Congenital spinal lipomatous malformations: part I--Classification.

BACKGROUND: Congenital spinal lipomatous malformations constitute a diverse group of lesions. There is considerable confusion in the literature regarding their terminology and a proper classification is long overdue. The first part of this two part report sets out a proposed classification scheme. METHODS: On the basis of this author's experience with 80 patients with a congenital spinal lipomatous malformation treated over a 10 year period, a new classification is proposed. The proposed classification divides congenital spinal lipomatous malformations into two broad groups: 1. Lipomas withou…

Shape-Based Classification of 3D Head Data.

Craniofacial disorders are one of the most common category of birth defects worldwide, and are an important topic of biomedical research. In order to better understand these disorders and correlate them with genetic patterns and life outcomes, researchers need to quantify the craniofacial anatomy. In this paper we introduce several different craniofacial descriptors that are being used in research studies for two craniofacial disorders: the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (a genetic disorder) and plagiocephaly/brachycephaly, disorders caused by pressure on the head. Experimental results show that ou

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia: classification and therapeutic approaches.

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a relatively uncommon cause of anemia. Classifications of AIHA include warm AIHA, cold AIHA (including mainly chronic cold agglutinin disease and paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria), mixed-type AIHA and drug-induced AIHA. AIHA may also be further subdivided on the basis of etiology. Management of AIHA is based mainly on empirical data and on small, retrospective, uncontrolled studies. The therapeutic options for treating AIHA are increasing with monoclonal antibodies and, potentially, complement inhibitory drugs. Based on data available in the literature and o…

Classification system for minimally invasive thyroid surgery.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive thyroid surgery has been increasingly embraced in the United States and elsewhere. The surgical standards hav … length and both the size of the nodule (p = 0.0001) and the patient body mass index (p = 0.0001). A classification system was designed which established distinct and discrete levels for minimally invasive thyroidectomy (MIT I, II and III). CONCLUSIONS: A patient- and disease-driven classification system for assigning eligibility for incremental levels of minima …

Idiopathic generalized epilepsy with absences: syndrome classification.

In a cohort of 275 Caucasians with a broad IGE phenotype, patients with absences were classified. Criteria of the 1989 Commission on Classification of the International League Against Epilepsy for Childhood Absence Epilepsy (CAE 1989 criteria) were compared with the stricter criteria of the ILAE Task Force for Classification and Terminology (CAE 2005 criteria). Among the 129 patients with absences without significant myoclonus, 50 had juvenile absence epilepsy 44 had CAE according to the CAE 1989 criteria and only 30 had CAE according to the CAE 2005 criteria. We found a significantly better o…

Genetic epidemiology, endophenotypes, and eating disorder classification.

OBJECTIVE: To explore how genetic epidemiology has informed the identification of endophenotypes and how endophenotypes may inform future classification of eating disorders. METHOD: Literature review and synthesis. RESULTS: Although a number of endo- and subphenotypes have been suggested for eating disorders, few reach the rigorous definitions developed for candidate endophenotypes. CONCLUSION: Further study of endophenotypes and subphenotypes for eating disorders may assist with developing a more homogenous classification system that more closely reflects underlying biological mechanisms, …

[Cutaneous B-cell lymphoma. Classification and diagnostics].

Primary cutaneous B-cell lymphomas include cutaneous follicle centre lymphoma (PCFCL), cutaneous marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (PCMZL) and cutaneous diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (PCLBCL) "leg type" which are the three main types in the new WHO-EORTC classification for cutaneous lymphomas. PCFCL and PCMZL are indolent lymphomas with an excellent prognosis while PCLBCL shows an aggressive clinical course. All three types must be distinguished from a secondary skin involvement by systemic lymphomas. Since histological and immunohistochemical findings are not decisive, making this distinction req…

[Cutaneous lymphomas: classification and stage-adjusted therapy].

