Reference is made to a clinical and rehabilitative overview of 362 aphasic subjects, namely 221 males (61.05%) and 141 females (38.95%), treated over the last ten years. Of these, 36 males and 23 females (16.29%) had died. Only 19.8% were in a worse condition at follow-up, whereas the condition of the remainder was good and fair in 42% and 38.2% respectively. 79,6% lived with their families following rehabilitation. Where admission to an institution had taken place, this was always the result of socioeconomic conditions rather than clinical and functional problems. Medical management was nearl

Cochlear implantation (CI) is a well-established intervention for improving auditory and speech development in children with severe-to-profound hearing loss. Nonetheless, postoperative rehabilitation outcomes exhibit substantial individual variability. This review synthesizes contemporary evidence on predictors of rehabilitation success following pediatric CI. A robust set of general factors is consistently linked to more favorable outcomes, including earlier age at implantation (with particular benefit within the first year of life), stronger preoperative receptive language skills and speech

BACKGROUND: In this paper the dichotic tests and the CERA (Cortical Evoked Response Audiometry) of children with dyslexia had been examined, in order to find out if there are auditory processing and perception disorders.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 33 children with dyslexia had been compared with 28 children without problems of writing and reading. The mean age of the children was 9 years. All of the children had been examined by the following audiometric measurements: tympanometry, pure-tone-audiometry, speech-audiometry, dichotic Tests by Uttenweiler and Feldmann and the Cortical Evoked Response

Out of a total of 113 consecutive tracheoesophageal (TE) shunt operations for postlaryngectomy voice restoration in the past 8 years performed at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, 92 patients (81%) succeeded in the postoperative TE speech. The essential part of this surgery consists of the construction of the TE shunt using the membraneous part of the trachea obtained at surgery. In the course of 8 years, important changes have been employed for the prevention of aspiration. We attempted to combine primary cancer surgery with the creation of intelligible voice, but without aspiration. For

The major trends in current research on developmental dyslexia assume that impaired phonological processing is the core deficit in this disorder. Our earlier studies indicated that half of all dyslexic persons have significant deficits of bimanual motor coordination, and that impaired temporal resolution in motor action may identify a vertically transmitted behavioral phenotype in familial dyslexia. This report examines the relationship between spelling errors as a measure of impaired phonological processing and motor coordination deficits in the same dyslexia families. Affected family members

Anecdotal reports from individuals with autism suggest a loss of awareness to stimuli from one modality in the presence of stimuli from another. Here we document such a case in a detailed study of A.M., a 13-year-old boy with autism in whom significant autistic behaviours are combined with an uneven IQ profile of superior verbal and low performance abilities. Although A.M.'s speech is often unintelligible, and his behaviour is dominated by motor stereotypies and impulsivity, he can communicate by typing or pointing independently within a letter board. A series of experiments using simple and h

Anterior mandible defects result in loss of support for the tongue, floor of the mouth and lower lip, resulting in impairment of airway, feeding, and speech. We treated four patients with these "Andy Gump" deformities. Reconstruction was performed with two free flaps: a fibula osteocutaneous flap for the anterior mandible and floor of the mouth, and a soft tissue free flap for the lip, chin, and anterior neck. The lower lip was suspended cranially with fascia or tendon grafts ± mini-temporalis turndown flaps. All flaps survived completely. All patients were tube feed-dependent before surgery;

AIM: Familial hypomagnesaemia (FH) is a rare genetic condition. Neuromuscular and cardiovascular manifestations are well described, whereas cognitive and psychosocial development of children with FH is generally overlooked.
METHODS: Nine patients with FH were evaluated with psychiatric examination and psychometric tests for cognitive and psychosocial outcome.
RESULTS: Nine children (median age 10.1 yrs, range 3-16.3 yrs, 5 boys and 4 girls) with FH participated. Psychiatric symptoms were hyperactivity, irritability, sleep and speech problems and finger sucking. Common psychiatric diagnoses w

Impaired auditory sensitivity to amplitude rise time (ART) has been suggested to be a primary deficit in developmental dyslexia. The present study investigates whether impaired ART-sensitivity at a pre-reading age precedes and predicts later emerging reading problems in a sample of Dutch children. An oddball paradigm, with a deviant that differed from the standard stimulus in ART, was administered to 41-month-old children (30 genetically at-risk for developmental dyslexia and 14 controls) with concurrent EEG measurement. A second deviant that differed from the standard stimulus in frequency se

To assess the effects of ossicular chain malformations on the performance of bone conduction hearing aids, a human ear finite-element model … lso mainly decreases the mid-frequency response of the bone conduction, especially at 2 kHz. As the speech intelligibility has the most important frequency range at the range between 1 kHz and 2.5 kHz, the mid-frequency deterioration caused by ossicular chain malformations should be compensated in optimizing the design of the bone conduction hearing aids. BACKGROUND The body of literature on oral motor and swallowing disorders in patients with ataxia telangiectasia (AT) is limited. CASE REPORT The purpose of this study was to characterize oral motor and swallowing disorders in two siblings with AT, based on oral motor and swallowing assessments. Specific procedures were applied for oral motor and swallowing assessments and both patients underwent videofluoroscopy (VFS). Case 1 presented vocal instability, change in postural control during feeding; food retention in oral cavity; slower oral transit time; and multiple swallowing (signs for solid

Recognizing other individuals is an essential skill in humans and in other species. Over the last decade, it has become increasingly clear t … etween voices. In both cases, only voice-identity processing per se was affected: face recognition, speech intelligibility, emotion recognition, and musical ability were all comparable to controls. The findings confirm the existence of developmental phonagnosia as a modality-specific impairment and allow a first rough prevalence estimate.

This research study synthesizes research on applications of artificial intelligence (AI) to transform and improve quality of life for deaf and hard of hearing students. Twenty studies were analyzed, spanning domains including AI-enabled captioning, interpreters, personalized tutors, social robots, and assistive apps. Key findings demonstrate emerging AI innovations show promise for enhancing communication, learning, inclusion, and independence for deaf and hard of hearing youth. Technologies such as automatic speech recognition, natural language processing, and intelligent tutoring systems inc

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the factors related to social functioning in school students with high-functioning pervasive developmental disorder (HFPDD), we investigated speech delay in infancy, family history of pervasive developmental disorder (PDD), intelligence quotient (IQ), strength of PDD characteristics, age, age at diagnosis of PDD, and social adaptive functioning in students with HFPDD.
METHODS: Fifty-eight students with a diagnosis of HFPDD (IQ ≥ 85) were evaluated retrospectively. PDD characteristics were measured by the Pervasive Developmental Disorders Autism Society Japan Rating Scale

The auditory brainstem implant (ABI) is an auditory sensory device that is surgically placed on the cochlear nucleus of the brainstem for individuals who are deaf but unable to benefit from a cochlear implant (CI) due to anatomical abnormalities of the cochlea and/or eighth nerve, specific disease processes, or temporal bone fractures. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration has authorized a Phase I clinical trial to determine safety and feasibility of the ABI in up to 10 eligible young children who are deaf and either derived no benefit from the CI or were anatomically unable t
