The early exposure of mother-litter dyads to adult male intruders in the home cage leads to the precocious expression of fear responses in rat pups when confronted with an intruder during the stress-hyporesponsive period (SHRP). As fear-related circuits are still maturing during this period in a sex dependent manner, this study investigated whether this early-life experience promotes the activation of fear-related circuits in 8-day-old female and male pups confronted with an adult male. As expected, pups exposed to male intruders from postnatal days (PND) 1-4 exhibited increased immobility and

BACKGROUND: The proliferation of novel psychoactive substances (NPS) in the drug market raises concerns about uncertainty on their pharmacological profile and the health hazard linked to their use. Within the category of synthetic stimulant NPS, the phenethylamine 2-Cl-4,5-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (2-Cl-4,5-MDMA) has been linked to severe intoxication requiring hospitalization. Thereby, the characterization of its pharmacological profile is urgently warranted.
METHODS: By in vivo brain microdialysis in adolescent and adult male rats we investigated the effects of 2-Cl-4,5-MDMA on dopamin

Intrauterine growth restriction and slow neonatal growth in humans are each associated with poorer learning, memory and cognitive flexibility in childhood and adulthood. The relative contributions of pre- and post-natal growth to cognitive outcomes are unclear, however. We therefore compared performance in learning, memory and reversal tasks using a modified Y-maze at 18 and 40 weeks of age in offspring of placentally-restricted (PR: 10 M, 13 F) and control (23 M, 17 F) ovine pregnancies. We also investigated relationships between size at birth, neonatal growth rates and cognitive outcomes. PR

Variation in sequencing of actions occurs in many natural behaviors, yet how such variation is maintained is poorly understood. We investigated maintenance of sequence variation in adult Bengalese finch song, a learned skill with rendition-to-rendition variation in the sequencing of discrete syllables (i.e., syllable "b" might transition to "c" with 70% probability and to "d" with 30% probability). We found that probabilities of transitions ordinarily remain stable but could be modified by delivering aversive noise bursts following one transition (e.g., "b→c") but not the alternative (e.g., "b

Mother-infant bonding develops rapidly following parturition and is accompanied by changes in sensory perception and behavior. Here, we study how ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) are represented in the brain of mothers. Using a mouse line that allows temporally controlled genetic access to active neurons, we find that the temporal association cortex (TeA) in mothers exhibits robust USV responses. Rabies tracing from USV-responsive neurons reveals extensive subcortical and cortical inputs into TeA. A particularly dominant cortical source of inputs is the primary auditory cortex (A1), suggesting

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Vocal fold paresis and paralysis are common conditions. Treatment options include augmentation laryngoplasty and voice therapy. The optimal management for this condition is unclear. The objective of this study was to assess possible neuromuscular compensation mechanisms that could potentially be used in the treatment of vocal fold paresis and paralysis.
STUDY DESIGN: In vivo canine model.
METHODS: In an in vivo canine model, we examined three conditions: 1) unilateral right recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) paresis and paralysis, 2) unilateral superior laryngeal nerve (S

OBJECTIVES: Based on our laboratory's newly confirmed motor pathway for glottic closure, we measured the glottic closing force (GCF) during isolated stimulation of the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (eSLN) in the porcine model. Glottic closure is 1 of the primary mechanisms for prevention of aspiration during deglutition.
METHODS: The recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) and eSLN were identified bilaterally in 4 porcine necks. Subsequently, GCF was measured with a pressure transducer as the distal ends of individual nerves were stimulated in 4 animals. The RLN mediated GCF was mea

The classification of asthma to identify forms which have different contributing causes is useful for all cases in which the disease requires regular treatment, but it is essential for the management of severe asthma. Many forms of the disease can occur, and complex mixtures are not uncommon; here we artificially separated the cases into four groups: (i) inhalant allergy, (ii) fungal sensitization with or without colonization (including ABPA); (iii) severe sinusitis with or without aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD), and (iv) non-inflammatory cases, including those associated with

The role of the nucleus retroambiguus (NRA) in the context of respiration control has been subject of debate for considerable time. To solve this problem, we chemically (using d, l-homocysteic acid) stimulated the NRA in unanesthetized precollicularly decerebrated cats and studied the respiratory effect via simultaneous measurement of tracheal pressure and electromyograms of diaphragm, internal intercostal (IIC), cricothyroid (CT), and external oblique abdominal (EO) muscles. NRA-stimulation 0-1 mm caudal to the obex resulted in recruitment of IIC muscle and reduction in respiratory frequency.

