Iatrogenic Femoral Neuropathy Mimicking Meralgia Paresthetica Following Groin Flap Surgery: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Groin flap surgery carries a risk of iatrogenic nerve injury, most commonly involving the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve and presenting as meralgia paresthetica. In contrast, femoral nerve injury is rare and typically associated with motor deficits. Pure sensory femoral neuropathy is exceptionally uncommon and may closely mimic meralgia paresthetica, creating a diagnostic challenge. CASE REPORT: We report a 24-year-old man who developed severe neuropathic pain over the anterolateral thigh following groin flap donor-site closure. Initial clinical suspicion was meralgia paresthetic

Compression neuropathy caused by cancer metastasis to the optic nerve canal.

BACKGROUND: Cancerous cells are known to metastasize to different ocular structures. This happens especially to the choroid in males with lung cancer and females with breast cancer. However, we observed two cases of cancerous metastasis to the optic canal region. Both cases showed only a progressive decrease in vision without any other remarkable ophthalmological symptoms or abnormalities in the affected eye. CASE PRESENTATION: Two females, a 60-year-old and a 73-year-old, came to our hospital because of progressive loss of vision. These patients showed no remarkable symptoms or signs in thei

Prevention and management of limb contractures in neuromuscular diseases.

Limb contractures are a common impairment in neuromuscular diseases. They contribute to increased disability from decreased motor performance, mobility limitations, reduced functional range of motion, loss of function for activities of daily living, and increased pain. The pathogenesis of contractures is multifactorial. Myopathic conditions are associated with more severe limb contractures compared with neuropathic disorders. Although the evidence supporting the efficacy of multiple interventions to improve range of motion in neuromuscular diseases in a sustained manner is lacking, there are g

Familial or genetic primary aldosteronism and Gordon syndrome.

Salt-sensitive forms of hypertension have received considerable renewed attention in recent years. This article focuses on 2 main forms of salt-sensitive hypertension (familial or genetic primary aldosteronism [PA] and Gordon syndrome) and the current state of knowledge regarding their genetic bases. The glucocorticoid-remediable form of familial PA (familial hyperaldosteronism type I) is dealt with only briefly because it is covered in depth elsewhere.

[Specification of corresponding growth laws of Hueter-Volkmann and Pauwels (growth deformities) and their relation to deformities caused by loading].

Intermittent pressure within the limits of physiological stress and strain stimulates the growth plates of a healthy bone (Pauwels), whereas a constant pathological strong pressure does inhibit the enchondral longitudinal growth (Hueter-Volkmann). An active change of direction of growth is induced if the pressure is exerted excentrically: growth deformities. In the presence of a diseased weak bone asymmetrical pressure leads to passive bending of bone: weight bearing deformities. An attempt is made to support these distinctions by experimental and clinical observations.

Systematic analysis of homozygous autosomal copy number losses in exomes improves diagnostic yield and uncovers ultra-rare recessive disorders.

Systematic analysis of copy number variants (CNVs) in large datasets is challenging and there are limited studies of homozygous copy number losses in rare disease exome datasets. Here we leveraged the genomic uniqueness and relative under-representation of the Indian population in the current public genomic databases and identified 42,386 possible homozygous losses (median count 20 per individual, range 0 - 55; median size 2.95 kb, range 99 bp - 4.76 Mb) in a heterogeneous cohort of 2,021 individuals with suspected Mendelian disorders, who had undergone exome sequencing using 12 different capt

Time of diagnosis of congenital upper limb anomalies: a cohort study of 703 patients from a local registry in Norway.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Several European countries offer nationwide prenatal ultrasound screening for fetal anomalies. Few studies have examined prenatal detection of upper limb anomalies, and existing reports originate exclusively from high‑volume centers outside Europe. We aimed to assess the timing of diagnosis in patients with all Oberg-Manske-Tonkin diagnoses except tumorous dysplasias referred to the largest specialized unit in Norway, investigate prenatal detection rates, and explore associations between patient‑ and hospital‑related factors and prenatal detection. METHODS: We extracte

Extension of the phenotypic spectrum of GLE1-related disorders to a mild congenital form resembling congenital myopathy.

BACKGROUND: GLE1 (GLE1, RNA Export Mediator, OMIM#603371) variants are associated with severe autosomal recessive motor neuron diseases, that are lethal congenital contracture syndrome 1 (LCCS1, OMIM#253310) and congenital arthrogryposis with anterior horn cell disease (CAAHD, OMIM#611890). The clinical spectrum of GLE1-related disorders has been expanding these past years, including with adult-onset amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) GLE1-related forms, especially through the new molecular diagnosis strategies associated with the emergence of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies. Generation of a Recombinant Akabane Virus Expressing Enhanced Green Fluorescent Protein.

UNLABELLED: We generated a recombinant Akabane virus (AKAV) expressing enhanced green fluorescence protein (eGFP-AKAV) by using reverse genetics. We artificially constructed an ambisense AKAV S genome encoding N/NSs on the negative-sense strand, and eGFP on the positive-sense strand with an intergenic region (IGR) derived from the Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) S genome. The recombinant virus exhibited eGFP fluorescence and had a cytopathic effect in cell cultures, even after several passages. These results indicate that the gene encoding eGFP in the ambisense RNA could be stably maintained. T

Complications incidence in the treatment of early onset scoliosis with growing spinal implants.

Early onset scoliosis (EOS) surgery based on growing spinal implants can lead to several complications. Aim of the study was to identify strategies to prevent those complications. A retrospective review was conducted to identify all pediatric patients affected by EOS surgically treated with growing rod or Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Rib (VEPTR) at our division between 2006 and 2011. Nineteen consecutive patients (8 males, 11 females; mean age 6.8 years) were included. The scoliosis was: idiopathic in 7 cases, congenital in 5, associated with congenital heart disease in 2, with syri

[Antibodies in myasthenia gravis].

In autoimmune myasthenia gravis, 75 to 80% of patients have antiacetylcholine receptor antibodies (anti-AChR abs) quantified by immunoprecipitation. Anti-AChR abs are polyclonal, directed against all AChR subunits, with a major fraction against the main immunogenic region, (alpha-subunit, aminoacids 67-76); they cause AChR loss by three mechanisms: blocking of acetylcholine binding; accelerated degradation or AChR due to bridging of two adjacent AChR molecules (antigenic modulation); lysis of postsynaptic membrane induced by complement. Neither anti-AChR ab level nor antigenic repertoire are c

The phenotype of the Gly94fsX222 PMP22 insertion.

Point mutations in PMP22 are relatively rare and the phenotype may vary from mild hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP) to severe Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1 (CMT1). We describe the phenotype of the Gly94fsX222 mutation in the PMP22 gene. Medical records of all patients were reviewed and 11 patients were re-examined. EMG was carried out in nine patients and nerve biopsy in one. Thirteen patients originating from seven families with a Gly94fsX222 mutation were included and consisted of 10 women and 3 men with a median age of 41 years (range 7-67). Five index patients we
