Omental Pseudocyst Following an Open Groin Surgery: A Cause for Concern.

Retained, non-absorbable sutures following surgical procedures can lead to rare complications, including pseudocyst formation. Here, we present a unique case of an omental pseudocyst caused by suture migration after an open inguinal hernia repair with mesh. A 31-year-old male with a history of right-sided open mesh hernioplasty performed two years prior presented with dull, aching abdominal pain persisting for six months. Clinical examination was unremarkable except for a right groin scar. Ultrasonography and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen revealed a complex omental

Management and Rehabilitation of Dentigerous Cyst With 10-Year Follow-Up: A Case Report.

Odontogenic cysts are fluid-filled sacs arising from tooth-developing tissues within the jawbone, often causing swelling, pain, or displacement of teeth. A dentigerous cyst, specifically encapsulating the unerupted tooth's crown, can interfere with dental development by displacing teeth, causing resorption of adjacent teeth, and complicating dental or surgical interventions. This case report represents a long-term follow-up of a 35-year-old male with a large mandibular dentigerous cyst extending to the lower right border of the mandible, associated with a horizontally impacted third molar in t

Prenatally Ruptured Patent Urachus: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Patent urachus is a type of urachal anomaly in which the urachus does not tail off but remains connected to the bladder in the umbilicus. The prevalence of patent urachus is very low. Herein, we report a case of patent urachus ruptured and exposed to amniotic fluid in utero. In this case, the size decreased after the second trimester, which was thought to be due to rupture in utero. After delivery, patent urachus was confirmed by inserting a foley catheter, which runs through a ruptured cyst on umbilical cord insertion. The day after delivery, the neonate underwent surgical excision of the ura

Synchronous association of hepatocellular carcinoma and cystic echinococcosis with unusual pathology: report on diagnostic and pathological variability.

Cystic hydatid disease or cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a globally endemic zoonosis caused by the larval cyst stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus Concomitant presence of CE and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a rare clinical scenario. A 70-year-old male patient presented with acute abdominal pain to the surgical outpatient department. On evaluation, a cystic lesion with solid components and free fluid in the abdomen was observed, which led to multiple differentials in the working diagnosis. A CT showed the mass to have a delayed enhancement. Surgical exploration revealed a partiall

Hypernatremia-induced Neurologic Complications After Hepatic Hydatid Cyst Surgery: Pretreat to Prevent.

INTRODUCTION: Surgery is effective treatment for echinococcosis; however, there is a risk of hypertonic saline resorption and acute hypernatremia. AIM: We report two cases of severe hypernatremia following hydatid cyst removal. CASE REPORTS: A 17-year-old girl underwent surgical removal of hepatic hydatid cyst. Following the surgery, she developed seizures evolving to status epilepticus, and was sedated and mechanically ventilated. Blood chemistry showed hypernatremia. Fluid resuscitation with 5% dextrose infusions was started in combination with furosemide. Electrolytes were monitored frequ

TNFα signaling regulates cystic epithelial cell proliferation through Akt/mTOR and ERK/MAPK/Cdk2 mediated Id2 signaling.

Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) is present in cyst fluid and promotes cyst growth in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). However, the cross-talk between TNFα and PKD associated signaling pathways remains elusive. In this study, we found that stimulation of renal epithelial cells with TNFα or RANKL (receptor activator of NF-κB ligand), a member of the TNFα cytokine family, activated either the PI3K pathway, leading to AKT and mTOR mediated the increase of Id2 protein, or MAPK and Cdk2 to induce Id2 nuclear translocation. The effects of TNFα/RANKL on increasing Id2 protein a…

Cervical intramedullary epidermoid cyst with liquid contents.

Intramedullary spinal epidermoid cysts are benign ectopic embryological growths with reported incidence of less than 1% of intramedullary tumors. In this case we report an unusual cervical intramedullary epidermid with liquid contents. A 40-year-old patient presented with progressive weakness of all four limbs of four months duration, bowel and bladder disturbances of two days duration, pain and paresthesias in all four limbs. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a well defined intramedullary lesion extending from C2-C3 level with widening of the cord. The lesion was hypointense on T1W im

Hepatic cerebrospinal fluid pseudocyst: a case report and review of the literature.

An abdominal pseudocyst is a rare, but important complication in patients with a ventriculo-peritoneal (VP) shunt insertion. Several predisposing factors for this complication have been suggested, including infection, obstruction or dislodgement, but the pathophysiology is still unknown. However, the abdominal inflammatory process is accepted widely as a hypothesis for the formation of an abdominal pseudocyst. In this study, we report the case of a 21-year-old male that presented with a high-grade fever, poor appetite, shortness of breath and unconsciousness 1 week after receiving a VP shunt i

Trauma-induced aneurysmal bone cysts in two psittacine species (Cacatua alba and Nymphicus hollandicus).

An umbrella cockatoo (Cacatua alba) and two cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) were presented with rapidly enlarging masses of the head or wing joints. Historic trauma to these areas was confirmed in two cases. All birds were >2 yr of age, and two were female. Cytologic examination of fluid aspirated from masses in two cases was described as serosanguineous cytologically but failed to reveal inflammation, neoplasia, or microorganisms. Radiographic evaluation of these masses included proliferation and lysis of bone, suggestive of a neoplastic process. Histopathologic examination of surgically e

Arachnoid cyst of the cranial posterior fossa causing sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus: a case report.

