Cystic lesions of the posterior fossa remain a controversial subject as to clinical classification and diagnosis, especially for those in combination with other intracranial abnormalities. During the period of November 1985 to June 1991, 16 patients with cystic lesions of the posterior fossa were retrospectively reviewed on neuroradiological evaluation with MR images. The patients were 9 males and 7 females aged from 5 days to 15 years old (medium 1 year old). They were classified into three groups as Dandy-Walker cyst (group A, 5 patients), mega cisterna magna (group B, 4) and retrocerebellar

Brain tumors represent the second most frequent etiology in patients with focal seizure onset before 18 years of age and submitted to epilepsy surgery. Hence, this category of brain tumors, herein defined as low-grade, developmental, epilepsy-associated brain tumors (LEAT) is different from those frequently encountered in adults as (A): 77% of LEAT occur in the temporal lobe; (B): the vast majority of LEAT are of low malignancy and classified as WHO I°; (C): LEAT are often composed of mixed glial and neuronal cell components and present with variable growth patterns including small cysts or no

PURPOSE: To evaluate any possible advantages of high-concentration gadolinium chelates in the human brain thin-slice MR.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-six patients were allocated into six groups. Three groups had perfusion imaging performed using 7-mm-thick slices and the other three groups had 4-mm-thick slices. One group who had 7-mm slices and one group of 4-mm slices had 0.5 M gadolinium (20 ml) whilst other groups received the high-concentration gadolinium (1.0 M: 10 ml and 20 ml). The time-intensity curves were analysed for maximum signal reduction and signal-to-noise measurements.

Enlargement of the caudal sac with bony erosions of the spinal vertebrae may be a late sequel of ankylosing spondylitis. CT scans demonstrate typical changes. We report a case with spinal claudication and a neuropathic ulcer.

Clinical analyses of ten cases of infratentorial retrocerebellar cysts were performed in order to define specific signs or symptoms and thus improve the preoperative diagnosis. There were not symptoms or signs specific for the cysts. When a tumor in the posterior fossa is suspected by ventriculography, vertebral angiography or pneumoencephalography should be performed to exclude the possibility of a cyst, particularly in patients under 20 years of age. Care should also be taken to look for supratentorial cysts, since multiple cysts are found occassionally. It is necessary to evaluate the thera

A 67-year-old woman presented with recurrent transient ischaemic attack-like episodes over a 2 year period. Nodular enhancing leptomeningeal changes were detected on MRI and were consistent with meningeal rheumatoid nodules on biopsy. The patient's nodular disease continued to progress and regress clinically and radiologically irrespective of disease modifying agents and peripheral and serological rheumatoid arthritis control. This patient's unique presentation and diagnostic work-up is discussed alongside the dilemma of therapeutic management of meningeal rheumatoid nodules.

A unique case of a large intradiploic abscess involving posterior fossa osseous structures is reported. A 16-year-old boy presented with a hard mass in the calvarium of posterior fossa region, fever and confusion. Radiological examination revealed an intradiploic collection with compression to cerebellum, fourth ventricle and brain stem, resulting in syringomyelia in cervical and thoracic spinal cord. After drainage and resection of the abscess wall, closure of a round dural defect was performed. The medical history of the patient and the intraoperative observations support the contention that

Leptomeningeal cyst as a rare complication of skull fracture in children is well documented. Most cases occur months or years after the original skull fracture, with characteristic roentgenogram findings. The authors report two cases of leptomeningeal cysts in children less than two years old. The association of hygroma, severe brain injury, increased ICP, and early development of leptomeningeal cyst are discussed. Both patients sustained parietal diastatic skull fracture and developed external brain herniation within 10 days after motor vehicle accidents. Clinically they presented with seizur

To our knowledge, there is no reported case of visual disturbance associated with a nontraumatic orbital leptomeningeal cyst in the literature. We report the first such case and discuss the differential diagnosis of cystic lesions of the meninges that may be found on the surface of the brain.

