Disease burden in older Ukrainian refugees of war: a synthetic reanalysis of public records data.

BACKGROUND: Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Feb 24, 2022, more than 6 million Ukrainians, including hundreds of thousands of older people, have sought safety abroad. Older people generally have a higher burden of disease than younger people and the aim of our study was to estimate this burden in older Ukrainian refugees, given the potential financial and logistical impacts on the health-care systems of receiving countries. METHODS: On May 20, 2022, we searched the official websites of the Polish Ministry of Digitisation for data on Ukrainian refugees who had applied between Feb 24, 2

Are we missing opportunities to confirm the diagnosis of tuberculosis by microbial culture?

SETTING: Tuberculosis (TB) incidence is rising globally, with drug resistance becoming increasingly problematic. Microbiological confirmation ensures correct anti-tuberculous chemotherapy. OBJECTIVE/DESIGN: We retrospectively analysed all TB cases diagnosed in Central Manchester in 2009 investigating how often we are not achieving microbiological diagnosis, factors influencing this and whether opportunities to obtain microbiological samples are missed. RESULTS: 128/156 (82%) cases had samples sent for microbiology. Factors affecting this included disease site, with ocular disease least likel

Wegener's granulomatosis: experience from a Brazilian tertiary center.

Most epidemiological studies with Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) patients are based on populations from the Northern hemisphere, whereas very few studies have been conducted in Southern hemisphere populations, particularly from South America. The authors performed a large retrospective, demographic study including clinical and laboratory profiles of 134 consecutive WG patients seen at one Brazilian center from 1999 to 2009. Mean age at initial WG diagnosis was 43.4 +/- 15.5 years, and mean disease duration was 8.6 +/- 6.6 years. Sixty-four (47.8%) patients were male and a total of 113 (84.3%) s

Multimodal Evaluation of Presumed Tuberculous Serpiginous-Like Choroiditis.

Purpose: To evaluate multimodal imaging findings in longitudinal follow-up of a patient with presumed tuberculous serpiginous-like choroiditis (TB-SLC). Method: We evaluated multimodal imaging in a 62-year-old male with TB-SLC. Correlation between optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), swept-source OCT (SS-OCT) and fundus autofluorescence (FAF) at defined disease stages and evolution of observed imaging descriptors during long-term follow-up has not been previously reported. Results: OCTA of the active lesion demonstrated defined areas of choriocapillaris hypoperfusion, suggesting in

Nasolacrimal tuberculosis: case report highlighting the need for imaging in identifying and managing it effectively.

PURPOSE: To report a rare case of nasolacrimal tuberculosis, conduct a literature review, and to suggest an optimal management plan. METHODS: A 39-year old Zimbabwean female presented with a 3-year history of left epiphora, haemolacria and medial canthal mass. On ophthalmic examination there was no lateral displacement of the left globe. The initial management was external dacryocystorhinostomy. Histology of the biopsy was inconclusive and her symptoms did not improve. This prompted a referral to otolaryngology. Nasal examination revealed a friable mass of the middle turbinate. CT scan showed

ADJUNCTIVE INTRAVITREAL MOXIFLOXACIN AND RANIBIZUMAB IN THE MANAGEMENT OF INTRAOCULAR TUBERCULOMA.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of adjunctive intravitreal moxifloxacin and ranibizumab in the management of recalcitrant and treatment-naive cases of intraocular tuberculoma. METHODS: The study included 10 eyes of nine patients diagnosed with intraocular tuberculoma between June 2022 and March 2025 at a tertiary eye care center in India. All patients received systemic therapy and biweekly intravitreal injections of moxifloxacin (500 µg/0.1 mL) and ranibizumab (0.5 mg/0.05 mL) until clinical and anatomical regression of the tuberculoma. Patients were stratified into two groups: Group A (recalci

Orbital tuberculoma extending into the cranium.

Orbital tuberculoma is not uncommon in the developing countries, but intracranial extension of orbital tuberculoma is extremely rare. Our case, a 14-year-old girl, presented with proptosis and progressive painless diminution of vision eventually leading to loss of vision. MRI showed a mass with peripheral enhancement of contrast, separate from the optic nerve and extending into the cranium through the optic foramen. Early decompression and chemotherapy resulted in marked visual recovery. Histopathology of the excised lesion confirmed tuberculosis. The case is reported to highlight both the rar
