, autonomic arousal, and the startle eyeblink response were monitored during guided hyperventilation and a recovery period in 26 highly anxiety sensitive persons and 22 controls. Normoventilation was used as a non-provocative comparison condition. Hyperventilation led to autonomic arousal and a marked increase in somatic symptoms. While high and low anxiety sensitive persons did not differ in their defensive act

The contribution of otoneurological evaluation to tinnitus diagnosis.

Tinnitus has been reported for nearly 80% of patients referred to the otolaryngology services. Usually, its evaluation is based on tonal and vocal audiometry, tympanometry, brainstem-evoked potentials, electrocochleography, and otoacoustic emissions. However, as the cochleovestibular system works as a unit, the use of vestibular tests has been proposed to evaluate tinnitus. Many patients with tinnitus have altered vestibular test results even in the absence of vestibular symptoms. This finding accounts for the indication of complete vestibular and audiological evaluation of tinnitus. The aim o

Anti-inflammatory treatment with acetylsalicylate or rofecoxib is not neuroprotective in Huntington's disease transgenic mice.

Inflammatory mechanisms have been implicated in the pathogenesis of Huntington's disease (HD). Possible benefits of anti-inflammatory treatments include improved folding of mutant huntingtin mediated through chaperones, reduction of destructive cellular and humoral inflammatory pathways, and reduction of proapoptotic signaling mediated by NF-kappaB or other transcription factors. This study was performed to investigate the therapeutic potential of anti-inflammatory drugs as treatments for Huntington's disease by examining whether two compounds in widespread human use can ameliorate the phenoty

Thyroxine replacement attenuates hypothyroxinemia, hearing loss, and motor deficits following developmental exposure to Aroclor 1254 in rats.

The nervous system is dependent upon thyroid hormones for normal development, and we previously reported that developmental Aroclor 1254 (A1254) exposure caused hypothyroxinemia, hearing loss and other behavioral changes in rats. (Goldey et al., 1995a; Herr et al., 1996). The hypothesis that A1254-induced hypothyroxinemia may have contributed to the observed functional changes was tested in primiparous Long-Evans rats given daily oral doses of corn oil (control) or 8 mg/kg of Aroclor 1254 from gestation day (GD) 6 through postnatal day (PND) 21. In addition, from PND 4 to PND 21, all pups in o

Enhanced neurotoxicity of 3,3'-iminodipropionitrile following carbon tetrachloride pretreatment in the rat.

The consequences of 3,3'-iminodipropionitrile (IDPN) exposure in animals merits attention both because of its unique neurotoxic effects and as a potential model compound of human dyskinetic disorders. An important question that remains to be determined is whether IDPN itself or a putative active metabolite is responsible for the neurotoxic actions of the chemical in vivo. The present work tested the hypothesis that IDPN must be metabolized by the liver to an active metabolite to become neurotoxic. Thus a reduction in IDPN neurotoxicity would be expected when liver function is compromised. Male

Altered Auditory Maturation in Fragile X Syndrome and Its Involvement in Audiogenic Seizure Susceptibility.

Auditory hypersensitivity is a prominent symptom in Fragile X syndrome (FXS), the most prevalent monogenic cause of autism and intellectual disability. FXS arises through the loss of the protein encoded by the FMR1 (Fragile X Messenger Ribonucleoprotein 1) gene, FMRP, required for normal neural circuit excitability. In the brainstem, FMRP is necessary for normal development of acoustic reactivity, and its loss has been implicated in audiogenic seizures (AGS) in Fmr1 knockout (KO) mice, modeling auditory hypersensitivity and seizures in FXS patients. The present study investigated the correlati

Associations between physiological indicators of cochlear deafferentation and listening effort in military Veterans with normal audiograms.

Cochlear synaptopathy, a type of cochlear deafferentation that impacts the synapses between the inner hair cells and the afferent auditory nerve fibers, is predicted to result in speech perception in noise difficulty. However, this has been difficult to confirm due to mixed findings in human studies of the relationship between speech perception in noise and physiological indicators of deafferentation (auditory brainstem response [ABR] wave I amplitude, envelope following response [EFR] magnitude, and middle ear muscle reflex [MEMR] magnitude). One possible explanation for the mixed findings is

Protective effects of Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761 against noise trauma-induced hearing loss and tinnitus development.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and resulting comorbidities like subjective tinnitus are common diseases in modern societies. A substance shown to be effective against NIHL in an animal model is the Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761. Further effects of the extract on the cellular and systemic levels of the nervous system make it a promising candidate not only for protection against NIHL but also for its secondary comorbidities like tinnitus. Following an earlier study we here tested the potential effectiveness of prophylactic EGb 761 treatment against NIHL and tinnitus development in the Mongoli

TEOAE suppression in adults with learning disabilities.

