Scorpions maintenance in captivity for venom extraction purposes in Costa Rica.

Approximately 2 000 scorpion species can be found around the world; although few species are considered “harmful” to human beings, a high number of scorpionism cases are reported all over the world. The elaboration of anti-scorpion sera requires the establishment of an animal collection maintained in captivity for venom extraction purposes. The Clodomiro Picado Institute (ICP, for its acronym in Spanish), poses a vast trajectory in manufacturing snakebite antivenoms, and starts a scorpion collection in 2005 for this purpose. In total, 2 043 scorpions were classified in 11 species and collected

Biomechanical evaluation of lumbar pedicle screws in spondylolytic vertebrae: comparison of fixation strength between the traditional trajectory and a cortical bone trajectory.

OBJECTIVE In the management of isthmic spondylolisthesis, the pedicle screw system is widely accepted surgical strategy; however, there are few reports on the biomechanical behavior of pedicle screws in spondylolytic vertebrae. The purpose of the present study was to compare fixation strength between pedicle screws inserted through the traditional trajectory (TT) and those inserted through a cortical bone trajectory (CBT) in spondylolytic vertebrae by computational simulation. METHODS Finite element models of spondylolytic and normal vertebrae were created from CT scans of 17 patients with adu

Electron transfer kinetics in CdS nanorod-[FeFe]-hydrogenase complexes and implications for photochemical H₂ generation.

This Article describes the electron transfer (ET) kinetics in complexes of CdS nanorods (CdS NRs) and [FeFe]-hydrogenase I from Clostridium acetobutylicum (CaI). In the presence of an electron donor, these complexes produce H2 photochemically with quantum yields of up to 20%. Kinetics of ET from CdS NRs to CaI play a critical role in the overall photochemical reactivity, as the quantum efficiency of ET defines the upper limit on the quantum yield of H2 generation. We investigated the competitiveness of ET with the electron relaxation pathways in CdS NRs by directly measuring the rate and quant

Finite element modeling of the influence of hand position and bone properties on the Colles' fracture load during a fall.

Distal forearm fracture is one of the most frequently observed osteoporotic fractures, which may occur as a result of low energy falls such as falls from a standing height and may be linked to the osteoporotic nature of the bone, especially in the elderly. In order to prevent the occurrence of radius fractures and their adverse outcomes, understanding the effect of both extrinsic and intrinsic contributors to fracture risk is essential. In this study, a nonlinear fracture mechanics-based finite element model is applied to human radius to assess the influence of extrinsic factors (load orientat

Barriers to sun safety in a Canadian outpatient population.

BACKGROUND: It has long been recognized that compliance with recommended sun safety practices is suboptimal, yet few investigations have explored the barriers that people face in practicing good sun safety. In this context, barriers can exist at the following three levels: knowledge of sun safety, acquisition of sun safety information, and implementation of specific sun protective measures. OBJECTIVE: The investigation reported herein sought to elucidate barriers to sun safety that individuals face. Ultimately, this study aimed to qualify the possible barriers that lead to a misalignment of c

[Endourologic treatment of transitional cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract].

Nephrourete-rectomy with excision of a bladder cuff has been the standard treatment of the upper urinary tract transitional cell carcinoma. The very indolent behavior (GI, II, Ta, T1) of more than 50% and up to 82% of the upper urinary tract tumors treated with nephroureterectomy in different series in conjunction with the advent of sophisticated endourological techniques have permitted in certain cases alternative treatments using a conservative approach with either ureteropyeloscopy or percutaneous access. Ureteroscopy is reserved for ureteral tumors and small, simple tumors of the renal pel

The ascending serotonergic system in the hamster: comparison with projections of the dorsal and median raphe nuclei.

The ascending serotonergic projections are derived largely from the midbrain median and dorsal raphe nuclei, and contribute to the regulation of many behavioral and physiological systems. Serotonergic innervation of the hamster circadian system has been shown to be substantially different from earlier results obtained with other methods and species. The present study was conducted to determine whether similar differences are observed in other brain regions. Ascending projections from the hamster dorsal or median raphe were identified using an anterograde tracer, Phaseolus vulgans leucoagglutin

Beneficial effects of electro-acupuncture treatment in photothrombotic ischemia model rats by remodeling neurovascular unit.

BACKGROUND: Electro-acupuncture (EA) treatment at LI11 (Quchi) and ST36 (Zusanli) acupoints promotes functional recovery after ischemia in animal trials. However, the possible mechanism responsible for neurovascular unit (NVU) in ischemic stroke remains elusive. The study aimed to investigate the protective effects of EA on angiogenesis and neurovascular unit in a rat model of photothrombotic ischemia (PTI). METHODS: Ischemic stroke was generated via Rose Bengal - photothrombosis in rat motor cortex and EA treatment started at 24 h after the PTI operation, continued for 7 days until animals w

Emotion-Adaptive Large Language Model-Driven Clinical Decision Support: User Evaluation of the Empathic Clinical Decision Support System Framework for Trust and Explainability.

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of cannabis use has motivated researchers to develop computational behavioral models that predict usage patterns and related health impacts in naturalistic environments. However, the opaque nature of many artificial intelligence (AI) systems limits users' ability to interpret outputs and undermines trust. Existing explainable artificial intelligence techniques often remain overly technical and do not account for the confusion or frustration clinicians may experience when interpreting complex model explanations. OBJECTIVE: We propose and evaluate an empath

From passive monitoring to active engagement: a systematic review and meta-analysis of digital health technologies for improving objective physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity is a critical factor exacerbating obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and its associated comorbidities. Previous evidence has largely relied on subjective questionnaires, leading to a lack of definitive evidence based on objective measurements. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the effects of digital health interventions (DHIs) on objective physical activity, body composition, and sleep parameters in OSA patients, while further exploring the efficacy differences between active intervention and passive monitoring modes. METHODS: A systematic search was condu

Glycemic control and its associated factors among adult diabetic patients in Southern Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is a group of common metabolic disorders that share the phenotype of hyperglycemia. Chronic hyperglycemia causes vascular complications, mortality, and life-threatening disabilities in low-income countries including Ethiopia. Glycemic control status in diabetic patients is crucial to maintain the blood glucose level at the optimal level and to reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications and mortality. However, there is limited data on poor glycemic control status and its associated factors among diabetic patients in southern Ethiopia, particularly in the stu

Using Biosensors and Digital Biomarkers to Assess Response to Cardiac Rehabilitation: Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is known for its beneficial effects on functional capacity and is a key component within current cardiovascular disease management strategies. In addition, a larger increase in functional capacity is accompanied by better clinical outcomes. However, not all patients respond in a similar way to CR. Therefore, a patient-tailored approach to CR could open up the possibility to achieve an optimal increase in functional capacity in every patient. Before treatment can be optimized, the differences in response of patients in terms of cardiac adaptation to exerc

Dexmedetomidine improves sleep quality and alleviates emotional dysfunction by attenuating α-synuclein deposition in mice with sepsis-associated encephalopathy.

INTRODUCTION: Most septic patients have severe sleep disorders that are closely related to poor prognoses, and some patients with sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) experience severe cerebral inflammatory reactions similar to those in neurodegenerative disease. α-synuclein, a widely expressed synaptic protein whose abnormal deposition can lead to neurodegenerative diseases, was also observed to be deposited abnormally in an SAE mouse model. OBJECTIVES: Sleep disorders are common in SAE patients and are strongly associated with prognoses. Our aim is to clarify sleep architecture changes, i
