A comparison of patency and interventions in thigh versus Hemodialysis Reliable Outflow grafts for chronic hemodialysis vascular access.

OBJECTIVE: With improvements in medical management and survival of patients with end-stage renal disease, maintaining durable vascular access is increasingly challenging. This study compared primary, assisted primary, and secondary patency, and procedure-specific complications, and evaluated whether the number of interventions to maintain or restore patency differed between prosthetic femoral-femoral looped inguinal access (thigh) grafts and Hemodialysis Reliable Outflow (HeRO; Hemosphere Inc, Minneapolis, Minn) grafts. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective, intention-to-treat analysis was

Provisional Replacement of Anterior Teeth: A Review of Clinical Techniques and Case Report in a Dental School Training Experience.

Upon the premature loss of permanent anterior teeth from unanticipated trauma or by ongoing patient neglect requiring surgery, patient requisites of functional and esthetic considerations must be addressed. Interim management can be achieved through the use of several diverse fixed and/or removable treatment modalities. The purposes of this report are to provide a review of traditional and unconventional techniques for interim replacement of missing anterior teeth and to present a clinical report demonstrating the fabrication of a removable, thermoplastic (vacuum-formed) EssixTM prosthesis, ut

Non-Orthodontic, Non-Restorative Closure of Acquired Diastemata.

AIM: To illustrate the reversibility of "pathologic tooth migration" in several patients that were managed by periodontal therapy alone, along with a review of the relevant literature. BACKGROUND: Pathologic tooth migration (PTM) is a common phenomenon among patients seeking dental care. Different etiologic factors have been implicated in PTM: loss of periodontal support, occlusal interferences, posterior bite collapse, and various oral habits such as: lip biting, tongue thrusting, and playing wind instruments. Identification of all the causative factors involved in PTM is crucial for a succe

Regression of Calcium Channel Blocker--Induced Gingival Enlargement in the Absence of Periodontal Therapy.

AIM: To illustrate the negative effect of calcium channel blocker (CCB) drugs on the gingival tissues and the reversibility of these lesions. CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors examined a forty-eight year-old male patient with drug-induced gingival enlargement associated with diltiazem, a CCB drug. Prior to initiating the proposed periodontal treatment, the patient was advised to consult his physician, for a possible switch to a different anti-hypertensive drug. The patient returned to the clinic three months later with a significant regression of the gingival overgrowth, which was induced by the

Diagnostic considerations of calcified lymph nodes.

Dentists are responsible for the diagnosis of abnormalities involving both hard and soft tissues in and around the oral cavity. In addition to a clinical examination, the radiographic evaluation will often highlight abnormalities within the radiographic field. A relatively uncommon radiographic abnormality is calcification of lymph nodes, which may be associated with a number of pathologic processes, both local and systemic. We present and discuss lymph node calcifications and the diagnostic considerations associated with them in order to assist practitioners in managing their patients appropr

Gummy smile: could it be genetic? Hereditary gingival fibromatosis.

Gingival enlargement is common among patients and can be caused by a variety of etiological factors. The most common reason is poor oral hygiene and high bacterial load that leads to gingival inflammation and enlargement. Other implicated factors include systemic drugs, such as phenytoin (Dilantin) taken by epileptic patients, calcium channel blockers such as nifedipine (Procardia) and verapamil (Calan) for the treatment of hypertension, arrhythmia and angina. Another class of medication associated with gingival enlargement is immunosuppressive agents given to organ-transplant patients to prev
