Histological and histochemical analysis of the gastrointestinal tract of the common pipistrelle bat (Pipistrellus pipistrellus).

Bats have a very high mass-specific energy demand due to small size and active flight. European bat species are mostly insectivorous and the morphology of the gastrointestinal tract should be adapted accordingly. This study investigated the general anatomy by histology and the function by analysing carbohydrate distribution in particular of the mucus of the GI tract of the insectivorous bat Pipistrellus pipistrellus. The GI tracts of three individuals were dissected, fixed in formaldehyde, and embedded in paraffin wax. The tissues and cells of the GI tract of P. pipistrellus were analysed by c

A preliminary study of viral metagenomics of French bat species in contact with humans: identification of new mammalian viruses.

The prediction of viral zoonosis epidemics has become a major public health issue. A profound understanding of the viral population in key animal species acting as reservoirs represents an important step towards this goal. Bats harbor diverse viruses, some of which are of particular interest because they cause severe human diseases. However, little is known about the diversity of the global population of viruses found in bats (virome). We determined the viral diversity of five different French insectivorous bat species (nine specimens in total) in close contact with humans. Sequence-independen

Molecular inferences suggest multiple host shifts of rabies viruses from bats to mesocarnivores in Arizona during 2001-2009.

In nature, rabies virus (RABV; genus Lyssavirus, family Rhabdoviridae) represents an assemblage of phylogenetic lineages, associated with specific mammalian host species. Although it is generally accepted that RABV evolved originally in bats and further shifted to carnivores, mechanisms of such host shifts are poorly understood, and examples are rarely present in surveillance data. Outbreaks in carnivores caused by a RABV variant, associated with big brown bats, occurred repeatedly during 2001-2009 in the Flagstaff area of Arizona. After each outbreak, extensive control campaigns were undertak

Recent loss of vitamin C biosynthesis ability in bats.

The traditional assumption that bats cannot synthesize vitamin C (Vc) has been challenged recently. We have previously shown that two Old World bat species (Rousettus leschenaultii and Hipposideros armiger) have functional L-gulonolactone oxidase (GULO), an enzyme that catalyzes the last step of Vc biosynthesis de novo. Given the uncertainties surrounding when and how bats lost GULO function, exploration of gene evolutionary patterns is needed. We therefore sequenced GULO genes from 16 bat species in 5 families, aiming to establish their evolutionary histories. In five cases we identified pseu

[Musculoskeletal ultrasound II - «why are bats better than physicians»].

This article reviews the aspects which were discussed at the SGUM congress in Davos in the talk «why are bats better than physicians». The talk focussed on modern aspects of Ultrasound (US) diagnostics at the locomotor system. High frequency US probes allow accurate diagnosis, initial assessment and follow up in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteo-Arthritis. Basic pathologic features in these pathologic conditions in form of synovitis, erosion and cartilage damage are described. In case of entrapment neuropathies - first of all in carpal tunnel syndrome - pathognomonic sonomorphologic changes can b

Is Marburg virus enzootic in Gabon?

Marburg virus (MARV) nucleic acid was detected in Rousettus aegyptiacus bats in 2005 and 2006 in the midwest and southeast of Gabon. In this study we used MARV-specific real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and MARV-specific nested RT-PCR assay to screen 1257 bats caught during July 2009, December 2009, and June 2010 in 3 caves situated in northern Gabon. Nine specimens tested positive by the real-time assay, with cycle threshold values ranging from 35 to 39, of which only 1 R. aegyptiacus specimen collected in 2009 was positive in the nested VP35 RT-PCR assay. Bartonella spp. in Bats, Guatemala.

To better understand the role of bats as reservoirs of Bartonella spp., we estimated Bartonella spp. prevalence and genetic diversity in bats in Guatemala during 2009. We found prevalence of 33% and identified 21 genetic variants of 13 phylogroups. Vampire bat-associated Bartonella spp. may cause undiagnosed illnesses in humans.

Sonar detection of jittering real targets in a free-flying bat.

The auditory system measures time with exceptional precision. Echolocating bats evaluate the time delay between call and echo to measure object range. An extreme and disputed result on ranging acuity was found in the virtual delay jitter experiments. In these studies, echoes with alternating delays were played back to bats, which detected a jitter down to 10 ns, corresponding to a ranging acuity of 1.7 microm. The current study was designed to measure the ranging acuity of the nectarivorous bat Glossophaga soricina under semi-natural conditions. Three free-flying bats were trained to discrimin

Susceptibility of North American big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) to infection with European bat lyssavirus type 1.

