Tinea corporis and the tinea pedis model in guinea pig with Trichophyton mentagrophytes are well established models of dermatophytoses. We attempted to provide animal infection models for T. tonsurans, endemic in Japan, and Malassezia restricta, an important pathogenic factor in seborrhoeic dermatitis, by utilizing the tinea corporis model. Isotretinoin is an extremely effective drug if given systemically in severe forms of seborrhoea and acne, being the only retinoid with potent sebostatic properties. Lipophilic propionibacterium acnes stores large amounts of porphyrins. This peculiarity can be used for photodynamic destruction of propionibacteria. After repeated irradiations with a blue light-type high pressure lamp (Narva NC 1000-64) both acne and seborrhoea was improved markedly (10 irradiations, each for 10 minutes, cumulative light dose 325 J/cm2). Also porphyrin content inside acne follicles dropped. Serial irradiations with short range visible light (400 to 420 nm) are recommended for acne treatment during the light-poor season of the year.

The epidermoid cyst with a seborrheic verruca-like cyst wall is a newly described variant of the epidermoid cyst. The cyst wall of this variant shows changes simulating seborrheic keratosis and verruca. Our case of a subcutaneous mass was shown histopathologically to have this variant.

An ultrastructural study of five seborrheic keratoses arising in a symmetrical, patterned distribution following the lines of cleavage on the backs of two patients showed the presence of melanosome macrocomplexes 2 to 5 microns in size. Epidermal cell renewal time of seborrheic skin was estimated in 8 adult Cocker Spaniels and 5 adult Irish Setters, using autoradiography after [3H]thymidine was given intradermally. Cell renewal time of the viable epidermis was approximately 7 days. Seemingly, the seborrheic skin observed in these Cocker Spaniels and Irish Setters was associated with an altered rate of epidermal keratinization.

The efficacy and safety of isotretinoin in the treatment of idiopathic seborrhea in dogs were examined. Isotretinoin was judged effective in only 1 of 8 dogs. Side effects included mild conjunctivitis, transient erythematous rash, and increased serum cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations.

9 patients suffering from psoriasis vulgaris associated with sebopsoriasis lesions as well as 21 patients showing sebopsoriasis only were treated with 1% bifonazole cream and gel. We found good and excellent results in 86% of the sebopsoriatic, but only in 40% of the psoriasis vulgaris lesions. These results were achieved independently of the galenic preparation. In some of the sebopsoriasis patients, typical lesions were brought about by intracutaneous injection of bacterial antigens like steptococcus viridans and staphylococcus albus; my be, this is a hint on the etiology.
