This paper seeks to present information on apotemnophilia. It points out the need of a man to have a healthy leg amputated, despite the fact that he cannot find a surgeon who will do so. By writing this paper, the author hopes to bring to light the characteristics underlying such a desire. After reviewing the scarce literature on this subject, a case history of apotemnophilia has been given. In the discussion similarities and discrepancies in two cases reported by Money have been summarized.

An exploration of all Freud's writings on trauma from 1885 is proposed. Trauma, a central concept in his first works, always kept a place in his theory. He conceived it as a consequence of an external perception leading to a sudden affect which cannot be mastered by the psyche. For him, the excitation is so strong that it threatens the ego and provokes a breach of the protective shield. The idea that he would have renounced to this topic at the end of the nineteenth century is irrational.

Our purpose in writing this supplement is to provide an overview of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). This supplement is not all-encompassing; some of the material presented is controversial; and we recognize that it does represent the bias of physicians at the Center for Voice Disorders of Wake Forest University. Furthermore, we understand that we raise as many questions as we answer. Still, we hope that this supplement will serve as a useful summary of LPR for clinicians, and that it will stimulate others in the research arena.

Blunt abdominal trauma is one of the leading causes of trauma-related deaths in children. The commonly affected organs include the spleen, liver and kidneys, followed by uncommon ones such as the pancreas and intestine. Isolated duodenal injury is very rare and, at times, poses a diagnostic challenge due to the paucity of clinical symptoms and signs. Hence, delayed presentation is not uncommon. In this write-up, five such cases are presented with emphasis on their clinical presentation, diagnosis, management and outcome.

This study describes the life and works of Soranus of Ephesus (98-138 AD) who was born in Ephesus in Asia Minor and he practiced medicine in Alexandria and Rome in the Roman period (1st/2nd century AD). Although the majority of his writings have been lost, his surviving popular scientific textbook, a four-volume treatise on "Gynecology", describes ancient medical practice regarding human embryology, paediatrics and obstetrics.

In this paper we write exactly solvable generalizations of one-dimensional quantum XY and Ising-like models by using 2^{d}-dimensional gamma matrices as the degrees of freedom on each site. We show that these models result in quadratic Fermionic Hamiltonians with Jordan-Wigner-like transformations. We illustrate the techniques using a specific case of four-dimensional gamma matrices and explore the quantum phase transitions present in the model.

The prepurchase examination is performed to aid a prospective purchaser in determining the suitability of a specific patient for an anticipated use and, perhaps, an intended rider. The ophthalmic portion of that examination can be performed satisfactorily with minimal equipment by following a systematic protocol that includes examination of all segments of the globe and an evaluation of the patient's vision. Findings of the examination should be discussed with and made in writing to the buyer so that he or she can make an informed decision about the suitability of the purchase.

While there are many other possible reasons injuries to nursing staff, carer and client occur, the most important linking factors relating to musculoskeletal disorders and manual handling of people is the ongoing inappropriateness or lack of suitably designed and equipped work areas. As physiotherapist Lynn Varcin-Coad writes, staff are bearing the brunt of inefficiencies of design and lack of high order risk control.

"Application for Voluntary Hospitalization" signed by 13 manics (33 forms) and 13 paranoid schizophrenics (37 forms) at the time of their admissions were examined to test the validity of the hypothesis that one who writes anything more than his first name, middle name, or initial, and last name is likely to be manic. A physician and a nurse who were blind to the diagnosis were able to differentiate, at a significant level, mania from paranoid schizophrenia, using this criterion.

Writing with the perspective of a mentor, friend, and colleague, I am elated to contribute to this commemorative issue of the Journal of Fungi, which is dedicated to the landmark contributions of Dr. Dimitrios P. Kontoyiannis, who has greatly advanced our understanding of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of mucormycosis. Through his efforts and leadership, the four pillars in the management of mucormycosis have been made much stronger: early diagnosis, the rapid initiation of antifungal therapy, augmentation of the host's defenses, and surgical intervention.

Writer's cramp is a rare movement disorder of unknown etiology, in which a cramp is elicited primarily or exclusively with writing. We describe a patient with primary writer's cramp that was completely improved by drinking a small amount of alcohol. Although it is unclear how "alcohol" ameliorated the dystonia, this case suggests that alcohol might reverse the pathophysiologic changes in the entire basal ganglia circuit. In addition, we cannot rule out the possibility that the anxiolytic influence of alcohol may contribute to the beneficial effects on dystonia.

Writer's cramp (WC) is a form of focal task-specific dystonia, which is brought on by writing. Although most cases are sporadic, a positive family history is present in 5% to 20% of cases. To date, WC has been reported in several families with primary torsion dystonia, including DYT7, a pure focal dystonia, and in the mixed dystonias, DYT1, DYT6, and DYT13. We describe a family of Bulgarian descent with three brothers presenting with a very-late-onset dystonic WC, compatible with linkage to chromosome 18p.

J, a mature age student with severe dyslexia, entered university with virtually no reading and writing. She could recognize very few words, she had difficulty with spelling simple words and her handwriting was poor. She also had distinctive difficulties with numbers. Yet, she graduated successfully 3 years after entry. In this paper, the characteristics of her disabilities are discussed and the teaching programme and support systems set up to help her are described. Some theoretical and practical implications which arise from J's case are also considered.

We present a case of Moya-Moya syndrome in a 28-year-old female patient with an unusual debut in the form of mirror-image writing. The patient was studied by CAT, conventional cerebral angiography, MRI and angio-MRI. The results obtained show a very good correlation between the images of conventional angiography and those obtained by angio-MRI. Angio-MRI requires no contrast, is noninvasive and rapid, promising to be a first class alternative in the diagnosis and follow-up of Moya-Moya syndrome.

A 47-year-old woman developed a progressive sensory deficit of the upper limbs. She lost perception of joint position, vibratory sense, skin-writing and stereognosis. Repeated tests by several examiners, up to 10 years after the onset, demonstrated normal pain and temperature sensation. The right hypoglossal nerve was involved at a late stage of the disease. CT and MRI showed an intramedullary cavity from C1 to T7. Somato-sensory evoked potentials from stimulation of the median nerves confirmed the bilateral impairment of the lemniscal pathways.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to qualitatively explore the perceived impacts of an undergraduate biology course that integrated mindfulness on student well-being.
