Higher total energy costs strain the elderly, especially low-income, across 31 developed countries.

Addressing the total energy cost burden of elderly people is essential for designing equitable and effective energy policies, especially in responding to energy crisis in an aging society. It is due to the double impact of energy price hikes on households-through direct impact on fuel bills and indirect impact on the prices of goods and services consumed. However, while examining the household energy cost burden of the elderly, their indirect energy consumption and associated cost burden remain poorly understood. This study quantifies and compares the direct and indirect energy footprints and

Appraising Neonatal Morbidity and Mortality in a Developing Country Categorized by Gestational Age Grouping and Implications for Targeted Interventions.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the relatively higher neonatal morbidity and mortality in developing countries, there are limited data on the detailed analysis of the burden in Nigeria. With a database of over 14,000 admissions, this study presents a compelling picture of the current trends disaggregated by their gestational age groups. It provides unique opportunities for better-targeted interventions for further reducing newborn mortality in line with SDG 3, Target 3.2. METHODS: This prospective observational study involved newborn babies admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the University…

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of cancer patients and their hospital course during the COVID-19 pandemic in a developing country.

In the new Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, cancer patients are considered a particularly susceptible population. We compared the type and magnitude of COVID-19 clinical manifestations among cancer patients in our center to non-cancer COVID-19 affected patients including 99 patients (28 cancer patients and 71 non-cancer patients). Hepatocellular carcinoma, breast carcinoma, and leukemia were the most common cancers. Diabetes and hypertension were prevalent comorbidities. Dyspnea, cough, fatigue, myalgia and diarrhea were statistically indifferent in both groups. Fatigue was more p

Prevalence of Cardiac Abnormalities in Children with Chronic Kidney Disease: A Cross-sectional Study from a Developing Country.

Improved therapeutic modalities in chronic kidney diseases (CKD) children and consequent extension of life expectancy, draws more attention towards secondary complications. Cardiovascular adaptations precipitating such terminal events, begin in pre-dialysis CKD. Hence, it's imperative to identify modifiable risk factors to direct care and resources in haltering CKD progression, evade long-term dialysis and anticipate kidney transplantation to avert cardiac complications in predialysis period. One hundred and six pre-dialysis patients aged one year to 15 years, with estimated glomerular filtrat

Non-specific effects of BCG vaccination on neutrophil and lymphocyte counts of healthy neonates from a developed country.

BCG vaccination is known to reduce neonatal mortality from infections in a pathogen-agnostic manner. In this observational study we report on whether an emergency granulopoietic response is elicited in term babies from a developed country following BCG vaccination. We studied a cohort of neonates re-admitted to the hospital from home for feeding support separated into 2 groups dependent on whether they had received BCG vaccination. Clinical data including gender, weight, gestational age, method of feeding and full blood count results were retrieved retrospectively. While lymphocyte counts incr

A systematic review of the association between perinatal depression and cognitive development in infancy in low and middle-income countries.

The association between perinatal depression and infant cognitive development has been well documented in research based in high-income contexts, but the literature regarding the same relationship in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) is less developed. The aim of this study is to systematically review what is known in this area in order to inform priorities for early intervention and future research in LMICs. The review protocol was pre-registered on Prospero (CRD42018108589) and relevant electronic databases were searched using a consistent set of keywords and 1473 articles were screene

The effects of polio eradication efforts on health systems: a cross-country analysis using the Develop-Distort Dilemma.

Vertical disease control programmes have enormous potential to benefit or weaken health systems, and it is critical to understand how programmes' design and implementation impact the health systems and communities in which they operate. We use the Develop-Distort Dilemma (DDD) framework to understand how the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) distorted or developed local health systems. We include document review and 176 interviews with respondents at the global level and across seven focus countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia and
