Neonatal overfeeding alters adult anxiety and stress responsiveness.

The neonatal nutritional environment is critical for programming the systems regulating body weight, and an inappropriate nutritional environment in early life can lead to overweight or obesity later on. In this study we demonstrate that changes to the neonatal nutritional environment, induced by changing the litter size in which the animal is raised, can alter not only body weight into adulthood, but also anxiety behaviours and stress responsiveness. These effects appear to be somewhat sex-dependent, affecting female rats more strongly than males. Thus, Wistar rats raised in small litters, wh

Predicting which patient will fall again ... and again.

In order to compare the characteristics, preventive interventions and outcomes of single and multiple fallers, a retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in a 680-bed acute-care hospital in Western Australia. Fifty patients falling more than once (multiple fallers) were randomly selected from all patients reported to have fallen between 1 July 1989 and 31 December 1989, and age-sex matched with 50 patients falling once in the trial period (single fallers). In total, 382 in-patients were reported to have sustained 578 falls in the 6-month trial period. Fifty-two per cent of these falls

Critical Care Aggression and Violence Events (CAVE) Against Nurses in the ICU: Epidemiology and Risk Factors for Recurrence.

OBJECTIVES: To quantify and characterize aggression and violence against nurses, identify associated clinical characteristics, evaluate measures in response, and explore predictors of recurrent incidents in the ICU. DESIGN: Retrospective single-center study. Incidence and characteristics of aggression and violence against ICU nurses were the primary outcomes. Aggression was defined as hostile behavior or resistance to care without intent to harm. Violence comprised verbal, physical, or sexual acts to threaten or inflict harm. Secondary outcomes included risk factors for recurrent incidents, d

How eating behaviours associate to body composition in European adolescents: a cross-sectional analysis from the HELENA study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a key developmental stage marked by physiological and behavioural changes. Eating behaviour, modifiable and sex-dependent, may be altered and linked to future health issues. This cross-sectional study aims to assess whether eating behaviours and body composition are associated in an adolescent sample. METHODS: Participants aged 12.5-17.5 years were recruited from 10 European cities, with valid data on age, sex, socio-demographic status, body composition and physical activity and who had also completed the specific eating behaviour questionnaire "Eating Behaviour and

Ocular infrared thermography combined with stacked ensemble machine learning enables contact-free rectal temperature prediction in Murrah buffaloes.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate core body temperature monitoring is central to health assessment in buffaloes, yet conventional rectal thermometry demands physical restraint and direct animal contact, causing stress to animals and posing injury risk to handlers. METHODS: This study developed and validated a contact-free prediction framework combining ocular infrared thermography with stacked ensemble machine learning, using medial canthus temperatures of both eyes alongside environmental variables as predictors of rectal temperature in 471 adult female Murrah buffaloes. Normalisation parameters were d

Attitudes toward advance care planning among people with dementia at different stages of the disease: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Although advance care planning improves end-of-life care, participation is low. For dementia, attitudes must be studied by disease stage to capture changes and better understand patient engagement. PURPOSE: To explore how people with mild-to-moderate dementia described their attitudes toward advance care planning following diagnosis, during disease progression, and when anticipating advanced dementia and end-of-life circumstances. METHODS: This qualitative study used maximum variation purposive sampling to recruit 18 people with dementia from the neurology department of a tertiar

Lung cancer through patients' lived experiences: A sociocultural perspective.

OBJECTIVE: Lung cancer stigma remains a significant yet underexplored challenge, particularly in non-Western contexts. Our study aimed to explore how sociocultural factors shape the experiences of Malaysian lung cancer patients, with particular attention to stigma. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with 15 lung cancer patients at a local public hospital in Malaysia, which were analysed using coding reliability thematic analysis in conjunction with consensual qualitative research. RESULTS: Our analysis showed that participants' narratives centred on th

Machine learning-based prediction of delirium in older patients with chronic kidney disease requiring intensive care: A hospital-based retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Delirium is a common complication in intensive care units (ICUs), especially among older adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD). It is associated with increased mortality and prolonged hospitalization. Machine learning (ML)-based models can help predict delirium. In this study, we developed an ML-based delirium prediction model for critically ill older patients with CKD. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients aged ≥65 years admitted to the ICU between January 2021 and November 2023. Delirium was assessed every 8 h throughout the ICU stay using the Intensive C

Transcriptional imprints of prenatal stress: sex- and time-specific signatures in early neurodevelopment.

