Pregnancy post-Stevens-Johnson syndrome: case report and review of the literature.

A pregnancy complicated by vaginal stenosis six years after diagnosis of Stevens-Johnson syndrome is described. The pathologic changes in the vagina have not previously been reported. The basic pathology of severe mucosal erythema multiforme was present, as well as ectasia of the superficial capillaries and small venules. The effect of the vaginal scars on the mode of delivery is discussed.

Pruritic rash associated with cat scratch disease.

Cat scratch disease is a benign, self-limited illness characterized by regional lymphadenopathy that usually occurs in association with a history of contact with a cat. Cases of cat scratch disease with skin manifestations that included erythema nodosum; erythema multiforme; erythema marginatum; and non-specific maculopapular, petechial, and morbilliform rashes have been reported. No case of pruritic rash associated with cat scratch disease has been previously reported. In fact, one authority specifically states that the rash of cat scratch disease is nonpruritic. We report a well-documented c…

Urticaria multiforme in Asian children.

AIM: Urticaria multiforme is an uncommon presentation of acute urticaria. It most commonly affects children and most often occurs secondary … or younger. Viral infections were the commonest triggers. The most common referring diagnoses were erythema multiforme and Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Common antecedent or concomitant symptoms were fever and upper respiratory symptoms. Blood investigations were generally unremarkable except for mildly increased white cell counts and other markers of infection. Outcome …

Stevens-Johnson syndrome associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection.

The Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a relatively uncommon, severe form of erythema multiforme. A case is presented in which Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection was established as the causative agent. Clinicians need to be aware of this uncommon association. We emphasize the need to consider M. pneumoniae infection as one of the many agents responsible for the Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Scabies: histological study of inflammatory lesions.

Histological findings of the inflammatory lesions of scabies are distinctive enough to guide the pathologist in the direction of this diagnosis. It is characterized by a combination of an acute, vesicular, eczematous type of epidermal change and an erythema multiforme type of dermal reaction. When this combination is present, a search should be made to expose the organism in tissue sections or in scrapings of the cutaneous lesions.

Successful intravenous human immunoglobulin treatment of drug-induced Stevens-Johnson syndrome in a dog.

A two-year-old, male English springer spaniel developed severe mucocutaneous ulceration following treatment with trimethoprim-potentiated sulphadiazine. The clinical signs were consistent with Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS): there were no target or arciform lesions typical of erythema multiforme minor and major; more than one mucosal surface was affected; epidermal detachment affected less than 10 per cent of the body surface area; and there was a clear history of drug exposure. Systemic signs included a severe hepatopathy, dyspnoea, pyrexia and cachexia. Glucocorticoid therapy was associated …

Acute generalized exanthematic pustulosis. An atypical case due to nadoxolol?

A 74-year-old woman developed a generalized pustular dermatosis with erythema-multiforme-like and vesiculobullous lesions 10 days after beginning a treatment by nadoxolol. Despite the clinical polymorphism of the eruption, histology constantly revealed the presence of subcorneal pustules, even within the epidermis overlying subepidermal bullae. The eruption spontaneously healed after discontinuation of nadoxolol.

Toxic epidermal necrolysis in children--an update.

Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a relatively rare disease, characterized by generalized erythema, bulla formation, and exfoliation of the epidermis that resembles scalding. It is usually drug-induced and mediated by immune reactions of several types. TEN has to be differentiated from erythema multiforme and Stevens-Johnson syndrome. TEN bears a life-threatening potential and a risk for significant complications such as dehydration; secondary infections; pulmonary, gastrointestinal, and renal involvement; and late scarring with cosmetic and functional implications. Therapeutic interventions…

[Acute enteritis with "new" pathogens. Yersinia infections (author's transl)].

Infections of the intestinal tract with Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis are known the world over. Post-infection reactions like arthritis, erythema nodosum, erythema multiforme, scarlatiniform exanthemata and septicemic types deserve particular clinical attention. The clinical importance of enteric yersinioses has been shown in studies with the identification of significant antibody titers against Yersinia enterocolitis and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis in 6.71 and 4.58% respectively of 4411 patients examined for the first time. It was possible to isolate Yersinia enteroc…

Miscellaneous diseases affected by pregnancy.

Miscellaneous groups of dermatoses are associated with pregnancy and affected by gestation, but they do not coincide with any known classifications. They are inflammatory in nature and include psoriasis, acne, hidradenitis suppurativa, atopic dermatitis, and erythema multiforme. Such dermatoses can either improve or worsen during pregnancy. This review focuses on the changes that can occur during the pregnant state.

Histopathological Study of a Broad Spectrum of Skin Dermatoses in Patients Affected or Highly Suspected of Infection by COVID-19 in the Northern Part of Italy: Analysis of the Many Faces of the Viral-Induced Skin Diseases in Previous and New Reported Cases.

Skin manifestations of COVID-19 infections are diverse and are new to the dermatology community. We had the opportunity to examine the clinical and histopathological features of several patients who were divided into 3 groups. The first group included 8 COVID-19-positive patients who were hospitalized and quarantined at home. The second group included children and young adults who presented with chilblain erythema, erythema multiforme, and urticaria-like lesions. This group of patients was negative for the COVID-19 gene sequences by polymerase chain reaction but had a high risk of COVID-19 inf…

Stevens-Johnson syndrome progressing to toxic epidermal necrolysis with haloperidol and carbamazepine combination.

Carbamazepine and other anticonvulsants are commoner cause of severe adverse cutaneous drug reactions such as erythema multiforme, toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS). We report a case of SJS rapidly progressing to TEN with a combination of haloperidol and carbamazepine in a patient with bipolar affective disorder. The pathophysiological mechanism underlying this reaction is discussed.
