Individual differences in decision making and reward processing predict changes in cannabis use: a prospective functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Decision-making deficits are thought to play an important role in the development and persistence of substance use disorders. Individual differences in decision-making abilities and their underlying neurocircuitry may, therefore, constitute an important predictor for the course of substance use and the development of substance use disorders. Here, we investigate the predictive value of decision making and neural mechanisms underlying decision making for future cannabis use and problem severity in a sample of heavy cannabis users. Brain activity during a monetary decision-making task (Iowa gamb

Education based on the theory of planned behavior to improve medication regimen adherence, hope and marital quality in patients with substance use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Regarding the psychosocial aspect of treating those with substance use, it is crucial for them to exhibit a capacity for personal transformation, fully utilize their remaining capabilities, and eradicate societal discrimination. We aimed to assess the efficacy of educational instruction grounded in the theory of planned behavior (TPB) in enhancing adherence to medication regimens, fostering hope, and improving marital quality among people with substance use disorders. METHODS: This study was conducted at the Rapid Addiction Closure Center in Fasa city, Iran, involving a sample of

The role of neurocognitive functioning, substance use variables and the DSM-5 severity scale in cocaine relapse: A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: The severity of substance use disorder (SUD) is currently defined by the sum of DSM-5 criteria. However, little is known about the validity of this framework or the role of additional severity indicators in relapse prediction. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between DSM-5 criteria, neurocognitive functioning, substance use variables and cocaine relapse among inpatients with cocaine use disorder (CUD). METHODS: 128 adults aged between 18 and 45 years were evaluated; 68 (59 males, 9 females) had CUD and 60 (52 males, 8 females) were healthy controls. For the group w

Antenatal smoking and substance-misuse, infant and newborn response to hypoxia.

OBJECTIVES: To determine at the peak age for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) the ventilatory response to hypoxia of infants whose mothers substance misused in pregnancy (SM infants), or smoked during pregnancy (S mothers) and controls whose mothers neither substance misused or smoked. In addition, we compared the ventilatory response to hypoxia during the neonatal period and peak age of SIDS. WORKING HYPOTHESIS: Infants of S or SM mothers compared to control infants would have a poorer ventilatory response to hypoxia at the peak age of SIDS. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, observational study

Abnormalities of somatic peptide-containing nerves supplying the pelvic floor of women with genitourinary prolapse and stress urinary incontinence.

OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that genital prolapse may be related to peripheral nerve abnormalities, we examined the changes occurring to peptide-containing nerve processes supplying the periurethral muscles in women with stress urinary incontinence associated with prolapse. METHODS: Thirty patients with genital prolapse and 10 age-matched control subjects entered the study. All patients were evaluated by urodynamic investigations. Ten of 30 patients had pure stress urinary incontinence; none of the control subjects was incontinent. During surgery, four biopsy samples were obtained from

Common neurofunctional dysregulations characterize obsessive-compulsive, substance use, and gaming disorders-An activation likelihood meta-analysis of functional imaging studies.

Compulsivity and loss of behavioral control represent core symptoms in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), substance use disorder (SUD), and internet gaming disorder (IGD). Despite elaborated animal models suggesting that compulsivity is mediated by cortico-striatal circuits and a growing number of neuroimaging case-control studies, common neurofunctional alterations in these disorders have not been systematically examined. The present activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis capitalized on previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies to determine shared neurofunc

Shared network-level functional alterations across substance use disorders: A multi-level kernel density meta-analysis of resting-state functional connectivity studies.

An increasing number of neuroimaging studies indicate functional alterations in cortico-striatal loops in individuals with substance use disorders (SUD). Dysregulations in these circuits may contribute to drug-seeking and drug-consuming behaviour by impeding inhibitory control, habit formation, and reward processing. Despite evidence of network-level changes in SUD, a shared pattern of functional alterations within and between spatially distributed brain networks has not been systematically investigated. The present meta-analytic investigation aims at identifying common alterations in resting-

Impulsivity in abstinent alcohol and polydrug dependence: a multidimensional approach.