Sensorimotor functions were examined in a patient with left-sided infantile hemiparesis who underwent hemispherectomy (HS) on the right side at age 18 for intractable epilepsy. Pathological examination of the removed hemisphere showed a porencephalic cyst of the temporal lobe and of the frontoparietal operculum. On examination, the patient had hemianopia to the left and sensorimotor deficits only of the distal limbs contralateral to the HS. She walked with a barely perceptible limp. Axial and proximal movements were quasi normal, so that the patient could fully elevate both arms, flex and exte

Two children with congenital ocular motor apraxia (C-OMA) associated with congenital malformations of the central nervous system (CNS) are presented, and the literature is reviewed. C-OMA is an abnormality of ocular motility characterized by defective or absent voluntary horizontal gaze, associated with a characteristic head thrust. Although not rare, it is infrequently recognized. C-OMA is not a specific disease entity, but a sign. It may be associated with other static congenital CNS disorders and must be distinguished from acquired ocular motor apraxias (A-OMA) seen in progressive brain dis

Tne cases of growing fractures seen in the last 10 years are presented. Six of the patients sustained their injury within the first six months of life. The defects formed rapidly, several within two or three months after injury. There was enlargement of the defect in only one case after the date of discovery. Although the defects involved the parietal bone most commonly, in four out of 10 the lesion crossed either the coronal or the lambdoid suture. The edges of the defects were usually thickened; in some areas they were saucer-shaped but in two cases there was erosion of the outer table of th

INTRODUCTION: Neurological infections often present with diverse symptoms, making coinfections particularly challenging. This study highlights an unusual case of dual coinfections caused by brucellosis and aspergillosis, emphasizing the complexity and severity of such infections.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old Syrian male patient with a history of adequately treated systemic brucellosis 3 years prior, presented with a 6-month history of progressive bilateral hearing loss, lower limb weakness, and intermittent incontinence. Neurological examination revealed bilateral sensorineural hearing lo

T-box pituitary restricted transcription factor is a transcription factor required for proopiomelanocortin (POMC) gene expression and pituitary corticotroph cell differentiation and is encoded by T-box factor 19 (TBX19). Variants in TBX19 cause early onset congenital isolated adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) insufficiency with a mortality rate of up to 25% in the neonatal period. Mild dysmorphic findings may accompany some cases. Here, we report a case of isolated ACTH deficiency due to a TBX19 variant diagnosed in the neonatal period, who was followed up until adulthood. The male patient h

Facial nerve palsy (FNP) may arise from multiple etiological reasons, including anatomical anomalies, circulatory complications, and infectious agents. This case series underscores the importance of a comprehensive diagnostic approach to identify the precise etiology, including structural abnormalities, vascular anomalies, or infectious illnesses. Here, we present three distinct occurrences of FNP, emphasizing the varied diagnostic difficulties and therapeutic strategies. It includes an arachnoid cyst, which when occurring at the cerebellopontine angle can affect multiple cranial nerves, speci

BACKGROUND: Paraplegia after lumbar spinal surgery has been previously described. It was generally provoked by a missed thoracic compression because of degenerative processes, arachnoid cyst, and spinal cord tumor such as meningioma. We describe here a case of a patient with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF-2) with multiple spinal meningiomas that developed postoperative paraplegia because of decompensation of spinal cord compression below and far from the operated level.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 54-year-old woman with NF-2 was followed-up for multiple spinal meningiomas (C7-T1, T6-7, T9-10 levels). S

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus papillomas are rare, accounting for less than 1% of all intracranial tumours in adults. However, they are relatively more common in childhood and constitute 1.5 to 4% of intracranial tumours. They are most often located in the lateral ventricle, followed by the fourth and third ventricles and, rarely, in the cerebellopontine angle. Bilateral lateral ventricle choroid plexus papilloma is very rare and only a few cases has been reported.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 3-year-old boy was admitted to our hospital with a history of irritability and vomiting. Neurological exami
