Combined treatment for Coats' disease: retinal laser photocoagulation combined with intravitreal bevacizumab injection was effective in two cases.

BACKGROUND: The exact pathogenetic mechanisms of Coats' disease remain unknown. In this report, we show two cases of Coats' disease that achieved a favorable prognosis with the combined treatment of intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) injection prior to photocoagulation, although both initially resisted photocoagulation therapy. CASE PRESENTATIONS: Case 1 was a 15-year-old boy with initial visual acuity of 0.4 OD. At the temporal retina, aneurysms and abnormal telangiectatic vessels were observed. Hard exudates and an exudative retinal detachment extended to the fovea. He was diagnosed as having C

Comparative Doppler imaging of the ophthalmic vasculature in normal Beagles and Beagles with inherited primary open-angle glaucoma.

The objective of this study was to compare orbital and ocular vasculature velocity, measured by Doppler imaging, in normal Beagles and Beagles with inherited primary open-angle glaucoma. Eight normal Beagles and 13 Beagles with different stages of primary open-angle glaucoma were evaluated twice with a 2-4-week period between measurements. Doppler imaging was performed with the dogs anesthetized, and the Doppler transducer applied directly on the corneal surface. The majority of the orbital vasculature (external ethmoidal artery; internal ophthalmic artery and vein; and external ophthalmic art

Central retinal microvasculature damage is associated with orthostatic hypotension in Parkinson's disease.

Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is a common non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD). OH can cause cerebral and retinal hypoperfusion and is associated with microvascular damage in PD. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a non-invasive technology that can be used to visualize the retinal microvasculature and detect microvascular damage in PD. In the present study, 51 PD patients (OH+, n = 20, 37 eyes; OH-, n = 32, 61 eyes) and 51 healthy controls (100 eyes) were evaluated. The Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale III, Hoehn and Yahr scale, Montreal Cognitive Assessment, le

Reproducibility of the retinal vascular response to flicker light in Asians.

PURPOSE: Dilation of retinal vessels in response to diffuse luminance flicker may reflect endothelial function. Although this has previously been shown to be reproducible in whites, there have been no similar data in Asians. We assess the reproducibility of repeated measurements of this response in Asians. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Healthy Asians (n = 33) with normal vision and no history of glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, cataract, or retinal arterial/venous occlusion participated in this study. Repeated measures from the same subjects were taken 30-60 min apart using the Dynamic Ves…

Primary peripheral retinal nonperfusion in a family with Loeys-Dietz syndrome.

Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS) is a connective tissue disorder associated with aggressive arterial aneurysms; rarely, it can have clinical features similar to those of Marfan syndrome, with retinal detachment, myopia, and ectopia lentis. A 19-month-old boy with history of LDS was found to have peripheral retinal nonperfusion in both eyes and a combined traction and exudative retinal detachment of the left eye. Ocular findings in the father, who also had LDS, were normal, but the patient's 34-month-old sister with LDS was also found to have less extensive peripheral retinal nonperfusion. To our kno

Gene deletion and pharmacological inhibition of aldose reductase protect against retinal ischemic injury.

Retinal ischemic injury is common in patients with diabetes, atherosclerosis, hypertension, transient ischemia attack and amaurosis fugax. Previously, signs of ischemic stress, such as pericyte loss, blood-retinal barrier breakdown and neovascularization, which can lead to occlusion of retinal vessels, have been prevented in diabetic db/db mice with aldose reductase (AR) null mutation. To determine the role in retinal ischemic injury of AR and sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH), the first and second enzymes in the polyol pathway, mice with deletion of AR (AR(-/-)) or SDH-mutation (SDH(-/-)), or C57B…
