This study was undertaken to examine the clinical relevance of antibodies detected in the sera of patients following renal transplantation. The sera from 23 transplant recipients with acute rejection and 10 transplant recipients with diagnosed chronic rejection were tested against various epithelial, monocyte and endothelial cell lines (A549, HTB44, primary renal epithelial, U937 and Ea-hy 926). Critically ill patient status and prior sternotomy have separately been associated with increased risk of mortality and morbidity after heart transplantation. Consequently, the justification of assigning urgent priority for transplantation to critically ill patients with prior sternotomy may be arguable. At the 32 European centres where livers are transplanted the actuarial survival rate for 1218 patients was 44% at 1 year and 41% at 2 years. Perioperative mortality (30 days) was 30%. In a homogeneous group of 467 cadaver kidney transplants performed within one single center between 1979 and 1987, we analysed the influence of main risk factors on long-term survival up to 72 months. Calculating survival rates by Kaplan-Meier actuarial methods the overall graft survival exceeded 71%. The corresponding patient survival was higher than 90%. The present paper describes a new in vivo method to study the action of pemphigus antibodies against human tissue. Oral mucosal biopsies from healthy donors were transplanted to athymic nude mice, which, a week later, were injected with serum from pemphigus patients.
