The purpose of this study was to examine factors related to the outcome of naturalistically treated panic disorder. In order to achieve this we followed up 69 patients 7 years after they had presented at a psychiatric clinic. At follow-up, the patients were generally doing well despite persisting symptoms. Patients who were more severely ill at the time of initial assessment had a worse outcome. The participants were 111 Kuwaiti boys and girls and 59 mothers assessed in 1993 and 2003 to determine exposure to war-related trauma during the Iraqi occupation and subsequent psychological distress. OBJECTIVE: Research has demonstrated high comorbidity between asthma and panic disorder (PD). Less is known about the relationship between asthma and the Latino cultural idiom of distress of ataques de nervios, as well as the role that psychosocial stressors play. The current study tested the hypotheses that Latino asthma patients who experience PD, ataques de nervios, and/or asthma-related death of a loved one endorse greater psychological triggers of asthma, greater perceived impact of asthma triggers, and greater difficulty controlling such triggers than do those without these conditions.
