Estrogen requirements in girls with Turner syndrome; how low is enough for initiating puberty and uterine development?

We conducted this study to find the adequate initial estrogen dose for adolescent girls with Turner Syndrome (TS). We reviewed the medical records of 19 girls with TS and premature ovarian failure (POF), aged 13 to 17 years, who were referred to our adolescent gynecology clinic for ERT. Nine patients were treated with 0.5 mg estradiol valerate (EV) and 10 patients were treated with 1 mg EV as an initial estrogen dose for 1 year. Breast development, changes in uterine size and bone mineral density were measured before and after 1 year of ERT. All patients showed breast budding after 1 year of E

Measurement-Based Mental Health Care for Adolescents in Africa: Protocol for a Computerized Adaptive Test.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent mental health care is constrained not only by limited treatment capacity but also by the absence of precise and efficient tools to identify and triage those in need. Measurement-based mental health care relies on standardized assessments to guide identification, treatment selection, and ongoing monitoring of mental disorders. However, conventional assessments present a trade-off: diagnostic interviews lack feasibility at scale, while brief screening tools result in misclassification and suboptimal allocation of limited mental health resources. Computerized adaptive testi

Evolution of testicular asymmetry during puberty in adolescents without and with a left varicocele.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the evolution of the Testicular Atrophy Index (TAI) in adolescent boys with and without a left varicocele with special attention for the currently postulated cut-off value of 20%. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: During 2015-2019, 364 adolescent boys aged 11-16 years were recruited. Genital examination and scrotal ultrasonography were repeatedly performed (≥4 month intervals). Testicular volume (TV) was calculated using the Lambert formula (length × width × height × 0.71). TAI was calculated using the formula: [(TVright - TVleft)/TVlargest (right, left)] × 100. RESULTS: The final

Early life temperamental anxiety is associated with excessive alcohol intake in adolescence: A rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) model.

Teenage alcohol abuse is a major health concern, particularly because the majority of alcohol consumed by teenagers is via binge drinking, a known risk factor for increasing the likelihood for the development of future alcohol use disorders (AUDs). Identifying individuals at risk for excessive alcohol intake in adolescence is a step toward developing effective preventative measures and intervention programs. As adults with AUDs tend to self-medicate their anxiety with alcohol, this longitudinal study assesses the role of infant anxiety-like temperament in the development of adolescent alcohol

Severity and Determinants of Anemia Among Adolescent Girls in Africa: A Multicountry and Multilevel Analysis of 25 Countries.

BACKGROUND: Anemia remains a major public health concern in Africa, with substantial health and developmental consequences. Adolescents, particularly girls, are at increased risk due to rapid growth, menstruation, and inadequate dietary intake. Identifying the severity and determinants of anemia among adolescent girls in Africa is crucial for developing appropriate interventions, yet evidence remains scarce. OBJECTIVE: To assess the severity and determinants of anemia among adolescent girls in Africa using nationally representative data. METHODS: Data were obtained from the most recent Demog

Adolescent circadian rhythm disruption increases reward and risk-taking.

INTRODUCTION: Circadian rhythm disturbances have long been associated with the development of psychiatric disorders, including mood and substance use disorders. Adolescence is a particularly vulnerable time for the onset of psychiatric disorders and for circadian rhythm and sleep disruptions. Preclinical studies have found that circadian rhythm disruption (CRD) impacts the brain and behavior, but this research is largely focused on adult disruptions. Here, we hypothesized that adolescent CRD would have a greater effect on psychiatric-related behaviors, relative to adult disruption. METHODS: W

Association of hospitalization for suicide attempts in adolescent girls with subsequent hospitalization for eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between adolescent hospitalization for suicide attempts and the subsequent risk of eating disorder hospitalization. METHOD: This was a cohort study of 162,398 adolescent girls in Quebec, Canada, including 7741 with suicide attempts before 20 years of age, matched to 154,657 adolescents with no attempt between 1989 and 2019. The main exposure measure was suicide attempt hospitalization. The main outcome measure was hospitalization for an eating disorder up to 31 years later, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and other eating disorders. We used

Understanding sexual and reproductive health needs of adolescents: evidence from a formative evaluation in Wakiso district, Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents are frequently reluctant to seek sexual and reproductive health services (SRH). In Uganda, adolescent health and development is constrained by translation of the relevant policies to practice. Recent studies done in central Uganda have shown that there is need for a critical assessment of adolescent friendly services (AFS) to gain insights on current practice and inform future interventions. This study aimed to assess the sexual reproductive health needs of the adolescents and explored their attitudes towards current services available. METHODS: A qualitative study w

Practice changes in childhood surgery for ambiguous genitalia?

OBJECTIVE: In 2001, this team published an observational study of the clinical outcomes of a cohort of adolescent girls born with ambiguous genitalia. The poor outcomes observed represented a major scientific challenge to the standard practice of childhood feminising genital surgery. That publication was one of several contributing to a call for change in surgical practice, which culminated in the publication of the Chicago Consensus Document in 2006. The aim of this current study was to repeat the same evaluation of clinical outcomes on a recent cohort of adolescent girls and compare the two

Examining the Effects of Parental Influence on Adolescent Smoking Behaviors: A Multilevel Analysis of the Global School-Based Student Health Survey (2003-2011).

