Hosts, seasonal occurrence and life cycle of Rhipicentor nuttalli (Acari: Ixodidae).

There are only two species worldwide within the genus Rhipicentor, namely Rhipicentor bicornis and Rhipicentor nuttalli and both occur only in Africa. Rhipicentor nuttali has a widespread distribution in South Africa and the present investigation was initiated to elucidate its host preference, seasonality and life cycle. Rock elephant shrews, Elephantulus myurus were examined for ticks at four localities in the Free State Province, one in Gauteng Province and two in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Cape elephant shrews, Elephantulus edwardii were examined at two places in the Western Cape Provi

Immunisation of smallholder dairy cattle against anaplasmosis and babesiosis in Malawi.

A field study was conducted in the Southern Region of Malawi to evaluate the possible benefits of immunisation of improved dairy cattle against Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis. Friesian crossbred heifers were immunised when they were being reared on Government farms. They were then issued to smallholder farmers, together with unvaccinated controls, where many of them were exposed to heavy tick infestation. Vaccination was shown to provide a significant degree of protection against babesiosis on the smallholder farms; 15/32 unvaccinated controls developed clinical diseas

Experimental transmission of Babesia ovata oshimensis n. var. of cattle in Japan by Haemaphysalis longicornis.

Transovarial transmission of a newly isolated large intraerythrocytic parasite, Babesia sp. 1 by Haemaphysalis longicornis was experimentally demonstrated. Larvae of H. longicornis were transovarially infected with the parasite by feeding as adults on the calf which had been experimentally infected with B. sp. 1. Piroplasms of B. sp. 1 were observed in peripheral blood of the calf which was infested with the parasite-infected larvae. Based on the transmissibility of the parasite with vector ticks, this parasite was suggested to be a variety of B. ovata. Thus, we propose a new variety name for

[Parasitic diseases--a current problem area in intensive pasture management].

Current problems of intensive cattle pasture farming are considered with regard to three main aspects: parasite, habitat, biotop. Among the economically significant parasitic infections in the G.D.R. livestock of cattle, 15 must be considered to be productivity-reducing factors: trichostrongylidosis, dictyocaulosis, fasciolosis, babesiosis, pasture-coccidiosis (hypodermosis, stephanofilariosis--both eradicated!), mass-incidence of flies and black flies, tick infestation, thelaziosis, monieziosis, dicrocoeliosis, cysticercosis and hydatidosis. Incidence, scale of economic losses and present sta

Francisella-Like Endosymbionts and Rickettsia Species in Local and Imported Hyalomma Ticks.

Hyalomma ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) are hosts for Francisella-like endosymbionts (FLE) and may serve as vectors of zoonotic disease agents. This study aimed to provide an initial characterization of the interaction between Hyalomma and FLE and to determine the prevalence of pathogenic Rickettsia in these ticks. Hyalomma marginatum, Hyalomma rufipes, Hyalommadromedarii, Hyalommaaegyptium, and Hyalommaexcavatum ticks, identified morphologically and molecularly, were collected from different hosts and locations representing the distribution of the genus Hyalomma in Israel, as well as from migratory

Pepscan and bioinformatic strategies for identification of potential B-cell epitopes for a peptide-based vaccine for tick control.

The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus poses a major problem to the livestock industry worldwide, with acaricides resistance presenting an increasing challenge. On other hand, vaccination has been suggested as a better strategy for tick control, and peptide-based vaccines could be developed to target multiple tick antigens. Nevertheless, there are still limitations to the identification of epitopes in tick candidate antigens, as the bioinformatics tools currently available were developed almost exclusively based on mammalian genomes. Therefore, improving the performance of B-cell epitope pred

Toxicosis in human and domestic hosts caused by ixodid ticks detected with Anaplasma platys and Hepatozoon ayorgbor.

Ticks are hematophagous ectoparasites that pose substantial threats by vectoring several pathogens and by directly inducing tick toxicosis both in animals and humans. No studies have reported tick toxicosis in humans or animals in Pakistan. This study aimed to investigate tick toxicosis in human and animals, and screen these ticks for tick-borne pathogens. A human toxicosis case was observed in District Lakki Marwat, where 51-years-old male farmer was bitten by Hyalomma scupense. A total of 239 hosts were examined for tick toxicosis in the five districts of northern Pakistan, in which 54 hosts

Genetic characterization of Rhipicephalus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) in Africa reveals the presence of diverse haplotypes within a single clade: Implications for pathogens transmission and tick control in a predominantly pastoral production system.

The Asian blue tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini, 1888) is renowned as a notorious pest of veterinary importance globally. Its recent introduction to West Africa and subsequent eastward invasion and displacement of native tick fauna in many African countries is alarming, considering the prevalent unrestricted livestock migration in these regions. This study determined the genetic diversity of R. microplus in Africa based on the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit one (cox1) gene sequences in comparison with global sequences. Phylogenetic and genetic diversity analyses

Prevalence of Rickettsia spp. Infection in Ticks Collected from Shelter Dogs in Tulcea County, Romania.