RATIONALE: Dependence on drugs and alcohol is associated with impaired impulse control, but deficits are rarely compared across individuals dependent on different substances using several measures within a single study. OBJECTIVES: We investigated impulsivity in abstinent substance-dependent individuals (AbD) using three complementary techniques: self-report, neuropsychological and neuroimaging. We hypothesised that AbDs would show increased impulsivity across modalities, and that this would depend on length of abstinence. METHODS: Data were collected from the ICCAM study: 57 control and 86

A study of the dopamine D2 receptor gene in pathological gambling.

Pathological gambling has been termed both the 'pure' and the 'hidden' addiction. 'Pure' because it is not associated with the intake of any addicting substance, and 'hidden' because it is an extension of a common, socially accepted behaviour. The Taq A1 variant of the human DRD2 gene has been associated with drug addiction, some forms of severe alcoholism, and other impulsive, addictive behaviours. We have sought to determine if there is a similar association with pathological gambling. A total of 222 non-Hispanic Caucasian pathological gamblers from multiple sites across the US participated

[Clinical application and mechanistic studies of psychedelics for treatment of depression: progress and future challenges].

Depression is a complex and globally prevalent mental disorder, for which conventional antidepressant medications face limitations such as delayed onset and insufficient efficacy. Classic psychedelics, most notably psilocybin, have recently emerged as promising candidates for treatment of depression and demonstrated rapid, robust, and sustained antidepressant effects in controlled clinical settings. Their unique mechanisms of action and clinical prospects have become a key research focus in psychiatry and neuroscience. This review synthesizes the latest advances in the field over the past 5 ye

Associations between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance exposures and metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in adult National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017 to 2018.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent organic pollutants previously associated with elevated liver enzymes in human cohorts and steatotic liver disease in animal models. We aimed to evaluate the associations between PFAS exposures, and liver enzymes and vibration controlled transient elastography (VCTE) biomarkers of metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in adult National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017 to 2018. VCTE was determined by FibroScan. Serum PFAS (n = 14), measured by mass spectrometry, were analyzed individually an

The psychedelic effects of cannabis: A review of the literature.

Cannabis and classic psychedelics are controlled substances with emerging evidence of efficacy in the treatment of a variety of psychiatric illnesses. Cannabis has largely not been regarded as having psychedelic effects in contemporary literature, despite many examples of historical use along with classic psychedelics to attain altered states of consciousness. Research into the "psychedelic" effects of cannabis, and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in particular, could prove helpful for assessing potential therapeutic indications and elucidating the mechanism of action of both cannabis and c…

Structural and Metabolic Changes in Bone.

As an essential component of the skeleton, bone tissue provides solid support for the body and protects vital organs. Bone tissue is a reservoir of calcium, phosphate, and other ions that can be released or stored in a controlled manner to provide constant concentration in body fluids. Normally, bone development or osteogenesis occurs through two ossification processes (intra-articular and intra-chondral), but the first produces woven bone, which is quickly replaced by stronger lamellar bone. Contrary to commonly held misconceptions, bone is a relatively dynamic organ that undergoes significan

Pharmacokinetic Profiles of Nalbuphine after Intraperitoneal and Subcutaneous Administration to C57BL/6 Mice.

Mice undergo a variety of procedures that necessitate the use of analgesic agents. Opioids are often essential to successful pain management plans, but most are controlled substances, and their use requires appropriate federal and state registrations. Nalbuphine is a potentially effective opioid analgesic for mice that is not currently classified as a controlled substance. This compound has received little attention as an analgesic for mice, and standard dosage regimens have not been developed. Here we compared the pharmacokinetic profiles of 10 mg/kg nalbuphine in male C57BL/6 mice subcutaneo…

Nitrate anaphylaxis.

BACKGROUND: Nitrate and nitrite salts are commonly used to preserve and sustain color in a number of processed meats. To date there have been no described cases of anaphylaxis to either nitrates or nitrites in the literature. OBJECTIVE: We report a patient with anaphylaxis to nitrates and nitrites documented by double-blind, placebo-controlled capsule challenge. METHODS: A 22-year-old previously well male, presented to a tertiary referral center with a 4-year history of recurrent anaphylaxis after eating take-out food. No further episodes occurred while adhering to a strict elimination diet.