INTRODUCTION: Based on a large cross-national dataset, we investigated the role of parental smoking (a risk factor) and parental supervision (a protective factor) on the frequency of smoking by youths in resource-poor countries. In addition, we tested for cross-level interactions between these two predictors and national wealth on the outcome variable. METHODS: Pooled cross-sectional data from the Global School-based Student Health Survey (2003-2011) were analyzed, which consists of 58956 students in 31 countries. Hierarchical linear models were estimated to examine the associations between t

Violence exposure across the life-course and allostatic load: Applying the structural life course modeling approach to examine violence temporal patterns and the promotive and protective role of adolescent social connectedness.

Exposure to violence is a major public health concern whose physiological consequences accumulate across the life-course in ways that are not yet fully understood. Although violence exposure has been linked to elevated allostatic load markers (AL), no study has directly compared whether developmental timing, cumulative burden or recency of exposure most strongly drives this relationship, nor whether adolescent social connectedness operates through promotive effects, protective effects, or both to mitigate these physiological consequences. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adol

Adolescent reinforcement-learning trajectories predict cocaine-taking behaviors in adult male and female rats.

The anatomical, structural, and functional adaptations that occur in the brain during adolescence are thought to facilitate improvements in … a lower ∆+ parameter and greater cocaine self-administration in adulthood. These data indicate that adolescent development plays a critical role in drug use susceptibility. Future studies aimed at understanding the neurobiological mechanisms that underlie these age-related changes in decision-making could provide new insights into the biobehavioral mechanisms mediating …

Growth velocity and biological variables during puberty in achondroplasia.

BACKGROUND: Achondroplasia is the most common form of inherited disproportionate short stature. Cross-sectional design studies of height show that, during childhood, height standard deviation scores (SDS) declines steadily and reaches a mean adult height at -6.42 and -6.72 SDS. However, there is a lack of knowledge about longitudinal growth and biological variables during puberty for children with achondroplasia. Here we report the growth velocity and biological parameters during puberty in children with achondroplasia. METHODS: The study was an observational, cohort study. A total of 23 pati

Effect of sex on ethanol consumption and conditioned taste aversion in adolescent and adult rats.

RATIONALE: Vulnerability to alcoholism is determined by many factors, including the balance of pleasurable vs. aversive alcohol-induced sensations: pleasurable sensations increase intake, while aversive sensations decrease it. Female sex and adolescent age are associated with lower sensitivity to intake-reducing effects and more rapid development of alcohol abuse. OBJECTIVES: This study assessed voluntary drinking and the aversive effects of alcohol to determine whether these measures are inversely related across the sexes and development. METHODS: Voluntary drinking of 20 % ethanol in an ev

Effect of prenatal methadone on reinstated behavioral sensitization induced by methamphetamine in adolescent rats.

It has been known that methadone maintenance treatment is the standard treatment of choice for pregnant opiate addicts. However, there are few data on newborn outcomes especially in the cross talk with other addictive agents. The present study was to investigate the effect of prenatal exposure to methadone on methamphetamine (METH)-induced behavioral sensitization as an indicator of drug addiction in later life. Pregnant rats received saline or methadone (7 mg/kg, s.c.) twice daily from E3 to E20. To induce behavioral sensitization, offspring (5 weeks old) were treated with METH (1mg/kg, i.p.)

Peeking into the minds of troubled adolescents: the utility of polysomnography sleep studies in an inpatient psychiatric unit.

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are commonly associated with the primary diagnostic criteria for many psychiatric disorders. Evidence suggests sleep disturbances may precede development of psychiatric disorders and the severity of psychopathology reflects the severity of sleep problems. Polysomnography (PSG) sleep studies in child and adolescent psychiatric populations, a particularly at risk group, has considerable value but has been more elusive requiring further investigation. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of PSG sleep studies and psychiatrist evaluations of 106 adolescents

Intergenerational continuities and discontinuities in intimate partner violence: a two-generational prospective study.

This study focuses on intergenerational continuity in violent partner relationships. We investigate whether exposure to caregiver intimate partner violence (IPV) during adolescence leads to increased involvement in IPV during early adulthood (age 21-23) and adulthood (age 29-31). We also investigate whether this relationship differs by gender. Although there is theoretical and empirical support for intergenerational continuity of relationship violence, there are few prospective studies of this issue. We use data from the Rochester Youth Development Study (RYDS), a longitudinal study of the dev

Associations between middle childhood executive control aspects and adolescent substance use and externalizing and internalizing problems.

This study examines the degree to which two middle childhood executive control aspects, working memory and combined inhibitory control/flexible shifting, predict adolescent substance use and externalizing and internalizing problems. Participants were 301 children (ages 3-6 years; 48.2% male) recruited from a Midwestern city in the United States and followed into adolescence (ages 14-18 years). Working memory had a statistically significant unadjusted association with externalizing problems (r = -.30, p = .003) in a confirmatory factor analysis. Neither factor significantly predicted any of the