Ticks are one of the most important vectors of zoonotic pathogens in Europe, including Rickettsia spp. In Romania, several pathogenic species belonging to the Spotted Fever Group (SFG) transmitted primarily through tick bites have been identified. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of Rickettsia spp. infection in ticks collected from public shelter dogs in Tulcea County, Romania, as an indicator of pathogen circulation within shelter environments and their potential epidemiological relevance. A total of 730 ticks collected between March 2023 and September 2024 from 21

Anaplasma phagocytophilum infection of domestic cats: 16 cases from the northeastern USA.

OBJECTIVES: Anaplasma phagocytophilum is an Ixodes species-transmitted rickettsial organism that is occasionally associated with clinical abnormalities in humans, ruminants, horses, dogs and cats. While serological evidence of A phagocytophilum exposure is common in cats in Ixodes species endemic areas, reports of clinical feline anaplasmosis are few. The objective of this study was to describe the clinical and laboratory abnormalities and treatment responses in 16 cats with A phagocytophilum DNA amplified from blood. METHODS: Commercial laboratory electronic records were searched to find cat

Molecular characterization of Rickettsia massiliae and Anaplasma platys infecting Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks and domestic dogs, Buenos Aires (Argentina).

Rickettsioses, ehrlichioses and anaplasmoses are emerging diseases that are mainly transmitted by arthropods and that affect humans and animals. The aim of the present study was to use molecular techniques to detect and characterize those pathogens in dogs and ticks from Buenos Aires city. We studied 207 Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks and 52 canine blood samples from poor neighborhoods of Buenos Aires city. The samples were molecularly screened for the genera Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasma by PCR and sequencing. DNA of Rickettsia massiliae (3.4%) and Anaplasma platys (13.5%) was detected

Early immunologic events at the tick-host interface.

Ixodes species ticks are competent vectors of tick-borne viruses including tick-borne encephalitis and Powassan encephalitis. Tick saliva has been shown to facilitate and enhance viral infection. This likely occurs by saliva-mediated modulation of host responses into patterns favorable for viral infection and dissemination. Because of the rapid kinetics of tick-borne viral transmission, this modulation must occur as early as tick attachment and initiation of feeding. In this study, cutaneous bite-site lesions were analyzed using Affymetrix mouse genome 430A 2.0 arrays and histopathology at 1,

Prospective health assessment of Fort Campbell, Kentucky patrons bitten by ticks.

Amblyomma americanum is an aggressive human-biting tick that transmits several known human pathogens and is associated with a Lyme disease-like illness of unknown etiology. To determine the frequency, distinguishing clinical characteristics, and etiology ofA. americanum-associated illness and identify associated risk factors, a prospective study of adult tick-bite victims was conducted at Fort Campbell from 2005-2007. Forty-two participants submitted ticks, none of which contained Borrelia lonestari or B. burgdorferi DNA. Thirty-three participants completed a follow-up health survey; 14 report

[Tick borne encephalitis and enviromental changes].

Currently observed markedly increased incidence of various tick borne diseases in many parts of Europe is due to documented climatic changes as well anthropogenic influence on habitat structure. One of the analyzed factors is tendency to increase of the spring temperatures, especially in the third decade of the April. Such conditions (spring temperatures above 7-10 degrees C) let the nymphs and larvae of Ixodes ricinus to feed simultaneously on rodents. This increases the risk of infection of Ixodes ricinus with TBE virus, so dangerous for humans.

Investigations on the host seeking and finding of Argas (Persicargas) walkerae (Ixodoidea: Argasidae).

In investigations concerning the influence of stimuli emitted by chickens on the host-finding behaviour of hungry female adult Argas walkerae ticks, we found that 92.5% of the ticks migrated to the stimulus source following their simultaneous exposure to odours and to a CO2 gradient increasing in the direction of the chicken, as opposed to 67.5% following their exposure to kairomones of chickens in the absence of CO2. Migration of the ticks toward the stimulus source was precipitated by a wide range of CO2 concentrations (varying from 0.06 to 1 vol% within the odour mixture) but always require

Focus of human parasitism by the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae).

Throughout most of its range, the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille), prefers dogs as a host, but human bites occasionally occur in the Mediterranean region and Central America; historically, this species has rarely bitten humans in the United States. A focus of 15 human bite cases by this tick is reported from four Air Force bases located within 200 miles of each other in north central Texas and southwestern Oklahoma. The sudden appearance of numerous documented bite cases indicates that either the species is becoming more anthropophilic in this area or than an introduction

An analysis of spirochete load, strain, and pathology in a model of tick-transmitted Lyme borreliosis.

Four laboratory-grown, low-passage isolates of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, B31, JD-1, 910255, and N40, were incorporated into Ixodes scapularis ticks to examine the pathogenesis of these isolates in mice after tick transmission. All isolates induced multifocal, lymphoid nodular cystitis, subacute, multifocal, necrotizing myocarditis, and a localized periostitis and arthritis of the femorotibial joint 6-18 weeks after tick infestation. In terms of the number of mice that demonstrated pathology in bladder, heart, and joint, the highest incidence of lesions occurred 12 weeks after tick bi