The aim of this study was to determine the susceptibility of insectivorous bats (using the big brown bat as a model) to infection with European bat lyssavirus type 1a (EBLV-1a), to assess the dynamics of host immune responses and to evaluate the opportunity for horizontal viral transmission within colonies. Two isolates of EBLV-1a, originating from Slovakia (EBLV-1aSK) and Germany (EBLV-1aGE), were tested. Four different routes of inoculation were used with isolate EBLV-1aSK [10(4.8) mouse intracerebral median lethal dose (MICLD(50)) in 50 mul]: intramuscular (i.m.) in the deltoid area or mass

Effect of fasting on carbohydrate metabolism in frugivorous bats (Artibeus lituratus and Artibeus jamaicensis).

The compensatory changes of carbohydrate metabolism induced by fasting were investigated in frugivorous bats, Artibeus lituratus and Artibeus jamaicensis. For this purpose, plasma levels of glucose and lactate, liver and muscle glycogen content, rates of liver gluconeogenesis and the activity of related enzymes were determined in male bats. After a decrease during the first 48 h of fasting, plasma glucose levels remained constant until the end of the experimental period. Plasma lactate levels, extremely high in fed bats, decreased after 48 h of fasting. Similarly, liver glycogen content, marke

A novel bat-like human G3P[10] rotavirus strain from Thailand shares its VP7 lineage with equine Erv105 and human DS-1-like G3P[8] strains: a possible origin in bats.

An unusual rotavirus strain with the G3P[10] genotype, designated RVA/Human-wt/THA/PK2016-1-0120/2016/G3P[10] (short name "PK2016-1-0120"), was detected in a stool specimen from a hospitalized 10-year-old boy with acute gastroenteritis in Thailand. In this study, we sequenced and characterized its whole genome. The strain possesses the genotype constellation G3-P[10]-I8-R3-C3-M3-A9-N3-T3-E3-H6, similar to several previously reported bat and bat-like rotavirus strains (MYAS33-like). In line with this, phylogenetic analyses and sequence comparisons indicate that 10 of the 11 genomic segments (VP

Human Rabies Deaths - Minnesota and California, 2024.

Rabies is an enzootic viral disease in the continental United States and is typically transmitted through the bite of an infected mammal. Infection is almost always fatal if rabies postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) is not received before the onset of symptoms. Bats are the leading source of U.S. human rabies cases. In 2024, CDC identified two U.S. human rabies deaths in September (Minnesota) and November (California) in persons who had a recognized bat encounter but might not have been aware of the potential rabies risk. Neither patient reported the bat encounter to public health officials nor so

Temporal changes in rabies epidemiology in Brazil: an analysis of notifications of suspected and confirmed human rabies cases, 2010-2025.

Human rabies is an invariably fatal encephalitis caused by Lyssavirus species, with near-100% lethality after symptom onset. In Brazil, canine vaccination has markedly reduced urban transmission. However, human deaths continue to occur and are increasingly linked to sylvatic reservoirs, particularly Desmodus rotundus bats. This study describes the epidemiological profile of human rabies in Brazil from 2010 to 2025, focusing on temporal trends, aggressor species, demographics, geographic distribution, and genetic/antigenic variants. This descriptive time-series study used secondary data from th

Structural and functional constraints on spike activation and host protease utilization limit cell entry of SARS-CoV-2-related bat coronaviruses.

UNLABELLED: The persistent threat posed by SARS-CoV-2-related coronaviruses (SC2r-CoVs) in wildlife highlights the risk of zoonotic transmission. Cross-species infectivity is predominantly determined by spike (S) character and S-mediated cell entry. In this study, we systematically investigated BANAL-52 and BANAL-103, which exhibit the closest genetic proximity to SARS-CoV-2, focusing on their spike structures and functional characteristics. First, despite comparable receptor-binding domain (RBD)-ACE2 interactions, the spikes of BANAL-52 and BANAL-103 displayed significantly reduced ACE2 bindi

Assessing Rabies Vaccine Protection against a Novel Lyssavirus, Kotalahti Bat Lyssavirus.

Rabies is a fatal encephalitis caused by an important group of viruses within the Lyssavirus genus. The prototype virus, rabies virus, is still the most commonly reported lyssavirus and causes approximately 59,000 human fatalities annually. The human and animal burden of the other lyssavirus species is undefined. The original reports for the novel lyssavirus, Kotalahti bat lyssavirus (KBLV), were based on the detection of viral RNA alone. In this report we describe the successful generation of a live recombinant virus, cSN-KBLV; where the full-length genome clone of RABV vaccine strain, SAD-B1
