Validity and Reliability of the Swedish Version of the Gugging Swallowing Screen for use in Acute Stroke Care.

The purpose of this study was to cross-culturally validate the Swedish version of the Gugging Swallowing Screen (GUSS-S) for use in the acute phase of stroke. Further, to evaluate the inter-rater reliability between different healthcare professionals. GUSS was translated into Swedish using a forward-backward method followed by expert rating to obtain content validity. For criterion validity, the GUSS-S score was compared with Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) assessed with the Penetration-Aspiration Scale (PAS) in acute stroke patients (≤ 96 h after stroke onset). Convergent

SARS-CoV-2 and Dysphagia: A Retrospective Analysis of COVID-19 Patients with Swallowing Disorders.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 can lead to impairment of neural networks involved in swallowing, since the act of swallowing is coordinated and performed by a diffuse brain network involving peripheral nerves and muscles. Dysphagia has been identified as a risk and predictive factor for the severest form of SARS-CoV-2 infection. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between swallowing disorders and COVID-19 in patients hospitalized for COVID-19. METHODS: We collected demographic data, medical information specific to dysphagia and data on medical treatments of patients with COVID-19. RESULTS: A t

An oral gel suitable for swallowing: The effect of micronization on the gel properties and microstructure of κ-carrageenan.

κ-Carrageenan (κ-Car) is an important material for preparing food gels and hydrogels. However, κ-Car gel has issues with high hardness and low water-holding capacity. Modification strategy of micronization is proposed for the first time to explore its influence on texture properties and gelling process of κ-Car gel, and to investigate the feasibility of κ-Car as a food matrix with low strength. κ-Car undergoing 60 min of micronization, the d(0.9) decreased by 79.33 %, SBET and Vtotal increased by 89.23 % and 95.27 %. The swelling rate and degree of gelling process increased significantly, and

A Modified Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing Evaluating Esophageal Dysphagia by a Capsule: A Pilot Study.

While functional endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is the most useful diagnostic test for the evaluation of dysphagia, it cannot evaluate the esophageal phase of swallowing. To evaluate if a modification for the FEES exam by swallowing an empty capsule and screening of the upper esophagus could be used for early detection of esophageal dysphagia. A prospective, single-center, pilot study. At the end of a standard FEES exam, the patients were asked to swallow an empty capsule. Fifteen seconds later, the endoscope was inserted into the upper esophagus. A pathological capsule test was de

The association of temporalis muscle thickness with post-stroke dysphagia based on swallowing kinematic analysis.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Post-stroke dysphagia (PSD) is a common functional deficit after stroke. Temporal muscle thickness (TMT) had been proven to be an independent factor for PSD. However, the relationship between TMT and PSD based on quantitative swallowing kinematic analysis remains unexplored. We aimed to investigate the association between TMT and PSD using videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS). METHOD: We retrospectively recruited stroke patients from May 2015 to March 2020 in the tertiary referral hospital. A total of 83 patients with dysphagia met all the enrollment criteria and were in

Swallowing Safety after Remote sub-total Esophagectomy: How Important is Tongue Pressure?

The factors related to oropharyngeal dysphagia after remote esophagectomy (greater than five months) remain unclear. This study aimed to assess patient perception of dysphagia, maximum anterior isometric pressure (MAIP), maximum posterior isometric pressure (MPIP), lingual swallowing pressure (LSP) and radiographic physiological components of the oral and pharyngeal phases of swallowing in patients who are post remote sub-total esophagectomy (SE). Patient perception of dysphagia was assessed using the Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10). MAIP, MPIP, and LSP were measured using the Iowa Oral Perfor

Surveying the International Prevalence and Nature of Eating, Drinking and Swallowing Difficulties in Adults Presenting with Fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a centralized pain syndrome characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, sleep and sensory issues. Fibromyalgia is present in up to 8% of the global population, disproportionally affecting females. Research acknowledges that patients with similar rheumatic/neurological disorders experience eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties. There are also anecdotal reports regarding dysphagia among the fibromyalgia community. However, there is limited research exploring these issues, with potential impact on care delivery and patient outcomes. This study investigated the nature and pre

Chronic intermittent hypoxia reveals role of the Postinspiratory Complex in the mediation of normal swallow production.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent sleep-related breathing disorder that results in multiple bouts of intermittent hypoxia. OSA has many neurological and systemic comorbidities, including dysphagia, or disordered swallow, and discoordination with breathing. However, the mechanism in which chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) causes dysphagia is unknown. Recently, we showed the postinspiratory complex (PiCo) acts as an interface between the swallow pattern generator (SPG) and the inspiratory rhythm generator, the preBötzinger complex, to regulate proper swallow-breathing coordination (H

The Effect of Oropharyngeal Resting Tremor on Swallowing Function in a Clinical Cohort of People with Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, with hallmark symptomology typically consisting of tremor, bradykinesia, and rigidity. Though the classic "pill-rolling" rest tremor in the hand or upper limb are often the most salient, it can occur throughout the body including the lower limbs, jaw, face, or tongue. There have been investigations into other motor related phenomena potentially affecting swallow function in PwPD previously. However, there have been no investigations of how oropharyngeal resting tremor in structures such as the tongue or larynx explicitly affe
