Streak retinoscopy was performed by 5 ophthalmologists on 256 eyes (191 dogs) to determine their postoperative refractive state after cataract extraction. Aphakic and pseudophakic eyes that had been implanted with 1 of 5 intraocular lenses (IOL) with dioptric powers ranging from +14.5 to +38 diopters (D) were studied. By use of ANOVA, breed and body type of dog and individual performing refraction were found to have no detectable effect on final refractive state. In this laboratory study, we used five different corneal trephines on 60 fresh human donor eyes with controlled intraocular pressure to study the variation in the size and shape of the trephine openings. Formulas created to predict the optical requirements of the aphakic eye have been tested mainly in adult eyes. The accuracy of these formulas in shorter pediatric aphakic eyes was examined using retrospective analysis of 17 aphakic pediatric patients. Gas injected through the pupil to tamponade a detached retina in a pseudophakic eye inadvertently made its way beneath the retina and augmented the detachment. A transparent membrane posterior to an iris-supported lens prevented the gas from entering the vitreous and diverted it laterally behind the iris, to the ciliary body, where is dissected between layers of ciliary epithelium and entered the subretinal space.

The effect of pupil size on ultrasonically determined anterior-chamber depth was studied in vitro with the Storz Alpha 20/20 and with the Kretz ultrasonoscope at high and low system sensitivity. The traces were measured peak to peak and base to base; results were compared to anterior-chamber depth measurements with optical pachymetry. We conclude that when measuring anterior-chamber depth with ultrasound, the pupil must be fully dilated or reduced system sensitivity must be used and the traces measured peak to peak.
