PURPOSE: A review of the literature about micronutrients status of Ile-de-France inhabitants.
CURRENT KNOWLEDGE AND KEY POINTS: During the last decades, substantial changes in the French diet had an impact on micronutrients intake. Over this time, several studies conducted in Ile-de-France showed that a large part of its inhabitants is subject to an increased risk of mild to severe deficiency in one or more micronutrient(s). Teenagers and subjects over 70 years-old are groups at risk for vitamin D deficiency. During the 1980s, iron intake was insufficient in a majority of menstruating women a

Providing with thiamine and the content of ascorbic acid (AA) were studied in 250 male rats with respect to their age and depending on the duration of physical load. In all age groups (from 1 to 1.5 months, from 6 to 12 months and over 12 months) the physical load (swimming) led to a decrease of the body providing with thiamine, that was expressed in the reduction of its content in the blood and liver, in the lowering of transketolase activity and rising of the TDP effect. These changes were more pronounced at the early age and directly depended on the duration of physical load. Physical load

Scurvy is still seen sporadically in the developed world. Scurvy, a dietary disease due to the deficient intake of vitamin C, is uncommon in the pediatric population. Scurvy occurs as a result of decreased vitamin C consumption or absorption. We present the case of a 6-year-old boy visiting our department with bleeding gums, musculoskeletal pain, and weakness. Four days after starting oral vitamin C supplementation, there was significant improvement in the patient's gingival appearance and general health. The clinical presentation and laboratory investigation (Hemoglobin %, total blood picture

A corticostriatal-dependent deficit in the release of ascorbate (AA), an antioxidant vitamin and neuromodulator, occurs concurrently in striatum with dysfunctional GLT1-dependent uptake of glutamate in the R6/2 mouse model of Huntington's disease (HD), an autosomal dominant condition characterized by overt corticostriatal dysfunction. To determine if deficient striatal AA release into extracellular fluid is related to altered GLT1 activity in HD, symptomatic R6/2 mice between 6 and 9 weeks of age and age-matched wild-type (WT) mice received single daily injections of 200 mg/kg ceftriaxone, a β

Ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency is a human genetic disease potentially susceptible to gene therapy. A murine model system exists for the disease in the sparse-fur (spf) mouse. Before gene therapy studies can be performed it is necessary to have practical methods which could detect successful gene transfer. Therefore we have developed an in situ staining procedure for the detection of ornithine transcarbamylase activity in polyacrylamide gels. Following electrophoretic separation under nondenaturing conditions inorganic phosphate cleaved from carbamyl phosphate in gels as a result of enzy

Iron deficiency is the most frequently encountered cause of suboptimal response to recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO). Carefully assessing iron status is of paramount importance in chronic renal failure patients prior to or during rHuEPO therapy. Because there is great need for iron in the EPO-stimulated erythroid progenitors, it is essential that serum ferritin and transferrin saturation levels should be maintained over 300 microg/liter and 30%, respectively. Investigators have shown that oral iron is unlikely to keep pace with the iron demand for an optimal rHuEPO response in uremics.

In conclusion we may state that a borderline vitamin deficiency exists in many population groups as well as in single persons even in industrialized countries. The reason for this fact is mainly the low education which is often associated with a low socioeconomic status and certain food patterns which derive from tradition, emotion or from other reasons not yet well understood. We have proved that the avoidance of pork and whole-wheat bread leads to a borderline vitamin B1 deficiency and the avoidance of citrus fruits, fruits, vegetables, viscera and potatoes to a broderline vitamin C deficien

Clinical signs of various nutritional deficiencies for 429 adults were compared by race, age, and sex. The nutrients studied were vitamin A, riboflavin, vitamin C, vitamin D, and calcium. The prevalence of clinical signs of deficiency for all nutrients was much higher in blacks than in whites. Clinical lesions due to multiple nutrient deficiencies showed the same racial difference. Men had a higher prevalence of clinical signs for all nutrient deficiencies, except for vitamin A, that did the young. The racial and age differences in the nutritional status may be explained by the difference of e

BACKGROUND: Deficient ascorbic acid levels (AALs) and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are associated with periodontal disease. This study evaluated the relationship between plasma AAL and periodontitis in systemically healthy and T2DM subjects, which to the best of our knowledge is being reported for the first time.
METHODS: One hundred twenty subjects were categorized into four groups of 30 each as group 1: without periodontal disease; group 2: chronic gingivitis; group 3: chronic periodontitis, and group 4: chronic periodontitis and freshly diagnosed T2DM. Plaque index (PlI), sulcus bleedin

Previous short-term supplementation studies showed no additional hematologic benefit of multiple micronutrients (MMN) compared with iron + folic acid (IFA) in adolescent girls. This study examines whether long-term once- or twice-weekly supplementation of MMN can improve hemoglobin (Hb) and micronutrient status more than twice-weekly IFA supplementation in anemic adolescent girls in Bangladesh. Anemic girls (n = 324) aged 11-17 y attending rural schools were given once- or twice-weekly MMN or twice-weekly IFA, containing 60 mg iron/dose in both supplements, for 52 wk in a randomized double-bli

1. Hypovitaminotic C guinea-pigs fed on a high-cholesterol diet for 5 weeks developed gallstones (810 mg cholesterol/g) whereas no concretements were observed in vitamin C-replete animals. 2. Scanning electron microscope studies of the three types of gallstone observed in the gallbladders of vitamin C-deficient animals showed them to be composed of randomly-arranged needle-shaped or laminated crystal of cholesterol. 3. The hepatic bile of gallstone-forming animals had a higher cholesterol concentration and lower bile acid content, the latter being principally due to a reduction in the chenodeo

The transport systems of animal and human tissues for vitamin C are reviewed with respect to their properties. It emerges that pure diffusion plays only a very minor role while a variety of more or less specific transporters is found on cellular membranes. Although most tissues prefer the reduced ascorbate over the oxidized dehydroascorbic acid and have high-affinity transporters for it, there are several examples for the reversed situation. Special attention is given to similarity or identity with glucose transporters, especially the GLUT-1 and the sodium-dependent intestinal and renal transp

The hydrosoluble vitamins are a group of organic substances that are required by humans in small amounts to prevent disorders of metabolism. Significant progress has been made in our understanding of the biochemical, physiologic and nutritional aspects of the water-soluble vitamins. Deficiency of these particular vitamins, most commonly due to inadequate nutrition, can result in disorders of the nervous system. Many of these disorders have been successfully prevented in developed countries; however, they are still common in developing countries. Of the hydrosoluble vitamins, the nervous system
