The first 33 heart-lung transplant recipients in our series were studied for evidence of CMV infection. CMV infection was diagnosed by a change in the serologic status, viral culture, or histology of lung tissue. Of 18 patients who were preoperatively negative for CMV antibody, eight received organs from CMV antibody-positive donors. Five developed pneumonitis (fatal in three)l; one survived primary CMV of the GI tract. Ewes at 70 days of gestation were exposed by various routes to a culture of Chlamydia psittaci. Chlamydial infection of fetal tissues, generally accompanied by abortion, was observed only in four of six ewes inoculated via the tonsillar crypts and in five of seven ewes injected subcutaneously; most of these also developed antibodies to C psittaci. Seroconversion after normal lambing was also observed in most ewes inoculated orally or by stomach tube, despite failure to detect chlamydia in them.

An indirect ELISA and an inhibition ELISA were developed for the detection of cytomegalovirus (CMV)-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) and CMV-specific total immunoglobulin, respectively. Both assays were more specific than the complement fixation (CF) test, and titres of positive sera were 660 times higher by IgG ELISA and 6 times higher by inhibition ELISA than titres by the CF test. Titres by IgG ELISA were reliably determined using the absorbance obtained at a single serum dilution of 1/1,000 in conjunction with a standard graph. Experiments on guinea pigs and adrenalectomized mice showed that the anaphylactogenic properties xenogenic immunoglobulin preparations were 2- to 2.5-fold higher than those of antitoxic sera "Diaferm-3". The partial acid-enzymatic hydrolysis of immunoglobulin preparations obtained by ethanol fractionation permitted a considerable decrease in their sensitizing activity and anticomplementary properties.

Early nuclear antigen (CMNA) induced by human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) was extracted from infected human embryonic fibroblast cells and purified by ds DNA Sephadex chromatography. Gene duplication is one of the basic processes underlying evolutionary changes. The gamma-chains of human foetal haemoglobin is coded by multiple structural genes.