Cutaneous lymphomas are a heterogeneous group of clonal proliferations of T and B lymphocytes with various clinical manifestations and prognosis. The new EORTC WHO classification of cutaneous T- and B-cell lymphomas provides a uniform nomenclature based on clinical, histologic, cytologic and molecular biological features. Accurate classification is a prerequisite for uniform therapeutic concepts. For office-based dermatologist, more than 50% of the therapies deal with classic forms of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas, type mycosis fungoides. In recent years the paradigm for the therapy of cutaneous …

Complex perirectal sepsis: clinical classification and imaging.

BACKGROUND: The use of specialized imaging to assess cryptogenic fistula-in-ano is selective, aimed at delineation of the site of the internal fistula opening and the relationship of the primary and secondary tracks and collections to the main levator plate. Advanced imaging also permits definition of the destructive effects of perirectal sepsis (e.g. internal or external anal sphincter damage, perineal body destruction and an ano- or rectovaginal fistula), which may require secondary reconstructive surgery. METHODS: We performed a PubMed search of outcomes for fistula management in the Engli

[Diabetes mellitus: simple classification and corresponding treatment].

The classification of diabetes mellitus is not always straightforward but is of clinical importance in view of the differences in treatment, prognosis and inheritance. In young patients with acute signs ofhyperglycaemia and a low bodymass index (BMI), diabetes type 1 is the evident diagnosis, and insulin therapy should be initiated as quickly as possible. Deafness in patients with mild symptoms and a highly positive family history suggests the presence of a mitochondrial or maternally inherited type of diabetes: maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD). In the absence of deafness, mat…

International Classification of Childhood Cancer, third edition.

BACKGROUND: The third edition of the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O-3), which was published in 2000, introduced major changes in coding and classification of neoplasms, notably for leukemias and lymphomas, which are important groups of cancer types that occur in childhood. This necessitated a third revision of the 1996 International Classification of Childhood Cancer (ICCC-3). METHODS: The tumor categories for the ICCC-3 were designed to respect several principles: agreement with current international standards, integration of the entities defined by newly develo…

Host classification predicts infection after open fracture.

UNLABELLED: We propose that the classification commonly used in patients with osteomyelitis, the Gustilo classification, also is applicable to patients with open fractures as a method of identifying increased risk of infection because of comorbid medical illness. The records of 174 adult patients sustaining open fractures of long bones were retrospectively reviewed. Each patient was sorted into Class A, B, or C based on 14 immune system compromising factors. Class A has no compromising factors, Class B has one or two compromising factors, and Class C has more than three compromising factors. T…

Spinal stenosis: pathophysiology, clinical and radiologic classification.

Stenosis is the narrowing of a hollow tube, in this case the central lumbar spinal canal, lateral recess, or foramen. Clinically, this narro … he presence of deformity such as spondylolisthesis or scoliosis. Overlap occurs in these schemes of classification in that central stenosis with thecal sac compression typically leads to neurogenic claudication, whereas lateral recess compression is associated with compression of an individual nerve root and, therefore, radiculopathy. Because radiographic change …

[Pathologic classification of upper urinary tract tumors].

OBJECTIVES: To do an update on the upper urinary tract tumors classification systems. METHODS/RESULTS: Bibliography review of the various classification systems appeared over the last years, comparing them and reviewing their associated problems. CONCLUSIONS: Current systematization advocated by WHO and ISUP are the most adequate for patient stratification. However, there are problems for coupling tumors with characteristics in the limit between some of their categories, so that we consider it will be convenient to review them.

Classification issues related to neuropathic trigeminal pain.

The goal of a classification system of medical conditions is to facilitate accurate communication, to ensure that each condition is described uniformly and universally and that all data banks for the storage and retrieval of research and clinical data related to the conditions are consistent. Classification entails deciding which kinds of diagnostic entities should be recognized and how to order them in a meaningful way. Currently there are 3 major pain classification systems of relevance to orofacial pain: The International Association for the Study of Pain classification system, the Internat…