The presentation of contralateral noise during the recording of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) reduces the amplitude of the TEOAE in normally-hearing adults. This is known as TEOAE suppression. The present study investigated TEOAE suppression in 18 adults with learning disabilities (LDs) compared to 18 adults without LDs. TEOAEs were elicited by 60 dB p.e. SPL clicks and were suppressed by the presentation of 60 dB SPL contralateral broadband noise. Suppression was measured as a change in the overall TEOAE response amplitude, and also analysed in 2-ms epochs representing diffe

Sensorimotor gating in manic and mixed episode bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Few studies have examined acoustic startle sensorimotor gating in bipolar disorder (BPD) despite the fact that patients with BPD have exhibited inhibitory dysfunctions on a variety of early information processing tasks. The present study aimed to expand the current literature through the investigation of electromyographic (EMG) measures of acoustic startle prepulse inhibition (PPI) in manic and mixed episode BPD. METHODS: Fourteen manic and 21 mixed episode BPD patients were compared to 32 healthy controls on acoustic startle measures of PPI using a 120-ms lead interval. RESULTS:

Prenatal amphetamine exposure alters behavioral reactivity to amphetamine in rats.

In utero exposure to psychostimulants produces neurobehavioral alterations in the offspring of laboratory animals. Most amphetamine-related behavioral changes have been related to changes in the monoamine transmission levels, where monoamines may act as developmental regulatory substances for maturation of neuronal population. This study investigates the effect of prenatal-amphetamine exposure on the offspring's behavioral responses under amphetamine conditioning settings. Pregnant female rats were injected (subcutaneous) with amphetamine or saline during the pregnancy [gestation day (GD) 8 un

Pharmacological and neuroethological studies of three antiepileptic drugs in the Genetic Audiogenic Seizure Hamster (GASH:Sal).

Epilepsy modeling is essential for understanding the basic mechanisms of the epileptic process. The Genetic Audiogenic Seizure Hamster (GASH:Sal) exhibits generalized tonic-clonic seizures of genetic origin in response to sound stimulation and is currently being validated as a reliable model of epilepsy. Here, we performed a pharmacological and neuroethological study using well-known and widely used antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), including phenobarbital (PB), valproic acid (VPA), and levetiracetam (LEV). The intraperitoneal administration of PB (5-20mg/kg) and VPA (100-300mg/kg) produced a dose-d

Lower prepulse inhibition in children with the 22q11 deletion syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The 22q11 deletion syndrome is associated with a range of possible physical anomalies, probable ongoing learning disabilities, and a specific constellation of neuropsychological deficits, including impairments in selective and executive visual attention, working memory, and sensorimotor functioning. It has been estimated that 25% of the children with 22q11 deletion syndrome go on to develop schizophrenia in late adolescence or adulthood. This is of urgent concern. Specification of early brain network vulnerabilities may provide a basis for early intervention while indicating critica

Clinical study of a digital vs an analogue hearing aid.

Digital signal processing in hearing instruments has brought new perspectives to the compensation of hearing impairment and may result in alleviation of the adverse effects of hearing problems. This study compares a commercially available digital signal processing hearing aid (HA) (Senso) with a modern analogue HA with programmable fitting (Logo). The HAs tested are identical in appearance and, in spite of a different mode of operation, the study design ensured blinding of the test subjects. Outcome parameters were: improvements in speech recognition score in noise (deltaSRSN) with the HAs; ov

Kainic acid lesions in adult rats as a model of schizophrenia: changes in auditory information processing.

Previous studies have suggested that intracerebroventricular kainic acid injections alter brain anatomy and neurochemistry in a manner similar to what is observed in schizophrenic patients. Disturbances in sensory information processing are one of the major symptoms of schizophrenia. Thus, the present experiments were designed to evaluate the hypothesis that hippocampal damage, induced by administration of kainic acid, would alter the processing of auditory stimuli in a paired-click paradigm. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted for surface recording of auditory evoked potentials. At

[Experiences in Kiel with the cochlear implant].

Since 1988 22 deaf patients were provided with a 22-channel cochlear implant at the Kiel University Hospital. No surgical or postoperative complications were seen in any of the patients. Side effects like facial stimulation and pain sensation during electrode activation do not reduce the utility. Tinnitus may initially be severe but usually subsides to preop levels after a few days. A tinnitus masking effect is pronounced during stimulation but hardly lasts long after switch off. Besides an individually arranged hearing training the accurate speech processor fitting to the needs of the patient

Neuropathic and cerebrovascular correlates of hearing loss in Fabry disease.

Fabry disease, OMIM 301500, is a progressive multisystem storage disorder due to the deficiency of alpha-galactosidase A (GALA). Neurological and vascular manifestations of this disorder with regard to hearing loss have not been analysed quantitatively in large cohorts. We conducted a retrospective cross sectional analysis of hearing loss in 109 male and female patients with Fabry disease who were referred to and seen at the Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA on natural history and enzyme replacement study protocols. There were 85 males aged 6-58 years (mea
