BACKGROUND: This case report documents the affliction of the lymph vessels as a phenotypic feature of neurofibromatosis-1 (NF-1).
METHODOLOGY: Routine transthoracic echocardiography, computed tomography scan of the thorax, magnetic resonance angiography of the renal arteries, and conventional digital subtraction angiography were applied. Comprehensive NF-1 mutation analysis was carried out by fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis, long-range reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, and multiple-ligation probe assay. All other investigations were performed using routine, well-est

We evaluated the results of patients with Gustilo types II, IIIA and IIIB open tibial fractures managed early with the Ilizarov external fixator (IEF). Sixty patients (51 males, nine females; age range 20-62 years; mean age 32.8 years) with type II (11 patients), type IIIA (13) and type IIIB (36) tibial diaphyseal fractures underwent emergency debridement and minimal bone fixation (with external fixator), followed by definite fixation with the IEF after three to five days. Average duration of the hospital stay was 8.6 days. All fractures united with an average union time of 21.1 weeks (standar

BACKGROUND: Managing refractory osteomyelitis around the ankle joint has been challenging. Destruction of both the ankle and the subtalar joints was common in cases of open fracture. For those who already had multiple surgeries, it would be tough to salvage the limb. Our goal was to set up a staged surgical protocol aiming in treating the aforementioned clinical issue.
METHODS: Twelve male patients underwent our protocol since year 2000. All patients presented refractory osteomyelitis, ankle and subtalar joint destruction, and poor soft tissue condition. All cases had internal fixation for op

Malunion remains the most common complication following fracture of the distal radius. Deformities can be observed in all three planes with displacement in dorsal or palmar tilt, translation, shortening and axial rotation. Preoperative evaluation requires a comparative analysis with clinical, radiological and scanographic assessment. The functional consequences affect the radiocarpal and distal radio-ulnar joints and the carpus. Biomechanical aspects include changes in pressure forces on the distal radius and ulna, and displacement of the centers of rotation. If present, associated lesions sho

BACKGROUND: In total hip arthroplasty for the treatment of adult developmental dysplasia of the hip, there is considerable controversy regarding the placement of the acetabular cup, anatomic center, and upward in acetabular reconstruction. This article explores the efficacy of the anatomical center technique and high hip center technique in the treatment of adult developmental dysplasia of the hip.
METHOD: By searching for articles in the Cochrane Library, PubMed, CNKI, and Wanfang databases, we collected the literature on the treatment of adult developmental dysplasia of the hip by anatomica

BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) for high-grade developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is technically demanding, particularly when reconstruction of the true acetabulum requires substantial limb lengthening. Femoral shortening osteotomy is commonly necessary to facilitate safe reduction and minimize neurovascular complications. However, the optimal osteotomy level and technique are still debated.
METHODS: This was a retrospective case series of 117 THAs with femoral shortening osteotomy performed in 89 patients (28 bilateral) who had Hartofilakidis-type C DDH between 1997 and 2022 b

Spasticity arises from the exaggeration of the monosynaptic reflex, attributed to the loss of inhibitory influences from descending supraspinal structures, though not exclusively. Defined by its resistance to muscle stretching, spasticity yields two significant outcomes. Firstly, muscles tend to remain in a shortened position, restricting movement. Secondly, hypertonia, coupled with a lack of mobilization, leads to soft tissue changes, including a loss of viscoelasticity. This non-velocity-dependent biomechanical aspect limits movements, even at slow velocities, rendering them unresponsive to

INTRODUCTION: The varus and valgus knee deformities result from imbalance in tension between medial and lateral soft tissue compartments. These conditions need to be addressed during total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, there is no consensus on optimal soft-tissue release techniques for correcting varus and valgus deformities during TKA. We assessed the efficacy of a novel grid-based pie-crusting technique on soft-tissue release.
METHODS: Cadaver knees were dissected, leaving only the femur and tibia connected by an isolated MCL or the femur and fibula connected by an isolated LCL. Bone cu

Infantile tibia vara is a deformity of abrupt angulation into varus due to an affection of the postromedial aspect of the proximal tibial physis. The deformity often includes internal tibial torsion and limb length discrepancy. Gradual correction of the deformity is currently the treatment of choice for these challenging cases as it requires less invasive surgery, allows progressive and adjustable correction, permits bone lengthening if needed and achieves a more accurate correction compared to acute correction. Elevation of the depressed medial tibial condyle allows restoration of the joint a…

The porcine body length trait is an essential factor affecting meat production and reproductive performance. It is evident that the development/lengthening of individual vertebrae is one of the main reasons for increases in body length; however, the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. In this study, RNA-seq analysis was used to profile the transcriptome (lncRNA, mRNA, and miRNA) of the thoracic intervertebral cartilage (TIC) at two time points (1 and 4 months) during vertebral column development in Yorkshire (Y) and Wuzhishan pigs (W). There were four groups: 1- (Y1) and 4-month-ol

The approach to orthodontic diagnosis has changed gradually but steadily over the past 2 decades. The shift away from diagnosis based entirely on hard tissue evaluations has been a result of a broadened recognition of the importance of facial and smile appearance to our patients, and how they change over time. The purpose of this article is to describe and illustrate the integration of the new soft tissue paradigm into long-term treatment planning, with a focus on the esthetic goals of treatment.

In restoring periodontally involved hopeless teeth, implant treatment has been widely used with combinations of various grafting techniques or guided bone regeneration. Instead of traditional surgical procedures, forced tooth eruption may be used successfully for implant site development. In this case, the authors orthodontically erupted a hopeless central incisor with an angular bony defect. Subsequently, they placed an implant immediately after tooth extraction and immediately loaded it with a temporary resin restoration.