Both PMMA (polymethylmetacrylate) microspheres (PM) and stabilized hyaluronic acid (HA) are recently used for facial augmentation. The aim of this study was to test functional effect, durability, and safety of the injection of these two materials into true vocal folds, and test their availability as injection laryngoplasty materials in vivo canine model. The study was carried out with 16 beagle dogs (8 males and 8 females, average weight of 12.4 kg). No biological difference was detected between two groups; PM (Artecoll) injection and HA (Restylane) injection group. After inducing complete uni

In the pretentorial periaqueductal grey (PAG), the region producing pressor responses, vocalization and other somatic and visceral signs (VPR) of the defence reaction and another region producing pressor responses (PR) were localized by electrical stimulation in adult cats, anesthetized with intraperitoneal chloralose (40 mg/kg) and urethane (400 mg/kg). The pressor responses included increases of systemic arterial pressure (SAP) and heart rate, increases of blood flow in the common carotid and femoral arteries and a decrease of blood flow in the superior mesenteric artery. The VPR was found i

RATIONALE: Although optimal epithelial barrier function is essential to laryngeal health and disease, there is a surprising paucity of literature on the underlying immunological mechanisms in laryngeal epithelia. Toll like receptors (TLR) are a class of pattern-recognition receptor (PRR) proteins that are essential for regulating the innate and adaptive immune response in mucosal epithelia. Identifying the presence of TLR receptors in laryngeal epithelia and delineating their role in laryngeal inflammation will contribute to our understanding of innate and adaptive immune responses in the voca

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Recurrent laryngeal neuropathy (RLN) is a common and debilitating peripheral nerve disease of horses, but it remains unclear if this disease is a mono- or polyneuropathy. An understanding of the distribution of the neuropathological lesions in RLN affected horses is fundamental to studying the aetiology of this very significant disease of tall horses.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether RLN should be classified as a mono- or polyneuropathy.
METHODS: Multiple long peripheral nerves and their innervated muscles were examined systematically in 3 clinically affected RLN

Stroke often impairs the ability of the vocal cords to close during deglutition, resulting in aspiration. The current study is a further advance on the application of the concept of an artificial reflex arc during swallowing. The second and third cervical branches were bilaterally isolated in four dogs and baseline sensory nerve traffic was detected via tripolar perineural electrodes. Cervical skin pressure-induced suprathreshold signals were used to trigger vocal cord contraction via bipolar electrodes passed around the recurrent laryngeal nerves. Skin subtended by the cervical nerves was imp

Fascinating advances are ongoing in the rehabilitation of the incompetent larynx. The advent of microprocessor technology makes possible the construction of potentially implantable devices designed to allow the pacing of various functions of the reinnervated canine larynx. The history of electrical neurostimulation as a technique in laryngeal rehabilitation is reviewed and future human applications discussed in terms of technical feasibility and clinical needs.

The course of atrophy of type I and type II muscle fibers of the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle, the lateral cricoarytenoid muscle and the medial thyroarytenoid muscle of 9 dogs have been investigated after resection of the ipsilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve after 2, 4 and 10 months. Using ATP-ase staining the histochemical results revealed a predominant atrophy of type II fibers, a reactive hypertrophy of type I fibers after a period of 4 months and a pattern of type-grouping with signs of a complete reinnervation in all laryngeal muscles within 10 months. The existence of a supplementary
