Further studies on leptospirosis in small rodents and shrews in Finland. A report of investigation made in 1963-64.

In previous investigations on small mammals in Finland (Rislakki & al 1954, Rislakki & Salminen 1955, Salminen 1956), the Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae-frequency in rats (Rattus norvegicus) was rather high (43.1 %). Leptospira-positive cases were also found in house mice (L. sejroe 23.3 %), harvest mice (L. hataviae 9.0 %), yellow necked field mice (L. poi 12.5 %), common voles (L. sejroe and L. bataviae together 12.1 %), field voles (L. sejroe and L. bataviae together 10.7 %) and in common shrews (L. poi 1.2 %). Specimens of other species sent in for investigation (Norway rat, common red bac

The autecology of small rodents and insectivores of the Tribec mountain range.

Small rodents and insectivores have become the main reservoirs of tick-borne encephalitis virus. In order, therefore, to demonstrate the dynamic and structural changes occurring in a natural focus of tick-borne encephalitis, information has been collected on the distribution, habitat, life-cycle, population density and extent of tick infestation of the rodents and insectivores that inhabit the Tribec region and adjacent parts of the Hronský Inovec Mountains. The following mammals are discussed: Sciurus vulgaris, Citellus citellus, Glis glis, Muscardinus avellanarius, Mus musculus, Micromys min

The role of small rodents and hedgehogs in a natural focus of tick-borne encephalitis.

The role of small rodents and hedgehogs in the circulation of tick-borne encephalitis in natural foci in the Tribec region of Czechoslovakia has been studied. Isolation of virus from the blood of Apodemus flavicollis, Clethrionomys glareolus and Erinaceus roumanicus, as well as the demonstration of antibodies in the sera of these mammals and of A. sylvaticus, Microtus arvalis and Sciurus vulgaris, showed that these mammals had been in contact with the virus in recent years. The proportion of positive sera was low, ranging from 4% to 11% for A. flavicollis in various parts of the Tribec region.

Wǔhàn sharpbelly bornavirus infects and persists in cypriniform cells.

Our recent study using in silico data mining identified novel culterviruses (family: Bornaviridae) in fish, including a variant of Wuhan sha … nd Spariformes), reptiles (Testudines and Squamata), birds (Galliformes), and mammals (Primates and Rodentia). WhSBV showed efficient replication and a time-dependent increase in viral RNA levels in cypriniform cells, whereas replication was limited, confined to single cells, and lacked a clear time-dependent increase in cells from other bony fish and rept …

Cell type and cell signaling innovations underlying mammalian pregnancy.

Virtual endocast of the early Oligocene Cedromus wilsoni (Cedromurinae) and brain evolution in squirrels.

Extant squirrels exhibit extensive variation in brain size and shape, but published endocranial data for living squirrels are limited, and n … urid rodents in relation to other factors than arboreality. Despite the fact that both Primates and Rodentia exhibit neocortical expansion through time, since the adoption of arboreality preceded major increases in the neocortex in Primates, those neurological changes may be related to different ecological factors, underlining the complexity of the inter-r …

The great variety of rodent taphonomy: A series of case studies.

Rodents as postmortem taphonomic agents in the forensic context can affect various analyses such as trauma interpretation, identification, or the recovery rate. While carnivore scavenging has been studied extensively due to its destructive nature, the potential of rodents to alter human remains is comparatively underrepresented in the literature, despite common involvement. We present thirteen cases of rodent taphonomy including exposed, buried and indoor-located remains. The rodents in these cases scavenged on soft and hard tissue, dispersed skeletal elements or associated objects, and/or use

Past genomes guide future conservation: insights from extinct populations of the endangered Pacific pocket mouse.

Efforts to recover endangered species often rely on restoring populations to their historical range, yet reestablishing lost genetic variation is challenging when the ancestral genetic landscape is poorly understood. The Pacific pocket mouse (Perognathus longimembris pacificus), a federally endangered heteromyid rodent, has been extirpated from most of its range in coastal southern California. Recovery efforts call for establishing new populations in their historic range through translocation, but the extent to which historical patterns of genetic variation can be recapitulated is unknown. To

Prevalence of Giardia in Nine Species of Wild Rodents in Guangxi, Hunan, and Yunan Provinces, China.

Giardia, a flagellated protozoan, is widely distributed in wild rodents. To characterize the presence of Giardia in wild rodents in southern China, this study collected 344 fecal samples from wild rodents in Guangxi, Hunan, and Yunnan provinces. The β-giardin gene (bg) was amplified to identify the presence of Giardia sp. The results showed that 48 samples (13.95%, 48/344) tested positive for Giardia, including three positives for G. duodenalis (assemblage G n = 1, assemblage F n = 2) and 45 positives for G. microti. Among these, Microtus fortis had the highest prevalence at 30.22% (42/139), f

Analysis of spatial distribution and host selection characteristics of ticks parasitizing rodents in China.

Ticks are widely distributed on animals, especially rodents, and transmit various pathogens that threaten human health. This study systematically analyzed the geographical distribution, host selection patterns, and ecological diversity of rodent-associated ticks across China. We retrieved literature from major Chinese and English databases (up to February 2025) to construct a three-dimensional data matrix linking ticks, rodent hosts, and provincial-level administrative divisions (PLADs). We then analyzed geographical distribution and host selection using key ecological metrics, including speci

A fractional-order analysis of recurrent Lassa fever transmission in Nigeria.

The recurrence of Lassa fever in Nigeria is sustained by human, hospital, rodent, and environmental routes. However, many existing models do not simultaneously capture asymptomatic infection, nosocomial spread, imperfect isolation, and epidemiological memory. This study develops a Caputo fractional-order model that integrates these mechanisms within a single system. The model is shown to admit a unique, non-negative, bounded solution in a positively invariant feasible region. The human-environment reproduction threshold is derived using the next-generation matrix method, while the rodent subsy

Prevalence and Genetic Diversity of Zoonotic Leptospira and Hantavirus in Rodents, Lanxi City, 2023-2025.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis (caused by Leptospira, a bacterium) and hantavirus disease (caused by hantavirus, a virus) are important zoonoses with rodents as main reservoirs. In this study, we investigated the prevalence and genetic diversity of Leptospira and hantavirus in rodents from rural Lanxi City, Zhejiang Province. Rodents showed a higher Leptospira carriage rate than the national average. All hantavirus isolates were Seoul virus (SEOV) and displayed high genetic divergence from vaccine strains. Notably, a unique local phylogenetic cluster of Leptospira borgpetersenii was identified, ind

Detection and genetic diversity of Neoehrlichia mikurensis in rodents from central and southern Shanxi, China.

Neoehrlichia mikurensis is vector-borne gram-negative intracellular bacteria that has a wide range of hosts, and are recognized as emerging human pathogens. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and genetic characteristics of N. mikurensis infections in rodents from central and southern of Shanxi Province, China. The rodents were captured, and the liver, spleen and kidney were collected for N. mikurensis detection and identification by 16 S rRNA and groEL genes sequencing. N. mikurensis was detected in Apodemus agrarius from Yangquan and Eothenomys inez from Yuncheng, with a positivit
