BACKGROUND: Neoscytalidium species (formerly Scytalidium species) are black fungi that usually cause cutaneous infections mimicking dermatophytes lesions. Very few publications have reported invasive or disseminated infections.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this paper, we report the clinical presentations, treatments and outcomes of five cases of invasive Neoscytalidium infections with cutaneous involvement, including two cases with disseminated infection, in five renal transplant recipients. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a series-albeit small-of renal transplant patients in whom this

Plant-derived compounds are emerging as an alternative choice to synthetic fungicides. Chloroform-methanol extract, obtained from the bark of Zanthoxylum rhoifolium, a member of Rutaceae, showed a fungistatic effect on Botrytis cinerea, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Alternaria alternata, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Clonostachys rosea, when added to the growth medium at different concentrations. A fraction obtained by gel separation and containing the alkaloid O-Methylcapaurine showed significant fungistatic effect against B. cinerea and S. sclerotiorum, two of the most destructive phytopath

Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic subcutaneous mycosis caused by dematiaceous fungi. Fonsecaea monophora, a new species segregated from F. pedrosoi, may be the most prevalent pathogen of chromoblastomycosis in southern China. Herein, we report a rare case of chromoblastomycosis in a man with nephritic syndrome. He presented with an asymptomatic red plaque on the back of his left wrist that had appeared and enlarged over a period of 1.5 years, without any prior trauma. He was initially diagnosed with sporotrichosis. However, he did not respond to a 6-month course of potassium iodide treatment. T

Evolution of resistance to drugs and pesticides poses a serious threat to human health and agricultural production. CYP51 encodes the target site of azole fungicides, widely used clinically and in agriculture. Azole resistance can evolve due to point mutations or overexpression of CYP51, and previous studies have shown that fungicide-resistant alleles have arisen by de novo mutation. Paralogs CYP51A and CYP51B are found in filamentous ascomycetes, but CYP51A has been lost from multiple lineages. Here, we show that in the barley pathogen Rhynchosporium commune, re-emergence of CYP51A constitute

Chromoblastomycosis is one of the most frequently encountered mycoses in tropical and temperate regions caused by the implantation of the infectious structures and one which is associated with low cure and high relapse rates. The etiologic agents play a critical role affecting clinical outcome and in southern China, Fonsecaea pedrosoi and F. monophora are the main causative agents of chromoblastomycosis. We treated, for two years, a 55-year-old male patient with chromoblastomycosis caused by F. monophora with itraconazole and terbinafine, two antifungals recommend in earlier papers in the lite

Members of the fungal genus Fonsecaea causing human chromoblastomycosis show substantial geographic structuring. Genetic identity of clinical and environmental strains suggests transmission from plant debris, while the evolutionary processes that have led to spatially separated populations have remained unexplained. Sequences of ITS, BT2, ACT1, Cdc42, Lac and HmgA were analyzed, either by direct sequencing or by cloning. Thirty-seven clinical and environmental Fonsecaea strains from Central and South America, Asia, Africa and Europe were sequenced and possible recombination events were calcula

Several studies have demonstrated that proteins homologous to the Alt a 1 major allergen of Alternaria alternata are expressed in other members of the Pleosporaceae family. However, since no direct biochemical data have been reported concerning the presence of Alt a 1 allergen homologues capable of binding IgE in the excretion-secretion products of Stemphylium and Ulocladium, our objective was to explore their presence in Stemphylium botryosum and Ulocladium botrytis. S. botryosum and U. botrytis culture filtrate extracts were analyzed by two-dimensional (2D)-electrophoresis and 2D-immunoblott

We report a case of chromoblastomycosis which resembled sporotrichosis due to the presence of warty nodules and lymphatic distribution on the forearm in a 56-year-old male. Mycological and histopathological investigation of exudates and biopsy tissue samples revealed a granulomatous lesion with muriform cells, the hallmark of chromoblastomycosis. The infection showed only localized expansion with verrucous plaques suggesting a new clinical type of the disease. The causative agent was identified as Rhinocladiella aquaspersa. This case prompted a study of the clinical spectrum of R. aquaspersa,

Scopulariopsis (S.) brevicaulis (Saccardo) Bainier 1907 is a ubiquitous fungus frequently isolated as a saprophyte from various layers of the soil, wood, straw, paper, food, and occasionally in animals and humans. This nondermatophyte filamentous fungus is multiresistant and is frequently associated with onychomycosis in humans. In the last two decades, the number of reports on its pathogenic role in different localized and disseminated infections has been on an increase. Identification was done by native KOH microscopy and culture on the Mycobios selective agar (Biolife). From January 1, 2002

Forty-seven bronchoalveolar lavage fluid samples from 16 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients were used to test the latency model of Pneumocystis infection in the human host. Identification of DNA sequence polymorphisms at 4 independent loci were used to genotype Pneumocystis jiroveci from the 35 samples that contained detectable P. jiroveci DNA. Eighteen of those 35 samples came from patients who did not have Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) and had confirmed alternative diagnoses. Seven patients had asymptomatic carriage of P. jiroveci over periods of < or = 9.5 months after an e

Overuse of chemical pesticides motivates green disease control strategy. Levan-derived oligosaccharides (LOS) are immune elicitors, but its structure information and underlying regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, LOS produced from sucrose using LevB1SacB fusion enzyme, was purified by CSR-1Na resin, and characterized by HPLC, ATR-FTIR and 1D/2D NMR. Foliar LOS spraying (0.5‰) enhanced barley resistance to Rhizoctonia solani and Pyrenophora graminea, reducing necrotic area by 60.5% and 22.4%, but had little effect on the hemibiotrophic pathogen Bipolaris sorokiniana of spot blo

In this study, the antifungal activities of essential oil, supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO₂) extract, methanol extract, and SC-CO₂+ethanol extract obtained from Thymbra spicata L. were evaluated in vitro against the soilborne fungal pathogens Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Macrophomina sp., Rhizoctonia solani, and Fusarium oxysporum, which cause substantial economic losses in cultivated plants. The chemical profiles of the extracts were determined using GC-MS. Carvacrol and p-cymene were identified as the major constituents of the SC-CO₂ and SC-CO₂+ethanol extracts, accounting for 86.79% and 4.

To develop eco-friendly succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors with good fungicidal activity, various diaryl-substituted thiazole-2-carboxamide derivatives were designed and synthesized based on structure-activity relationships (SARs) and molecular docking. At 20 mg/L, most target compounds exhibited ≥80% inhibition against Valsa mali, Botrytis cinerea, Curvularia lunata, and Phytophthora capsici. Notably, compound G33 showed potent activity against B. cinerea (EC50 = 0.17 mg/L) and P. capsici (EC50 = 0.42 mg/L), outperforming commercial fungicides thifluzamide and boscalid. At 100 mg/L, G33 effec
