OBJECTIVES: Cortical bone drilling for preparation of screw placement is common in multiple surgical fields. The heat generated while drilling may reach thresholds high enough to cause osteonecrosis. This can compromise implant stability. Orthopaedic drill bits are several orders more expensive than their similarly sized, publicly available industrial counterparts. We hypothesize that an industrial bit will generate less heat during drilling, and the bits will not generate more heat after multiple cortical passes.
METHODS: We compared 4 4.0 mm orthopaedic and 1 3.97 mm industrial drill bits.

We demonstrate spontaneous emission rate enhancement and saturable absorption of cadmium selenide colloidal quantum dots coupled to a nanobeam photonic crystal cavity. We perform time-resolved lifetime measurements and observe an average enhancement of 4.6 for the spontaneous emission rate of quantum dots located at the cavity as compared to those located on an unpatterned surface. We also demonstrate that the cavity linewidth narrows with increasing pump intensity due to quantum dot saturable absorption.

Human blood was irradiated with beta-particles from an external source of 90Sr. The source was a rolled piece of silver foil, active dimensions: 100 X 12.5 mm, incorporating 3.7 X 10(8) Bq (10 mCi) of 90Sr/90Y. After culturing for 48 h, the dicentric yield in the lymphocytes at the first metaphase was measured as a function of the dose in the blood. The aberration yield fitted the linear-quadratic function well, which is consistent with the single-track and two-track model for aberration formation at low LET radiation. The curve for 90Sr beta-rays was compared with a curve for 60Co gamma-rays.
