BACKGROUND: Overresection of the lower lateral cartilages to narrow the tip in individuals with thick skin is a common mistake with functional and aesthetic consequences. The most frequent deformities are external valve dysfunction, alar retraction, alar pinch, tip asymmetry, lack of tip definition, and parrot beak deformity resulting from drooping of the tip.
METHODS: In 82 patients who underwent revision surgery from 1998 to 2007 the lower lateral cartilages were missing. To restore function of the external nasal valve and correct aesthetic deformities it is essential to rebuild the anatomi

OBJECTIVE: Atticotomy represents an essential surgical step within the management of attical cholesteatoma during endoscopic ear surgery. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the safety and functional results of an endoscopic atticotomy performed with piezosurgery, in terms of audiological outcomes and tissue's healing.
METHODS: This is an observational retrospective study on patients with attical cholesteatoma who underwent endoscopic ear surgery with piezoelectric atticotomy and subsequent scutum reconstruction either with tragal cartilage or temporalis muscle fascia. Scutumplasty's

INTRODUCTION: Autologous costochondral grafting is a commonly employed technique in pediatric otolaryngology for reconstructing a cartilaginous or bony structure, such as the trachea, larynx, nose or mandible by harvesting rib cartilage or bone from the same patient. Complications include infection, pneumothorax, hematoma, scarring, and pleural leak, and the literature regarding these complication rates in pediatric patients undergoing this procedure is sparse. The objective of this study was to determine the donor site complication rate associated with rib graft harvest procedures performed b

OBJECTIVE: Microtia is a congenital partial or total loss of the external ear with current treatment approaches involving autologous construction from costal cartilage. Alternatively, tissue engineering provides possible use of normal or microtia auricular chondrocytes harvested from patients. This study investigated effects in vitro of basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) and osteogenic protein 1 (OP-1) on human pediatric normal and microtia auricular chondrocytes and their potential proliferation and differentiation for cellular expansion. A working hypothesis was that FGF-2 promotes proli

Petrified ear (PE), an exceptional entity, stands for the calcification ± ossification of auricular cartilage (CAC/OAC); its pathogenic traits are still an open matter. Endocrine panel represents one of the most important; yet, no standard protocol of assessments is available. Our objective was to highlight most recent PE data and associated endocrine (versus non-endocrine) ailments in terms of presentation, imagery tools, hormonal assessments, biopsy, outcome, pathogenic features. This was a comprehensive review via PubMed search (January 2000-March 2024). A total of 75 PE subjects included:

Retention of inflammatory mediators and cells in the middle ear cleft during chronic otitis media with effusion (COME), results in ongoing inflammation with the potential for pathologic changes and hearing loss. Cytokines are glycoproteins produced by macrophages and other cells. Activities of cytokines include fever production, osteoclast, fibroblast, phagocyte and cytotoxic cell activation, regulation of antibody formation, and inhibition of cartilage, bone and endothelial cell growth. Using enzyme-linked immunospecific assays we measured levels of six cytokines in middle ear effusions (MEE)

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical classification and treatment of localized attic cholesteatoma through surgical management.
METHOD: Twenty-one patients (21 ears) of localized attic cholesteatoma accepted atticotomy. Then different surgical managements were carried out according to the extent of cholesteatoma and whether the malleo-incudal joint was destroyed or not. If the cholesteatoma has only reached the surface of the malleo-incudal joint, it was regarded as type I (5 patients). To this type, the cholesteatoma was removed and the ossicular chain was preserved. If the cholesteatoma h

OBJECTIVE: There are only a few studies evaluating ossiculoplasty results in the pediatric age group. Although the effect of different factors on the results of ossiculoplasty is investigated, the effect of age on ossiculoplasty results is not known. In this study, the effect of age on ossiculoplasty results has been investigated.
METHODS: This retrospective clinical study was performed in 60 patients (30 female, 30 male; mean age 15.5±14.3 years, range 9-57 years) who underwent ossiculoplasty. The cases were divided into two groups according to their age. Group A consisted of pediatric cases

OBJECTIVE: Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare condition characterized by recurrent inflammation of cartilaginous tissue and systemic manifestations. Data on this disease remain scarce. This study was undertaken to describe patient characteristics and disease evolution, identify prognostic factors, and define different clinical phenotypes of RP.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 142 patients with RP who were seen between 2000 and 2012 in a single center.
RESULTS: Of the 142 patients, 86 (61%) were women. The mean ± SD age at first symptoms was 43.5 ± 15 years. Patients had t

Short stature is clinically and genetically heterogeneous, and defects in the extracellular matrix of growth plate cartilage represent a key disease mechanism. ACAN encodes aggrecan, the major proteoglycan of the growth plate cartilage extracellular matrix. Heterozygous ACAN variants are a recognized cause of familial short stature, often associated with advanced bone age and early growth cessation, yet they show a broad phenotypic spectrum. We aimed to delineate the clinical and molecular spectrum of ACAN-related short stature in a Turkish cohort. We retrospectively reviewed 47 individuals fr

Copy number variants (CNVs) associated with neurodevelopmental disorders are characterized by extensive phenotypic heterogeneity. In particular, one CNV was identified in a subset of children clinically diagnosed with intellectual disabilities (ID) that results in a hemizygous deletion of multiple genes at chromosome 16p12.1. In addition to ID, individuals with this deletion display a variety of symptoms including microcephaly, seizures, cardiac defects, and growth retardation. Moreover, patients also manifest severe craniofacial abnormalities, such as micrognathia, cartilage malformation of t

IMPORTANCE: Multiple techniques for a more secure and stable anchoring of the foot of a total ossicular replacement prosthesis (TORP) on the footplate have been proposed. To address this issue, a technique was developed that fits a cartilage shoe into the oval niche to guide the base of the prosthesis into a preformed central perforation.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term results of the cartilage shoe technique used to anchor a titanium TORP on the stapes footplate in patients after type III tympanoplasty.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Medical record review of total ossiculoplasties

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction following otoplasty for surgical correction of protruding or prominent ears using the Farrior technique.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of patients undergoing cosmetic otoplasty with the Farrior method at a private facial plastic surgery practice in Tampa, Fla. The study population comprised 75 subjects desiring operative correction of auricular deformities by one of the authors (E.H.F.) over the past 15 years. The subjects (40 male and 35 female) ranged in age from 5 to 68 years, with a mean age of 23.9 years. Clinica

OBJECTIVE: The study aims to evaluate posterior pharyngeal wall augmentation using autologous tragal cartilage graft in adults with velopharyngeal valve insufficiency (VPI).
METHODS: The study included 23 patients with VPI (grade I, II, III), with ages ranging from 19 to 45 years. Six patients had previously undergone simple palatoplasty for cleft palate, 8 patients had previously undergone adenotonsillectomy and 9 patients had previously undergone uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). The procedure was done by implanting a piece of autologous tragal cartilage in the posterior pharyngeal wall. Pa
