Building the Evidence on Preventing Youth Commercial Sexual Exploitation: A Nonrandomized, Quasi-experimental Evaluation of the Not a Number Trafficking Prevention Program.

Few evaluations have been conducted of trafficking and educational programs aimed at reducing commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) and trafficking of youth, despite the growing implementation of these programs across the United States. The current study uses a quasi-experimental design to evaluate the Not a Number (NAN) trafficking prevention program in two high schools in Houston, TX (N = 449). In both high schools, changes were measured through preprogram and postprogram surveys (approximately 2 months postprogram delivery) for students receiving NAN during health class (implementation group

Expanding the limits of bibliotherapy for panic disorder: randomized trial of self-help without support but with a clear deadline.

Cognitive behavioral bibliotherapy for panic disorder has been found to be less effective without therapist support. In this study, participants were randomized to either unassisted bibliotherapy (n=20) with a scheduled follow-up telephone interview or to a waiting list control group (n=19). Following a structured psychiatric interview, participants in the treatment group were sent a self-help book consisting of 10 chapters based on cognitive behavioral strategies for the treatment of panic disorder. No therapist contact of any kind was provided during the treatment phase, which lasted for 10

Making an educational diagnosis to improve patient education.

The health professional needs to make an educational diagnosis before he selects a specific approach to patient education. Tailoring a patient education program to the patient's belief regarding his health and the patient's expectations regarding his diagnosis and care is useful. Other factors that influence the pulmonary rehabilitation team's selection of educational methodology are the patient's age, sex, educational level, cultural background, and prior experience with his disease. An educational program oriented to patients who rely on self-motivation or self-reward should provide choice o

How the stigma of low literacy can impair patient-professional spoken interactions and affect health: insights from a qualitative investigation.

BACKGROUND: Low literacy is a significant problem across the developed world. A considerable body of research has reported associations between low literacy and less appropriate access to healthcare services, lower likelihood of self-managing health conditions well, and poorer health outcomes. There is a need to explore the previously neglected perspectives of people with low literacy to help explain how low literacy can lead to poor health, and to consider how to improve the ability of health services to meet their needs. METHODS: Two stage qualitative study. In-depth individual interviews f

Effectiveness of a web-based physical activity intervention in patients with knee and/or hip osteoarthritis: randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with knee and/or hip osteoarthritis (OA) are less physically active than the general population, while the benefits of physical activity (PA) have been well documented. Based on the behavioral graded activity treatment, we developed a Web-based intervention to improve PA levels in patients with knee and/or hip OA, entitled "Join2move". The Join2move intervention is a self-paced 9-week PA program in which the patient's favorite recreational activity is gradually increased in a time-contingent way. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate whether a fully automated

[The efficacy of outpatient client-centered psychotherapy for bulimia nervosa: results of a randomised controlled trial].

The efficacy of outpatient client-centered psychotherapy (CCP) for bulimia nervosa was investigated using guided self help (GSH) as comparison group. In the initial CCP-group ( N=29), 27,6% still met the diagnostic criteria at end of treatment and 34,5% at follow-up. In the completer sample ( N=25), 16% met the diagnostic criteria at end of treatment and 0% at follow-up; significant improvements in eating behaviour, comorbid and general psychopathology could be demonstrated which persisted over the follow-up period and which, in part, were significantly superior to the improvements in the GSH-

Development and validation of an interprofessional collaborative educational module on the self-management of foot for individuals with type II diabetes mellitus in India.

BACKGROUND: Insufficient awareness of foot self-care among diabetic individuals results in diabetic foot ulcers especially in the Indian population considering its varied ethnicity and lifestyle practices. The management of diabetes and diabetic foot ulcers therefore demands a well-coordinated approach that involves multiple healthcare providers (HCPs). The present study aims to develop and validate an interprofessional collaborative (IPC) educational program involving HCPs to efficiently oversee and instruct the public on appropriate strategies for self-managing diabetic foot health in the In

"Barefoot on the Rocks": Addressing Shame and Guilt in a Woman Suffering From Borderline Personality Disorder With Combined Individual and Group Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy.

Guilt and shame can be very relevant when treating personality disorders. Understanding how they block the patients' capacity to figure out they can fulfill their wishes is central for a fine-grained case formulation, and for counteracting their contribution to symptom and goal fulfillment. To this purpose we will describe how Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy, delivered in a combined individual and an open-group format, addressed pathological emotions of shame and guilt in the case of Martina, a woman suffering from Borderline PD with avoidant and dependent traits. We show how the therapist

User Engagement With a Mobile Health App for People Living With HIV: Observational Study Based on an Engagement Evaluation Framework.

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) interventions can be effective for people living with HIV, who are sensitive to privacy breach risks. Understanding the perceived experiences of intervention participants can provide comprehensive insights into potential users and predict intervention effectiveness. Thus, it is necessary to plan engagement measurement and consider ways to enhance engagement during the app development phase. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate engagement with a mHealth app using the engagement index and time and to examine differences in engagement according to participan

Physical Couple and Family Violence Among Clients Seeking Therapy: Identifiers and Predictors.

INTRODUCTION: Couple violence (CV) affects many, and the consequences of those actions are grave, not only for the individual suffering at the hand of the perpetrator but also for the other persons in the family. Violence often happens among more than just the adults within one family. Even if CV has been thoroughly investigated in the general population very few studies have investigated this objective on a clinical sample, and none of these have included family violence. AIM: This article identifies and describes the group of clients that have issues of physical couple and family violence.

Psychotropic Drugs for Older Adults With Psychiatric Disorders Presenting to the Emergency Department: Prescription Patterns and Treatment Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: A high proportion of patients presenting to Emergency Departments (EDs) consists of vulnerable elderly people. Mental illnesses are frequently related to advancing age, with difficult to detect symptoms. The aim of this study was to investigate psychiatric drug use by geriatric patients in an ED for whom a psychiatric consultation was needed, according to their psychopathology and severity of outcome. METHODS: During 2014 to 2023, 342 aged patients (35.96% men and 64.04% women; median age = 73 years, range 68-79 years) sought help at the ED of our hospital and required psychiatric
