Antimicrobial mouthwashes are considered to reduce dental plaque biofilm and thus the potential to prevent plaque-induced oral diseases, particularly periodontal diseases. The effectiveness of mouthwashes relates to this antiplaque role, as well as, their tooth-whitening potential and ability to mask/mange malodour (halitosis). In general, systemic and local chemotherapeutic treatments offer a variety of options as adjuncts to traditional mechanical therapy, but they should not be used routinely for every patient. In fact, initial debridement to disrupt the biofilm and remove calculus prior to drug treatment may enhance results. Dentists will need to use their clinical judgment based on disease nature and severity to make treatment decisions, with the knowledge that these therapies may be best utilized in the few localized persistent lesions present following thorough scaling and root planing.

Acute colitis occurred after a Hibiclens cleanser enema. Endoscopic and histologic features were not helpful in distinguishing this colitis from an infectious or idiopathic colitis, and a careful history proved invaluable. We review the complications of using soapsuds and various chemical-containing enemas; these complications range from mild colitis to death. Because soap and other chemicals are damaging to colonic mucosa, these enemas should be included as a cause of acute colitis.