Prenatal stress (PNS) is a well-established animal model of foetal exposure to maternal stress and related psychiatric disorders. While its biological and behavioural effects on the offspring have been widely studied in adolescence and adulthood, early-life signatures remain largely unexplored. Here, we assessed whole-genome transcriptomic changes by RNA-sequencing, followed by pathway analyses, in hippocampi collected at postnatal day (PND)2 and PND14 from male and female rats exposed to PNS by physical maternal restraint, compared with non-stressed counterparts (n = 6 per group). We first an

Incidence of cough reflex and vagal response among various pulsed field ablation systems: a multicenter registry study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cough reflex and vagal reflex-induced bradycardia are important to predict and prevent prior to PFA to ensure procedural safety and efficacy. However, no studies have yet investigated differences in their incidence among the various PFA systems. We aimed to evaluate the incidence, predictors, and system-specific differences of cough reflex and vagal response during PFA in a large multicenter cohort. METHODS: Data from 1715 patients undergoing PFA using either PulseSelect, Farapulse, or Varipulse systems at 13 centers were analyzed. Cough reflex was defined as any episode

Serum biochemistry and haematology in wild and captive bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus) from Svalbard, Norway.

BACKGROUND: Health assessment of seals in captivity include haematology and serum biochemistry measurements. Because such parameters differ between species, it is crucial to have species-specific reference values for the interpretation of clinical samples. Furthermore, differences in nutrition and environment, life cycles as well as seasonal/annual cycles and varying physiological conditions can potentially affect serum chemistry and haematology parameters. Blood samples from four captive adult bearded seals (initially caught as pups in Svalbard, Norway, now held at Polaria, an Arctic experien

A naturalistic, long-term follow-up of purging disorder.

BACKGROUND: The DSM-5 introduced purging disorder (PD) as an other specified feeding or eating disorder characterized by recurrent purging in the absence of binge eating. The current study sought to describe the long-term outcome of PD and to examine predictors of outcome. METHODS: Women (N = 84) who met research criteria for PD completed a comprehensive battery of baseline interview and questionnaire assessments. At an average of 10.24 (3.81) years follow-up, available records indicated all women were living, and over 95% were successfully located (n = 80) while over two-thirds (n = 58) comp

Intractable Postoperative Wounds Caused by Self-Inflicted Trauma in a Patient with Cutaneous Munchausen Syndrome Presenting as a Pyoderma Gangrenosum-Like Lesion.

A 50-year-old Japanese woman consulted the emergency department of our hospital for bleeding due to an intractable postoperative wound on the lower abdomen; the postoperative wound was owing to a laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed 1 year previously for acute cholecystitis. She presented with a painful ulcer on her right lower abdomen. She also presented with multiple scars, skin grafts on the extremities, and a missing left lower leg, the causes for all of which were unexplained. The results of her blood test were normal, except for the hemoglobin level. Histology of the skin biopsy specim

Social neuroscience, empathy, brain integration, and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Paul MacLean has investigated integrated brain functioning through selected brain lesions in animals that disturb circuits necessary for complex behaviors, such as social displays. MacLean is unique in his comparative neurobehavioral approach that emphasizes the evolutionary origins of parenting and social behaviors and the implications of brain changes in the evolution from reptiles (social displays) to mammals (nursing, audiovocal communication, play) to man (self-awareness, intentionality, social context) that link affect and cognition. Subjectively, how "looking with feeling toward others,

Primary prevention of sudden cardiac death of the young athlete: the controversy about the screening electrocardiogram and its innovative artificial intelligence solution.

The preparticipation screening for athlete participation in sports typically entails a comprehensive medical and family history and a complete physical examination. A 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) can increase the likelihood of detecting cardiac diagnoses such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, but this diagnostic test as part of the screening process has engendered considerable controversy. The pro position is supported by argument that international screening protocols support its use, positive diagnosis has multiple benefits, history and physical examination are inadequate, primary preventio
