The virtual reality head-mounted display Oculus Rift induces motion sickness and is sexist in its effects.

Anecdotal reports suggest that motion sickness may occur among users of contemporary, consumer-oriented head-mounted display systems and that women may be at greater risk. We evaluated the nauseogenic properties of one such system, the Oculus Rift. The head-mounted unit included motion sensors that were sensitive to users' head movements, such that head movements could be used as control inputs to the device. In two experiments, seated participants played one of two virtual reality games for up to 15 min. In Experiment 1, 22% of participants reported motion sickness, and the difference in inci

Virtual and In Vitro Screens Reveal a Potential Pharmacophore that Avoids the Fibrillization of Aβ1-42.

Among the multiple factors that induce Alzheimer's disease, aggregation of the amyloid β peptide (Aβ) is considered the most important due to the ability of the 42-amino acid Aβ peptides (Aβ1-42) to form oligomers and fibrils, which constitute Aβ pathological aggregates. For this reason, the development of inhibitors of Aβ1-42 pathological aggregation represents a field of research interest. Several Aβ1-42 fibrillization inhibitors possess tertiary amine and aromatic moieties. In the present study, we selected 26 compounds containing tertiary amine and aromatic moieties with or without substit

A novel and simple approach to distinguish chronic prostatitis/ chronic pelvic pain syndrome IIIb from IIIa using virtual touch tissue quantification.

Virtual touch tissue quantification (VTTQ) is a new, promising technique for detecting the stiffness of tissues. To evaluate the performance of VTTQ in discrimination between chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome(CP/CPPS) IIIa and IIIb, VTTQ was performed in 147 patients with clinical definite CP/CPPS. The shear wave velocity (SWV) at inner gland and outer gland was quantified by implementing an acoustic radiation force impulse. The performance of different ratios of SWV at outer gland and inner gland in discrimination between CP/CPPS IIIa and IIIb was compared. CP/CPPS IIIb and III

Passive vs. active control of rhythmic ball bouncing: the role of visual information.

The simple task of bouncing a ball on a racket offers a model system for studying how human actors exploit the physics and information of the environment to control their behavior. Previous work shows that people take advantage of a passively stable solution for ball bouncing but can also use perceptual information to actively stabilize bouncing. In this article, we investigate (a) active and passive contributions to the control of bouncing, (b) the visual information in the ball's trajectory, and (c) how it modulates the parameters of racket oscillation. We used a virtual ball bouncing appara

Virtual cisternoscopy of intracranial vessels: a novel visualization technique using virtual reality.

This paper introduces a different visualization method which we call "virtual cisternoscopy" using 3D MRA data sets. Virtual cisternoscopy uses well known tools, such as perspective volume rendering (pVR), fly-through techniques, and interactive visualization and combines them to a new approach featuring motion to resolve spatial relationships of intracranial vessels and vascular malformations. With a dedicated flight protocol extraluminal topography of intracranial arteries was analyzed using pVR. For evaluation of difficult vascular malformations extraluminal views are necessary. Therefore,

Closed-loop EEG-based neurofeedback and brain-computer interface interventions for mental health: a review.

Electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have been widely explored for detecting and monitoring mental health-related states, with many existing studies focusing on identification and classification. Such approaches are primarily observational and provide limited support for intervention. Closed-loop EEG-based BCIs address this limitation by incorporating real-time feedback to observe neural activity. A key paradigm within this context is neurofeedback, in which users learn to modulate their own brain activity, with the aim of supporting improvements in mental states a

orthoSynAssign: refine orthogroups using synteny information.

Accurately identifying orthogroups is crucial for precise phylogenetic reconstruction, but clustering-based methods often generate complex, many-to-many orthogroups that include confounding paralogs. Incorporating synteny offers a robust strategy to refine these clusters into high-granularity, single-copy orthologs. We introduce orthoSynAssign, a user-friendly, high-performance rewrite of the orthogroup refinement tool OrthoRefine, combining an intuitive Python interface with a core computing engine written in Rust. This hybrid architecture ensures straightforward installation, seamless data p

Enhancing motor imagery detection efficacy using multisensory virtual reality priming.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) have been developed to allow users to communicate with the external world by translating brain activity into control signals. Motor imagery (MI) has been a popular paradigm in BCI control where the user imagines movements of e.g., their left and right limbs and classifiers are then trained to detect such intent directly from electroencephalography (EEG) signals. For some users, however, it is difficult to elicit patterns in the EEG signal that can be detected with existing features and classifiers. As such, new user control strategies and training paradigms have
