We describe 3 professional footballers who developed lichenoid dermatitis over a short period of time. Clinically, the eruption in all 3 of them can be classified as lichenoid photodermatitis. We suggest an influence of possible contact allergens or photo-active substances. Histologic evidence points to features of classical lichen planus with purpura, typical of lichen aureus (purpuricus), but showing some clinical and morphological differences.

Three patients with photosensitive eruptions related to the use of different men's perfumes were evaluated. We found that they were photoallergic to musk ambrette, an inexpensive, readily available synthetic perfume ingredient. Studies of cross-reactivity with other perfumed colognes and after-shave lotions suggest that musk ambrette is present in clinically significant concentration in large numbers of other cosmetic products.

A 6-year-old girl with xeroderma pigmentosum was contact and photocontact sensitized to PABA which had been used as a sunscreening agent. The activating wavelengths for photocontact dermatitis were in long-wave ultraviolet light. The experimental photocontact sensitization was not induced in guinea pigs. Although PABA is the most effective and harmless sunscreening agent for normal skin, it could induce photocontact sensitivity especially in diseased or damaged skin.

Between 1995 and 1998, 174 dental personnel were referred as patients to the Department of Occupational and Environmental Dermatology, Stockholm. After clinical examination, 131 were patch tested with the Swedish standard series and 109 with a dental screening series. To estimate the pathogenesis of magnesium deficiency dermatitis (MDD) in the hairless rats fed with a hypomagnesic diet, plasma concentrations of leukotrienes (LTB4, LTC4, LTD4) were measured.