Arachnoid cysts are developmental collections of cerebrospinal fluid covered by layers of arachnoidal epithelium and are usually located in the middle cranial fossa. Localizations in the posterior fossa are uncommon and generally remain asymptomatic or cause vague and non-specific symptoms. We here report the unusual case of a young patient with an arachnoid cyst of the posterior fossa that had become manifest in the form of left-sided hypoacusia and tinnitus. Audiometric evaluation, auditory brainstem responses and transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions tests revealed a progressive monolatera

Inflamed urachal cyst containing calculi in an adult.

The urachus is an embryonic structure that persists after birth in some individuals and can cause various problems. We report a case of an inflamed urachal cyst filled with a thick yellow fluid and several calculi in a woman with a 1-month history of dysuria. Physical examination revealed a fist-sized tumor located infraumbically in the midline. The patient's erythrocyte sedimentation rate was elevated; the results of all other routine laboratory studies were normal. Sonography showed a regularly shaped, ovoid, hypoechoic cystic area in the abdominal wall measuring 8 x 4 x 3 cm and containing

[A retrosellar arachnoid cyst as a rare cause of homonymous hemianopsia].

BACKGROUND: Arachnoidal cysts are cystic lesions filled with a cerebrospinal-fluid-like content within the leptomeninges. Usually arachnoidal cysts represent a congenital malformation. Clinical signs (increased intracranial pressure and/or neurological defects) may become apparent in children or young adults. PATIENT: A sixteen year old boy was referred to our outpatient clinic because of blurred vision in both eyes since five days. The patient complained of cephalgia and of an increased sleep requirement in the last two weeks. Morphological findings were within the normal range. The visual a

16 ischemic femoral heads from human adult were studied with radiologically and histologically. The two heads from fresh fracture of femoral neck of 1 month looked grossly normal; radiograms and CT showed no abnormality though necrosis surrounded by living bone tissue without cystic formation was found on the top area histologically. The pathology including the 12 collapsed heads from old neck fracture and 2 osteoarthritic heads were similar but varied in degree and extent of mineralization with time. Numerous cysts, were walled off by a layer of osteosclerosis on the necks side. While dense f

Huge Mesothelial Splenic Cyst.

INTRODUCTION: Splenic cysts are rare lesions that are classified as either true (primary) or false (secondary) cysts based on their epithelial lining. The pathogenesis of primary splenic cysts is not well understood, and several hypotheses have been proposed, including the Mesothelial invagination theory, which postulates that during development, the mesothelial lining invades along with the capsule. As the lining has a pluripotent nature, it has the propensity to undergo metaplasia and secretion of fluid, leading to the formation of cysts. CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-year-old female patient pres

Sacral Intradural Arachnoid Cyst of Cauda Equina: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

This report presents the case of a 36-year-old man complaining of chronic low back pain and numbness along the posterolateral surface of the right leg. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a disc degeneration and protrusion at the L5-S1 level and an extensive fluid-equivalent formation with a craniocaudal dimension of 8 cm at the S1-S5 level. Initially, due to the minimal clinical complaints, the cyst was considered asymptomatic. Two months later, the patient presented to the clinic with polyradiculopathy across S1-S5 dermatomes bilaterally, paresis of the tibial nerves, and retention of

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is driven by mutations in PKD1 and PKD2 genes. Recent work suggests that epigenetic mod … 2 and SMYD2/TNF-α/NF-κB/SMYD2. These pathways provide mechanisms by which SMYD2 might be induced by cyst fluid IL-6 and TNF-α in ADPKD kidneys. The SMYD2 transcriptional target gene Ptpn13 also linked SMYD2 to other PKD-associated signaling pathways, including ERK, mTOR, and Akt signaling, via PTPN13-mediated phosphorylation.

Spontaneous drainage of an asymptomatic recurrent hydatid cyst of the sacrum.

STUDY DESIGN: A case report. OBJECTIVE: This is an unusual presentation of recurrent hydatid disease. Spillage of a hydatid cyst was previously reported in a symptomatic case of primary spinal hydatid disease. However, we did not find any examples of spontaneous discharge of hydatid cyst fluid in an asymptomatic case in the literature. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Bone hydatid cysts occur in 1% to 2.5% of all patients with hydatid cyst disease, whereas 50% of bone hydatidosis cases are spinal. Diagnosis is difficult and patients usually present with neural compression symptoms. Surgery and an…

An aspergilloma in an echinococcal cyst cavity.

Aspergilloma is a saprophytic infection which can colonize preexisting lung cavities. The most common underlying diseases are tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, cavitary lung cancer, etc. Although aspergilloma can also occur in operated hydatid cyst cavities, only a few cases have been reported in literature. A 32-year-old female patient underwent cystectomy for the diagnosis of perforated intraparenchymal giant hydatid cyst located in the right upper lobe, reaching down to the hilum. Capitonnage was not performed and it was observed that a residual cavity remained in the cystectomy area. The patient
